related paragraphs. |

1 - THUMBS UP! means you'll start with an introductory paragraph that grabs your reader's attention and entices them to read on. In the |
|
introductory paragraph you'll give the reader an idea of what your topic will be. In order for it to be considered a "quality" paragraph, it will |
|
have a topic sentence, supported by several other sentences. The introductory paragraph is also known as "the beginning" of your |
|
essay. |

Your Introduction should do some or all of the following: |
|
1) capture the interest of the reader (anecdote, question, quotation, fact) |
|
2) hint at the overall meaning and theme |
|
3) include the thesis |
|
4) give necessary background |
|
5) provide a smooth transition into the body of the essay |
|
2, 3, 4 - MAKE YOUR POINTS! means that your next three paragraphs will make your points about your topic. They suport your |
|
introductory paragraph. They are also known as "the middle" of your essay. |
