750 000 $ From the Air!

This story happened several years ago, when the computer market in Russia was booming. Large scale computer deliveries from the West have just started and the Russian importers were not jet able to cover the growing demand. The companies which were able to sign direct contracts with the Western computer exporters were earning unbelievably high profits and the Russian Computer Klondike was attracting more and more newcomers. The trading company «Silicon Dream» was one of them.
The company was active, financially stable and able to invest big money into a new interesting project. Soon after the decision to put money in computer business was made, the «Silicon Dream» has got a request from a buyer in Siberia to deliver a big amount of computers to Novosibirsk. The Siberian company «Compuserv Ltd.» was ready to pay a very high price but insisted on an urgent delivery. Soon after that the «Silicon Dream» received a proposal from a German importer «Otto Berg GMBH» to buy several thousands computers for an extremely low price.
Both proposals seemed more than promising and in a short time two contracts - one with «Otto Berg GMBH» and another with «Compuserv Ltd.» have been signed. According to the contract «Otto Berg GMBH» has promised to deliver several thousands of computers to the «Silicon Dream» in 30 days. If they don’t fulfill the contract conditions they were obliged to pay penalties equal to 50% of the total contract value. The contract with the Siberian company «Compuserv Ltd.» was signed on the similar conditions, but this time the 50% penalties must have been paid by the «Silicon Dream» if they don’t deliver computers to Siberia in time. Both contracts were 100% legal, but the owners of the «Silicon Dream» did not new only one «little» thing: both the German company «Otto Berg GMBH» and Siberian «Compuserv Ltd.» were established and controlled by one and the same group of people well known in St.Petersburg as «Maltsev’s organized criminal group».
What happened next is easy to guess. One month has passed, «Otto Berg GMBH» officially apologized and paid all the penalties to the «Silicon Dream». Then representatives of «Compuserv Ltd.» appeared in St.Petersburg and used all possible methods to get money from the «Silicon dream».
Finally all the penalties have been paid to them. The difference between what the «Silicon Dream» has got from «Otto Berg GMBH» and what they were obliged to pay to «Compuserv Ltd.» has amounted to 750 000 $.
Thus the «Maltsev’s criminal group» has got nearly 1 million dollars «from the air».
