Determiners


Determiners are a marker of nouns. They include articles, possessive nouns and pronouns; demonstrative pronouns; quantifiers; indefinite pronouns; and numbers.

Main Groups of Determiners

Articles

a/an, the

Note: the is a definite article
a/an is an indefinite article

Demonstratives

this, these, that, those

Possessives

my, our, your, his, her, its, their

Indefinites

some, any, no, every, other, another, many, more, most, enough, few, less, much, either, neither, several, all, both, each

Cardinal Numbers

one, two, three, four......

Ordinal Numbers

first, second, third, .....last

Rules:
  1. Determiners don not occur with any of the adjective-forming derivational suffixes, like –able or –ly.
  2. Determiners do not have comparative or superlative forms: tall, taller, tallest
  3. Determiners will not fit in both slots of the adjective test frame sentence. The ______ man seems very ______.
  4. Determiners always precede any adjective or noun modifiers of a noun, as does the in the expensive car stereo.
