What is the writing process? |
The writing process is comprised of five stages that writers work though when creating a written piece. The |
stages are: |
Pre-writing |
First Draft |
Revision |
Editing |
Publishing |
The movement is not necessarily linear but in a manner that facilitates the development of an effective piece |
of writing. Therefore, the writer moves back and forth through the various stages. |
Why use the writing process? |
In today's society the level of literacy required to function everyday and in the work place is steadily |
increasing. In order to address the needs of our changing society, teachers must look for methods and |
strategies that prepare students for the challenges of today's world. |
Implementing the writing process into the classroom is an effective strategy that teaches students a necessary |
form of communication. We know that writing is a powerful tool that can influence others and clarify one's |
own thoughts. Teaching the writing process can give students the key to unlocking this powerful tool. |

sentence is usually the first sentence of the |
paragraph. It gives the reader an idea of what the |
paragraph is going to be about. The supporting |
sentences need to be about the idea presented in |
the topic sentence. In a paragraph, every sentence |
should "belong". |
