Tuxedo Mask is, at first, a confusing character; the Sailor Soldiers aren't sure whether he's their friend or their foe. On the one hand, he always leaps in to save them from danger; on the other, he isn't working with them to find the Illusionary Silver Crystal, and has told them he will keep it for himself.
In reality, Mamoru Chiba is a confused student plagued with dreams of a beautiful but shadowed young woman begging him to find the afformentioned Crystal. And so he dons the disguise of Tuxedo Mask to fulfil this mission. As time progresses we realise the figure in his dreams is Princess Serenity, or Sailor Moon, and he does regain his memories when the Crystal is found. He joins with the Sailor Soldiers + forms a relationship with Sailor Moon.
In later Series he fights alongside the Sailor Soldiers with no confusion as to whom he is allied.
He is generally a calm and collected person who isn't prone to outbursts of emotion like other characters might be, but he can be very romantic in his own way. He is dedicated + intelligent and a devoted husband & father.

In the past, Mamoru was Prince Endymion, the Prince of Earth + forbidden lover of Princess Serenity. Then he died. D:! Fortunately he was reborn in the future on Earth, where he started to get crazy dreams where some broad asked him to find her a diamond. A thousand years later and he's King Endymion, ruler of Earth with his Queen, NeoQueen Serenity and his daughter, NeoPrincess Serenity. And yet he still feels the need to study to become a Doctor.

Mamoru remains faithful to Usagi throughout the entire Series, although he is subject to a few (dangerous) crushes from Villains. In fact, that seems to be a major plot point in most of the Series, or at least something the villains do to piss of Usagi. In the Classic Series, Beryl's motivation for turning evil was her love for Endymion and her jealousy of the Prince + Princess' love. She brainwashes him into being her love-slave, but that didn't last very long. En/Natsumi Ginga from the R Season Fillers was in love with him + attempted to seduce him, but he wasn't interested. Nehellenia at the beginning of Stars brainwashed him too, but more as a method of aggrivating Sailor Moon than through any actual lust. Galaxia pulled that stunt, too. But through all these rough patches, he still stayed true to his girl.

Speaking of which, Mamoru tries very hard in his relationship with Usagi, largely because he's prone to saying things that hurt her feelings. He proposes to her in 2/3 of the continuities and in the other, promises that he will when he gets back. Even through all his inconvenient forgetfulness + dying all over the place he comes back to be with her in the end. In the R Season, he pretends to break up with her because he gets dreams telling her that their love will hurt her; in the end, though, he just can't stay away. Which is good, since it turns out the dreams were from his future self, King Endymion, dicking him around because there's nothing better to do when your entire civilisation is dead and your wife's in the deep-freeze. Or to prove that they loved each other enough to survive the hardships they'd face. Either way, really.

Poor Mamoru is an orphan. His parents died in a car crash when he was little, which he miraculously survived, although it left him with severe amnesia of everything before that time, including who he was. He starts to feel more at ease when he regains his memories of his past life thanks to Princess Serenity.

Settin' you Straight

  • There is no, and cannot be, any Sailor Earth. Mamoru is the representive of Earth, and he has the planet's Star Seed. So don't go making up Fan Soldiers called 'Sailor Earth'.
  • Mamoru does not have a sister who is Sailor Earth.
  • Mamoru is not in love with Rei, and never really was.
  • He's not in love with his daughter.
  • He's not in love with any men.
  • He's not staying together with Usagi through any form of duty. He's staying with her out of love.

Differences

  • Mamoru is probably the character with the most differences between all his incarnations, so this is going to be a long list.
  • In the Manga, Mamoru is a highschool student, in year 11 at Moto Azabu Private Highschool. For some reason the Anime wanted the age gap between him + his girlfriend to be even bigger, so they popped him into a nameless College. This makes all kinds of no sense when he goes off to Harvard later in the Anime for what seems like no reason other than "Hey, cool, Harvard".
  • In the Anime, Tuxedo Mask's primary attack is throwing razor-sharp roses, which sink into enemies + the ground like a dart. He never throws a single rose in the Manga, although he is often seen with one.
  • During the R Season Fillers, Mamoru totally forgot his relationship with Usagi. But a part of him still felt the urge to protect them from harm, and detached itself from him, becoming the handsome + chivalrous Tsukikage no Knight (Moonlight Knight), who dressed like he was some kind of Arabian prince. This meant that Mamoru + the Moonlight Knight could be together in the same place. This never happened in the Manga.
  • The afformentioned R Season break-up never happened in the Manga, either.
  • In the Manga, Mamoru proposes to Usagi the morning after (nudge). In the Live Action, he puts the ring into her hand and and then pisses off. What personality Mamoru had in the Manga seems to be stretched thinner and thinner as it gets recycled. Here's a diagram; Manga: Sweet and romantic but responsible. Anime: He's a total stiff when he remembers who he is. Live Action: Plain vanilla frozen pop.
  • He's got his left ear pierced in the Manga. It's not that much of a difference, but I like piercings.

Mythology

Prince Endymion is named after Endymion, a hunter/shepert/King from Asia Minor. His background consists mainly of his love for Selene, the moon goddess, and not much else.

He was the first person, according to mythology, to study the movement of the moon; this is what accounted for his love for her.

He was blessed by Zeus with eternal sleep, so that he may never die and forever stay by Selene's side.

There is mild confusion as to how many Endymions there are, but the prevalent theory is just 1.

Technical

Tuxedo Mask's Voice Actor is Tohru Furuya. He's a fairly succesful Voice Actor and has also played the roles of Yamcha from Dragon Ball Z, Daddy the Father from One Piece and Mario in the Super Mario Brothers OVAs.

For the North American dub, his Voice Actors are Rino Romano, Toby Proctor and Vince Corazza. Rino was also Batman in The Batman and Spider-Man in Spider-Man Unlimited & the Spider-Man Playstation 1 games. Toby was Alex "Flash" Gordon in Flash Gordon, and Copycat Ken in the Ranma 1/2 Dub. Vince also voiced Ali in the Dub, so I guess he did get Sailor Moon, in a way. He's also appeared as an actor in Without A Trace and Stargate SG-1.

In the Sailor Moon Musicals - Sera Myu - he's played by 8 different actors. From the left:

First Stage: Mizuki Sano
Yuuta Mochizuki
Second Stage: Yuuta Enomoto
Hironari Amano
Third Stage: Hidemasa Edo
Fourth Stage: Kenji Urai
Yuu "You" Shirota
Gyo Miyamoto

Naoko praised Sano's depiction of Tuxedo Mask as a "Cute, sweet boy", which I agree with. Yuuta also went on to play King Endymion during the Second Stage Musicals. Hironari has appeared in Kamen Rider Blade, and also sung the opening theme 'Rebirth'. Yuu is the most accomplished of the actors, starring in the Japanese movie 'Heat Island' (along with PGSM Actress Keiko Kitagawa), and is now reaping in fans with his portrayal of Tezuka Kunimitsu in the Prince of Tennis Live Action Movie + Musicals.

In the Live Action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon he is played by Jyoji "Shibby" Shibue (image on the right). He's gone on to play Kamen Rider Ibuki in Kamen Rider Hibiki, and also does a lot of commercials (such as the Final Fantasy Potion soft drink commercial).

Mamoru Chiba's Image Songs are 'Toki wo Koete...' ('Crossing Over Time...') and 'Dakishimete Itai' ('I Want To Hold You'). He also shared the love ballad 'You Are Just My Love' as Prince Endymion with Princess Serenity.
