Guide to Writing 5 Paragraphs
** GIVE ME FIVE! Allright, now. I know it's corny, but you'll always have your hand "handy" to help you remember to write five quality,
related paragraphs.
1 - THUMBS UP! means you'll start with an introductory paragraph that grabs your reader's attention and entices them to read on. In the
introductory paragraph you'll give the reader an idea of what your topic will be. In order for it to be considered a "quality" paragraph, it will
have a topic sentence, supported by several other sentences. The introductory paragraph is also known as "the beginning" of your
essay.
Your Introduction should do some or all of the following:
1) capture the interest of the reader (anecdote, question, quotation, fact)
2) hint at the overall meaning and theme
3) include the thesis
4) give necessary background
5) provide a smooth transition into the body of the essay
2, 3, 4 - MAKE YOUR POINTS! means that your next three paragraphs will make your points about your topic. They suport your
introductory paragraph. They are also known as "the middle" of your essay.
Body:
You need several paragraphs to develop the various Ideas essential to your essay. Each paragraph should focus on one main idea that
needs to be supported in some way. Consider the possibilities for support:
1)      comparisons and contrasts
2)      incidents and anecdotes
3)      reasons and explanations
4)      definitions and details
5)      facts and examples
6)      specific narrative and descriptive details
7)      thoughts and feelings
Each paragraph must be arranged in an interesting, yet logical way. Consider the possibilities for organization:
1)      chronological order
2)      order of importance
3)      spatial order (from place to place, near to far, left to right)
4)      comparison and contrast
