The hardest panel to get off is the
door because of these screws. The Fino comes with
new hardware, so get these off any way you can. On the `84 I
used a 1/2" Forstner drill bit to get the plastic off. The `84 had
philips screws but the '85 needed a T-35 Torx bit.
I found it at lara.com. |

First I took off the door.

The Upper Garnish Molding does not pop out
as the manual says. There is a bolt to take out of the
rear Metal Garnish Clip.

After the door I took off the rear bumper.
Then the rear roof panel, the rear fenders, the hood and the
front fenders.

The front bumper is last to come off because of this
undocumented bracket that is easier to get off when the fenders are
already off. Take the air dam off for now, you can put it back on later.

Wheel wells can come off now to make it easier to put the Fino
panels on. The Fiero wheelhouse panels will be used with the Fino kit.
The kit does not come with hardware to reattach the panels, so try to be
careful so you can re-use them.
Also take out the headlight assemblies, since the Fino doesnt use pop-up
headlights.

And so here the body is, in my basement... parts taken off weigh 193 lbs
(not including metal z-bar bumpers which you can also remove for another
35 lbs or so)

Now is your chance to paint over some rust that was under the body panels.

You can get a copy of the video instructions before your body arrives.
You'll see that you have to cut the bumpers for the body to fit.
I used a Metal Cut-Off Blade for my circular saw.
Its real LOUD. Your neighbors will love it.
Here is two shots of the rear bumper. Look above for the "before" pic.
BUT ACTUALLY, THE BUMPER DOES NOT FIT AT ALL WITH THE FINO, SO JUST REMOVE
IT.

You also need to cut the front end with a reciprocating saw (sawz-all).
This picture shows the plastic honey-comb still attached, but it must be
removed for the Fino to fit on there.
When you cut the front corner off you can leave the two mounting holes
for the relay on the driver's side.
The Fino does not need that much cut off.
The Fino deck lid is much lighter than the Fiero's, so you must remove
the torque rods from the hinges. You need a torx T-40 "Tamper-resistant"
bit (#26070 from Lisle Corp). Be careful not to break the rear window!
Check out http://home.xnet.com/~nife/articles/tt-torquerod.html but the
manual also does a good job. I did it by myself.
