Chapter 9

One week later…

“Makayla just answer the phone.” Chloe pleaded.

“No. I don’t want to talk to him.” Makayla said.

“If you ask me I think you’re blowing this out of proportion.” Chloe said.

“That’s why I didn’t ask you.” Makayla said smiling sweetly.

Chloe rolled her eyes. “Whatever.”

The doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it.” Chloe said running to the door.

Makayla picked up the remote and began flipping channels.

“Hey Makayla.” Dan said as he and Chloe walked into the room.

“Hi Dan.” Makayla said back. “What’s up?”

“Nothing. We actually have a day off.” Dan said.

“Oh, that’s nice. You guys work very hard.” Makayla said.

“So what are you doing today?” Chloe asked.

Makayla shrugged. “I have to work later.”

“Exciting.” Dan said.

“Indeed.” She replied.

“Well, we’d better get going. The movie starts soon.” Chloe said.

“Yeah, let’s roll.” He said.

The phone rang and Makayla made no attempt to answer it.

“Why aren’t you going to answer it?” Dan asked sounding puzzled.

“Because it’s Ashley.” Makayla said.

“Oh.” Dan replied. “You’re still mad?”

Makayla nodded.

“He’s miserable you know.” Dan said.

“Good.” Makayla said.

“Come on Dan there’s no reasoning with her. Bye Makayla.” Chloe said.

“Bye kids.” She replied as they headed out the door.

Makayla sighed and switched off the television. She hated to admit it but she was miserable too. Even though she hadn’t known Ashley very long she really missed him. She had spent so much time with him lately it was strange not having him around. The phone rang again. She couldn’t take it anymore.

“Hello?” she asked.

“Makayla. You answered.” Ashley said.

“Well, you have been calling for the past two hours non-stop. I got sick of hearing the phone ring.” She said.

Ashley didn’t say anything.

“Are you going to say something?” she asked.

“Can we talk?” he asked.

“We’re talking right now.” She said.

“Seriously.” He said.

Makayla sighed. “Fine.”

“Really?” he asked.

“Yes.” She said.

“I’ll be over in ten minutes.” He said.

“Okay.” Makayla said hanging up the phone.

She sank into the couch.

“What am I doing?”
