The New Mutants rescue Moonstar from Viper and the Silver Samurai. Viper blew up her estate in an attempt to kill the New Mutants. Shan was lost, and Xavier let her be thought dead, but she is actually alive, evil, and powerful.

New Mutants 7-8

New Mutants rescue Sunspot's mother from Axe and Hellfire Club. Their boat sabotaged, the New Mutants are captured and taken to Nova Roma, a lost city in the Andes.

Cannonball and Sunspot are forced to combat one another in the Arena because they were drugged, but Dani shocked them out of it.

Kitty & the New Mutants are kidnapped by the White Queen. Frost offers Kitty membership in the Hellfire Club, but she refuses.

Magik teleports self and Mirage through Limbo to safety from Hellions. Frost puts Doug, Sam, Amara, and Dani under her mental control but is unable to do so to Illyana, who teleports away with Dani.

The Hellions are alerted and challenge the New Mutants to a duel in the Combat Room; they join the Hellions or go free based on its outcome. Frost and Shaw arrive and renege on the deal. The New Mutants attack, during which Shaw reveals that Roberto's father is a member of the Hellfire Club. Illyana transports them back to Westchester, where Dani is accosted by the Demon Bear that killed her parents.

Dani goes out at night and summons up the Demon Bear. She brings out its greatest fear, which is herself, and believes she has killed it, but when she turns her back, it fells her. The New Mutants find her, bloody, in the woods.

Through Dani's rapport with Dani she learns that the bear believes Dani can destroy it. In space, the Starjammers see Warlock chase Magus toward earth but are unable to intervene. The Bear attacks, but Roberto and Illyana beat it back, Illyana now manifesting portions of armor plating whenever she is attacked. The Bear teleports them all to its home turf, a world that looks like the pre-Columbian American Southwest.

Illyana splits the Bear down the middle, and its halves are transformed into Dani's parents. Back to Westchester, Dani's doctor announces that she is paralyzed. Xavier has Storm summon Healer to heal Dani, but her recuperation will still be long. He refers the outstanding mystical problems to Dr. Strange and congratulates the team on a job well-done.

Warlock speeds toward earth, accidentally bashing Magneto's asteroid base en route. Sam and Roberto retrieve him, not knowing he is sentient. The New mutants and Lockheed attack him until Doug arrives and explains life on earth to Warlock and learns that his kind duel their fathers to the death to prove themselves. Warlock joins the team.

New Mutants save Lila Cheney from an alien trying to kill her during Lila's concert. Lila teleports some of the team away, but when Warlock reactivates her stargate so the rest can follow, they wind up in empty space, so Warlock turns himself into a spacecraft.

Lila entertains Sam in her own private Dyson sphere and plans with Carasulla to steal and auction off the Earth, while Hovannes plans to double-cross her.

After a brief battle, Lila promises never to try to steal earth again and teleports them all to her flat in London.

Selene shows up in New York and plots with her follower von Roehm to take over the Hellfire Club. Aleytys "Lee" Forrester ferries a wounded Magneto (New Mutants 21) to his Bermuda Triangle base.

The same drug that created Cloak and Dagger was injected into Rahne and Roberto (Marvel Team-Up Annual 6). Cloak and Dagger are now powerless, while Rahne and Roberto have become like Cloak and Dagger. Illyana tries to exorcise them in Limbo, but the light and shadow both possess Illyana. She purges herself of them, returning them to Rahne and Roberto.

Xavier guides Rogue as she absorbs just the Dagger persona from Rahne. Rogue absorbs the Cloak persona from Roberto despite his uncooperativeness, and the two personas conflict within her and the mind-linked Xavier as Illyana exorcises them. Roberto and Rahne are restored to normal, Ty and Tandy are again Cloak and Dagger.

On Muir Island, Moira monitors Legion and is forced to turn to Xavier for help.

Legion's power spins out of control, so Moira summons Xavier. Frost berates Empath over the loss of Firestar (Uncanny X-Men 193, Firestar LS), and he tries to take control of her emotions. She retaliates, placing inhibitors in his mind.

Xavier and the New Mutants are transported to Legion's mind where Xavier learns that Legion is his son. Legion's core personality is being blocked by Jemail, a terrorist whose mind was absorbed when he killed David's godfather Daniel Shomron and almost killed David. In trying to defeat Jemail, Jack Wayne proves to be the one responsible for Legion's condition, and defeat him.

David recovers except for three dominant splinter personalities and is introduced to his father. Xavier is aware that the Beyonder is approaching earth (Secret Wars II), and back in New York, Empath plans to turn Roberto and Amara over to the Gladiators (Beauty and the Beast LS).

New Mutants 29

The New Mutants, with Guido (Strong Guy) and Dazzler head out to save Roberto and Amara. However, they are forced to become Gladiators to save non-mutant children's lives.

Xavier contacts Magneto, telling him to lead the X-Men against the Beyonder (Secret Wars II).

Rachel telepathically reaches out to the Beyonder, who merges with her mind momentarily, filling her with cosmic awareness, similar to the Phoenix force.

The New Mutants break free of transformed Karma's blood-sport arena. Rachel, Kitty, and Alison return to the X-Men, but the New Mutants go off on their own to catch Shan.

New Mutants search for Shan in Madripoor. She possesses all except Dani and Illyana, who teleport to Limbo. They return to learn that all the Gladiators have been killed by the New Mutants, under Shan's control.

Storm, Illyana, and Dani attack her, and she uses the New Mutants to fight for her. Illyana teleports Dani back to Shan, and she is immediately possessed. This puts Rahne back under Shan's control, and she and S'ym believe that Illyana has switched sides. Warlock attacks her until she convinces him that she has a plan to save the New Mutants.

Shan reveals that she is actually Farouk (Shadow King), Xavier's first foe. Illyana transports herself and Warlock back in time to witness their psychic duel (Uncanny X-Men 117). When Farouk's body died, his mind survived and has taken over Shan. Warlock pretends to be Illyana and battles Shan while Illyana teleports the mutants to Limbo, which frees them from mental control. They all attack Shan simultaneously, and Farouk's mind jumps from her to Doug. Illyana detects this, and Shan defeats Farouk on the astral plane.

In Asgard, Loki gets the Enchantress to bring Storm to him and torment the X-Men, since he is sworn not to harm them (X-Men and Alpha Flight). She abducts the New Mutants, who appear in various places. The Enchantress pulls out Illyana's demonic side and makes it her servant to hunt down the others. Loki commissions Eitri to make a hammer for Storm.

Shan break Illyana's mental link to the Enchantress. They pretend to be enslaved and then attack her. Shan and the Illyana-demon reach Illyana. Shan returns the demon to her. The Enchantress attacks, Shan then possesses The Enchantress long enough to force her to allow Illyana to teleport them all to Limbo. She gives the Enchantress to S'ym to play with. But Storm is still Loki's prisoner, and the New Mutants plan to free her (Uncanny X-Men Annual 9).
