Extracurricular Activities

Fundraisers

Fundraising is designed to raise money for the organization. Each member is required to participate in at least one fundraiser per semester and receives points toward membership status for their parcipation. Last semester SHRM raised over $600 selling Candy & 650 selling Racine Kringles. SHRM donated $650 to Dr. Scharinger's Scholarship fund and the rest of the money went in to funding the State Conference and Student State Conference.

Community Service

Community Service was designed for SHRM members to take part in activities that will contribute to the benefit of our surrounding community. Some examples of community service activities include: food drives, Toys for Tots, visiting nursing homes, donating money to charities, and holiday activities. This semester's community service activity was contributing to SAM's Fun Run.

Socials

Socials are a way of encouraging members to get to know each other on a more personal level. Social activities planned for this semester were bowling, Pizza Hut (FREE FOOD!!), intramurals, broom ball, and an end of the semester party (AT Dr. WAGNER'S HOUSE!!).

Professional Dinner Meetings

These meetings give student members a chance to network with professionals and become more familiar with the HR field through guest speakers and informal conversations. UW-Whitewater SHRM is affiliated with three professional chapters in Southern Wisconsin. These include: HRMA-Milwaukee, Madison Area SHRM, and BHRA-Janesville/Beloit.

Merit Award

The Merit Award is a prestigous award developed to promote and develop more effective student involvement in SHRM. UW-Whitewater has been proud to receive this award for the last fourteen years. The most number of consecutive years any chapter has achieved the Superior Merit Award is fifteen. With a lot of member involvement and dedication, Whitewater will match the national record next year and beat it in the year 2000! The Superior Merit Award is achieved through outstanding activities, projects, and member participation.

Certification for HR (PHR)

"Certification is the mark of a true professional"

Achieving professional certification in human resources demonstrates a mastery of the HR body of knowledge and a dedication to staying aware of new developments in the field.
SHRM student members can begin the certification process by sitting for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) exam within one year before or after their college graduation date. Students who take the PHR within this time frame receive a reduced rate.
The PHR can be taken on the first Saturday of December or May.
Please contact Dr. Dale Scharinger (SHRM advisor) for more information and application.
