Meanings


Affix A morpheme added to the beginning (prefix) or ending (suffix) of a word.
antecedent The noun or noun phrase that a pronoun refers to or stands for.
auxiliary adjective An adjective that precedes and modifies a noun (i.e., the small boy).
auxiliary verb A structure-class word used with verbs (modals, have, be, do, etc)
gerund A verb having the [-ing] inflection and functioning as a nominal phrase (He dislikes biking.)
inflection A change in form that signals the grammatical function of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns (i.e., noun plurals).
prefix An affix attached to the beginning of a word.
suffix An affix attached to the ending of a word.
