A group of 15 local men formed an organization called the Santa Claus Club in Valatie (Vuh-LAY-shuh) in 1946 to provide gifts to poor children in the area at Christmas.There are many such clubs now around the country. Virginia O'Hanlon Douglas, whose 1897 letter to the New York Sun inspired the famous "Yes, Virginia" editorial, spent her retirement in Valatie and died here in 1971. |
