HOW TO SEND A SCREENSHOT

LAST UPDATED: by ADMIN ; FEB 18, 2005 @ 06:43 PM

It seems as though not everyone knows how to take and send a WC2 screenshot...so I've decided to make a page just to show you how it should be done.  :)

My point is that taking a screenshot is easy and fast--there shouldn't be any real reason why people would refuse to take/send screenshots for these tournaments.

THIS GUIDE HAS BEEN WRITTEN IN PLAIN ENGLISH AND INCLUDES PICTURE CLIPS--THERE'S NO WAY ANYONE CAN NOT GET IT!!  :D

Before I begin, I'd like to quickly review the standard screenshot rules.

In general, if you used WarVid to record your games--there's no real need to send a screenshot—JUST MAKE SURE YOU REALLY DID SET IT TO RECORD @ 1FPS!!  (And yes--that means if you're recording with W2Insight instead of WarVid, you must still those screenshots).

Up to THREE* SS's must be taken upon request and sent to both the “Accuser” and myself (admin@war2.org) within **5** minutes after the end of the game.  **It really shouldn’t take longer than 5 minutes!!  If email is such a big problem… let me know IMMEDIATELY, and I’ll get on AIM so you can send it that way instead…

Also, denied/late SS's will result in AUTO-DISQUALIFICATION. (The "Accuser" may want to take a SS themselves to prove they requested a SS from the "Accused" if there were no watchers to witness/prove the request in game). NO EXCEPTIONS!

It never hurts to take a screenshot in case proof is needed afterwards.

ALSO, JUST IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT WARVID OR W2INSIGHT IS YET...
NOTE: You may click the pictures to see them enlarged.

What is a screenshot (aka “SS”, screen-snapshot, etc.)?
A screenshot is a file that contains an image of your screen—basically; it copies that image from the frame-buffer into a file.  That means if you were hacking—it SHOWS you’re hacking, because it copied what you saw on the screen into a .PCX file saved in your W2 directory.

Below are some sample screenshots from a tournament:

How do I take a screenshot?

(Assuming you’re running a MAC, not WINDOWS)--
window users, read further below
I received a very helpful email with information on how to take screenshot for MAC users, I’m sharing it as I received it—hope it helps you too:

Hello, I ran across war2.org and thought you might want to post instructions for Mac users to take screen shots. Instead of the PRINTSCREEN button, Mac users can take a screenshot with this three key  combination: cmd-shift-3

On Mac OS X this will produce a screenshot in PDF format on the desktop. In earlier versions of Mac OS they are in PICT format which can be easily converted to jpeg/png/etc (or, I think the Paint program under windows can read PICT format).

I hope that helps somebody. And I hope I have time to participate in  one of your tournaments sometime!

Special thanks to Chris for submitting this useful tip!

(Assuming you’re running WINDOWS, not MAC)

When asked for a screenshot, you should press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard to take the screenshot in-game.  You only need to press the “Print Screen” button once, your screen should “flash”—that indicates a screenshot has been taken and saved in your W2 directory.

I’ve never used this button, where is it?

I can’t find my screenshots, where is this W2 directory?
Your W2 directory is wherever you installed the game.  By default, it should be here though ( C:\Program Files\Warcraft II BNE ).

What if I can’t find it in the W2 directory?
You can check where your screenshots will usually save to by doing this mini-test…
~~~~>Try SS-ing a channel.
Instead of the usual “flash” you get when do a SS in game; you will be prompt to save the file instead.  Once prompt, you should note the directory the screenshot save screen shows.  That is the directory where they have probably been saving the files to instead.
If that doesn’t work, you may also XP-“
search” / 98-“find” the file by going through the Start Menu.  The screenshot files taken in game will be saved under the names “screen000, screen001, screen002…”
What type of file is are screenshots?
By default, when taking W2 screenshots in Windows, it will save them under a .pcx format, the .pcx means they are still-screen graphics.
I will ONLY accept .pcx files for screenshots—plain English: I DO NOT WANT OR NEED YOU TO OPEN AND ‘SAVE’ THE FILE AS JPEGS, BMP, ETC.
Bottom Line:
If they’re not in .pcx format, I will not accept them.  There is no need to edit the format!  LEAVE THE FILE IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM.
Can a SS be edited?  How can you tell if they’ve been edited?
Yes, it is possible to edit a screenshot.  The more experienced ones can even edit and keep the screenshot in .pcx format afterwards.  However, there are still many ways to detect if a file has been modified.  I cannot state how though.  :)
How do people edit screenshots?
I will not go over the exact details, but technically, any decent paint program can edit one.  However, those methods are easily detectable.   Rest assured that when tournament screenshots are sent, I will check if the files have been modified.  Edited screenshots will obviously not be accepted.
~~~~~~~~>Okay—back to taking a screenshot.
So now you know that taking a screenshot only takes 1 second—all you gotta do is press the PRINT SCREEN button found your keyboard while you’re in game.  It doesn’t matter if you “paused” the game or not—you can still take the screenshot.  As a matter of fact, it is my preference that screenshots be taken when games are paused :)

After the game ends, you will report to the channel.  Once I know I need to receive a screenshot from you, you should EMAIL it to me at
admin@war2.org or even wc2bnet@yahoo.com.  It doesn’t really matter which of those email address you send it to, as long as you do it in a timely manner--seriously, it really takes less than 5 minutes!!

I will accept no further excuses!!  JUST IN CASE you’ve never sent an email with files attached… I will even show you guys how to email the screenshot as an email attachment.  -.-
NOTE: If you do not have an email account, go get one!  They're FREE and only takes 2 minutes to sign up for one.

What is an email attachment?
An email attachment is any computer file you link/attach to an email message, in our case; it should be the screenshot file you were asked to take.  So basically, when you send me an email, the file (the screenshot) arrives with the message.

It doesn’t really matter if you’re using yahoo, hotmail, msn, gmail, etc, etc.  The point is all email accounts will allow you to attach files and send them.  Here’s how:

So obviously, you open your web browser, go to your mail server, enter your username and password, etc.  For the exact steps for a particular email program, you’re gonna have to see their specific manual, help files, etc.  But in general, here is how you attach the SS to an email message:

NOTE: You may click the pictures to see them enlarged.
Once you’re logged in your email account, you can COMPOSE a NEW email.

ATTACH/INSERT the file(s) to the email.  *You have to know the NAME of the file you will be sending (screen000, screen001, etc.)

Therefore you have to BROWSE and find WHERE the file is.

( C:\Program Files\Warcraft II BNE )

Once found, SELECT the file, click OK and it will automatically save/upload it to the email.

Then COMPLETE the email message as usual
(subject, recipients, and text).
TO: admin@war2.org  OR wc2bnet@yahoo.com (DON'T LEAVE BLANK!!)
SUBJECT: SS (or blank)
TEXT MSG: SS (or blank)
~~~>Ensure the file really has been attached.
Now you can SEND the message with the screenshot files attached.
If this is all new to you, try to send a SS to yourself just to test it out :D
 IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM VIEWING SCREENSHOTS IN .PCX FORMAT, PLEASE LET ME KNOW--HOWEVER, TRY DOWNLOADING THESE TWO FILES FOR YOUR C:\WINDOWS\ INSTEAD FIRST.
KODAKIMG.EXE
KODAKPRV.EXE
THOSE FILES LET YOU TAKE/VIEW SS IN WIN98, THEY ALSO WORK FOR WINXP.
IF YOU NEED .DLL FILES, YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THEM ALL HERE AS WELL.
