Chapter Five

“I’m coming!” Lorelai screamed as if the ringing phone could hear her. Today was the reception for the new tour and Lorelai had just left work and was trying to get ready. Justin was going to be over in 10 minutes to pick her up.

“Hello?” she asked out of breath.

“Lorelai, it’s Wade.” He said.

“What’s up?” she asked. “I just saw you like 2 minutes ago.”

“Problem.” He said gravely.

“Problem with what?” Lorelai asked as she tried to put her shoes on.

“You know how we needed all those props for ‘It’s Gonna Be Me?’” he said.

“Yes.” She replied. Suddenly the doorbell rang.

“Hey Wade, Justin’s here. Can we talk about this at the reception?” she asked as she walked to the front door.

Wade sighed. “I wish it was that simple. Apparently Johnny cut the budget this morning. We can’t afford everything we asked for. I did some networking and there’s a guy willing to help us out, but he needs to meet with us tonight and look over the plans.”

“What?!” Lorelai said as she opened the door to let Justin in. “Tonight?” Justin looked at her confused.

“Tonight.” He told her. “Look I know how much you were looking forward to going to the reception tonight, I can do this on my own. You go have fun.”

“No way. I’m coming with you. This is my job too.” Lorelai said.

“Are you sure?” he asked.

“Come get me in 10 minutes.” She said.

“Okay. See you in a few.” He told her hanging up.

“What’s going on?” Justin asked.

Lorelai ran her hand over her face. “Tour director problems. I can’t go to the reception tonight.”

“WHAT?” Justin exclaimed. “You’re kidding me.”

“I wish I was.” She told him.

“But Lorelai…I really want you there tonight.” He said.

“And I really want to be there, but some things can’t be helped.” She said.

“No way, come on, can’t Wade do this by himself?” he asked.

“Well, he did offer, but this is just as much my job as it is his.” She told him.

“I can’t believe this.” Justin said.

“I know…I’m sorry, but what am I supposed to do?” she pleaded.

“I can’t believe you’re blowing me off.” He said.

“Blowing you off? This is my job Justin.” She said. “I can’t just be like sorry Wade my boyfriend needs me to hold his hand all night so I can’t do my work!” Now Justin was angry. “Sorry, I didn’t know being with me was such an inconvenience. I can’t believe how unsupportive you’re being!”

“I’m the one who’s being unsupportive? That’s rich.” Lorelai said sharply. “Who was there when you went through the whole lawsuit? Me. Who was there when the tabloids spread all those rumors about you and Britney? Me. Who was there when…”

The doorbell rang interrupting Lorelai’s rant. Wade was standing at the door looking very uncomfortable.

“Hey Wade, come on in.” she told him.

Wade walked in the house. “Lorelai, seriously I can do this on my own.”

Lorelai shook her head. “We’re a team.”

Justin stormed past the two of them.

“Justin! Justin, would you hold up a second?” Lorelai pleaded, he just kept walking.

She followed him outside, but he got in his car and drove away. Lorelai was frustrated beyond all belief as she walked back into the house.

“Justin, why do you do this?” he asked himself. He loved Lorelai more than anything and seeing her upset, and knowing he was the cause of it, made his heart ache, but sometimes he just didn’t know when to stop. Justin knew he was wrong, he just didn’t want to admit it.
