"Let's get something to eat then." he told her. "I'm hungry anyway."
"Kay, angelface. But let's bring it back to my place, I don't really wanna be out in my current condition." she grinned.
"Sure Day.." he started the car and went through a fast food drive up, ordered their food and paid for it, Dayna grinning as he dealt very sweetly with the quivering teenaged girl who waited on them. She took the bags from him, and giggled as he pulled away. "Very sweet angel. She looked like she was gonna faint." she said. He blushed furiously and avoided her gaze.
"I'm sorry, angelface. I figured you were used to it.." she laid her hand on his knee and his head whipped around to look at her. He looked at her hand on his knee and she realized she was still touching him. She reluctantly pulled her hand away. "Guess it could be unsettling.." she said softly.
"It can be." he finally answered. "But I'm only me.." he said.
"I know, angel. I like YOU." she smiled. He smiled back and then laughed.
"Umm..Day..even though you wash my laundry and know every single thing there is to know about where I live," he began, "I have NO IDEA where you live."
"Oh my goodness! I'm sorry ..." she apologized, then told him how to get to her apartment. He smiled when he realized he was right, there was the park she had taken him to that morning she found him outside the gate. She lived about two blocks over in an old house that had been converted into apartments. She lived on the lower floor, but you still had to climb a couple of steps to get into the front door. The place was dark, and the door was locked. "Miracle of miracles." Day grumbled. "The one freaking night she remembers to lock the stinkin' door.."
Taylor handed her the bags of food and opened the door for her. She switched on the light and set the bags on the kitchen counter. The place was not very big, but it was clean and Taylor knew that it was Dayna that kept it that way. There was a soft looking, over stuffed couch in the living room. placed in front of an average sized television, and a big, overstuffed recliner next to the couch. The wall to the side was lined with bookshelves, which was completely full. There was no dining room, just a counter with a couple of barstools along a galley style kitchen. She pointed out the bathroom, which was between the two bedrooms, on her way to check the room that had been recently vacated. She opened the door and threw on the light, relieved to find that the room had been completely emptied. All she would have to do is wash the walls and rent a carpet machine to clean the rug. "Good riddance." she said and closed the door. "'Scuse me angel, I need
to change my clothes. I smell like an ashtray..YUK!" she made a face and he laughed. "Kay, Mind if I make coffee?" he asked.
"Not a bit.." she smiled. "I think I need some."
Taylor rummaged through her kitchen, put on a pot of coffe, found some paper plates and set out their dinner.
Taylor turned when Day re-entered the room. She was barefooted, wearing her faded, torn at the knee, levi's and a chocolate brown, tight, baby tee. She had let her dark, curly hair down, and it fell around her face and past her shoulders. She was on her way to the counter to sit next to him when she tripped over the shoes she had kicked off when they had come in. "Whoa!" she grinned up at him as he caught her, "That'll teach me to drink more than two beers on an empty stomach." He looked down at her, still smiling with his arms around her waist. She held her breath and steadied herself, gently removing herself from his embrace. "That's my prince charming..always there to rescue me." she said lightly and plopped on the stool she was headed for, gesturing for him to sit on the one next to her. "You okay?" he asked, his smile fading slightly.
She nodded. "Just need to eat, Taylor. You too, it's getting cold." she motioned toward his plate. He looked stunned for a moment, the grinned. "Wha'd I do?" he asked.
"Whaddaya mean?" she looked up at him, and took a bit off the end of a french fry.
"You called me by my name, I thought maybe I did something wrong.." he teased.
"Oh good grief! Don't mess with my head angelface, it's already spinning." she giggled taking a bite of her sandwich. They talked and ate then pitched what was left in the garbage. Dayna started to get them a cup of coffee, but was still a little woosy. "Day? You're gonna burn yourself.." Taylor said and quickly took the coffee cups from her. He poured, then asked, "Where do you want me to set these?"
"On the coffee table silly.." she giggled and he shot her an 'oh-my-god-that-was-bad' look, making her giggle again. "Give a poor drunk coed a break will ya?"
"Kay." he laughed and set the coffee down. She went to sit down on the couch and stumbled again, once again he caught her. "Damn, Day.." he teased, keeping his arm around her. "How many DID you have?"
"Apparently, way too many." she said and grabbed onto his forearm to steady herself, but now she wasn't sure if it was being in his arms, or the beer that was making her so dizzy. "Maybe I better sit, just to be safe." she told him, giving him a shaky smile. He helped her sit down and then sat next to her, handing her the coffee he had poured for her. "So.." he started cautiously, not wanting to upset her, "Is that why you've been killing yourself working Day? Deadbeat roommate, I mean.."
She sighed and set her coffee cup back on the table. "Yeah..."
"Okay. What AREN'T you telling me?" he asked. She looked wide-eyed at him. How did he know?
"Nothing for you to worry about angelface. I'll get it figured out.." she said.
"You gonna try to find another roomate?" he asked.
"No." she made a disgusted face. "I don't wanna go through this hell again."
"How are you gonna manage, Day? You can't quit school now.."
"I know angel. I'll probably have to work a full time job.." she said and sighed again. Taylor's head swam and he almost spilled his coffee. He set it down shakily and sat back, trying to regain his composure. A full time job..she wouldn't be able to help his mother out anymore if she did that, which meant there'd be no excuse for him to see her. NO. No. He looked down at her, but she was looking at her hands.
