NEWSLETTEREXPLORATION BEYOND ERIEQUEST Lake Huron Adventures On February 12th of this year, on board the Josh II, we departed from Sarnia, Ontario to dive a couple of ship wrecks in an area of Lake Huron known as a shipwreck graveyard. The two wrecks that we visited were the Sachem and the Yakima. Both have an interesting history. Both vessels had suffered from fire before being towed to their final location to be scuttled. On this particular day the sun was shinning, there was hardly a cloud in the sky and the visibility above the water seemed to be endless. The diving was terrific. The visibility was about 15 feet. Water temperature was a freezing 31 degrees. Many of the divers gained valuable experience with free flowing regulators. The boat ride was great (even 12 miles out we could still see the Blue Water Bridge) and with a blast furnace going at full tilt the ride out and back was nice and warm. The cracking of the ice as we were trying to get in and out of the harbor was a novel experience but one thing that couldn’t be beat (and all dive trips have it) was the camaraderie shared between everyone on the boat. It’s an experience that won’t be easily forgotten.
