Multiple Intelligences and Learning Style Discussion Paper

Learning is an essential part of life, and we all have different ways of learning the same things.  There has been many research studies conducted to help figure out what kinds of learning styles there are, as well as the most effective ways to teach these styles.  We have been learning about different learning styles and taking tests to determine what kind of learners we are and how we need to adjust our teaching styles so that we will have the maximum impact on our students.

  1. The Multiple Intelligence tests are tests that help us determine different learning styles.  There are different learning styles that certain types of people adapt to better than others.  Active learners versus reflective learners are two very opposite ways that people learn.  I am a very active learner, I have to usually “go through the motions,” to understand concepts and ideas.  Reflective learners are categorized as “thinkers” because they usually give thought to what they are learning.  Another couple of learning styles include sensing and intuitive learners.  Sensing learners tend to want facts and the “raw” information, where as intuitive learners like to prefer learning by discovering through well tested ideals.  Visual and verbal learners are also types of learners that we need to associate in the classroom.  Visual learners have an easier time learning what they see, and verbal or auditory learners listen to retain information.  There are also the kinesthetic learners who learn by doing like the active learners.  The last couple of types of learners are the sequential and global learners.  Sequential learners learn best in step by step instruction, often learning by building on foundations.  Global learners tend to learn in large bunches, where they do not need to connect flowing ideas as much as the sequential learners.

  1. I took three tests to help determine what type of learner I was and the preference of learning styles that I would benefit best from using.  The first test that I took was the multiple intelligence inventory test, which gave me descriptive results.  The test revealed to me that I scored relatively high on all of the eight styles.  Linguistic was my weakest style with a score of 27, where as mathematics (42), body/kinesthetic (41), and intrapersonal (40) were my top three styles.  The next test that I took was learning styles scales.  It was different because it is a scale type test which gives a balanced type system.  The styles that I was strongest in were sensing and visual.  The VARK questionnaire results were visual 3, aural 3, read/write 3, and kinesthetic 7 which it stated that I was strongest in the kinesthetic learning style.

  1. Learning the strengths and weaknesses about how my mind works will greatly benefit me in my career as a professional educator.  I found out that I need to see things and touch them and work in a hands-on type environment.  The type of teacher you will become will hopefully be able to reach out to all learning types and be the most effective teacher that I can possibly become.  I will have audio power point slides that I will elaborate on by using hands-on examples in the class kind of like a lab and using examples that the students can relate to in there daily lives.
