Other Safety Stuff

Fire Extinguisher

This is a no-brainer. You have to have a Fire Extinguisher in your racecar. A 2lb general Fire Extinguisher costs about $10 to $12.

I hope that this is not your only Fire Extingiusher that you have in your pit. A 5lb Fire Extingishter costs about $20. I have two in the pits, one is a 5lb Chemical  and the other is the 5 Gallon Water Bottle Fire Extinguisher. You want to use the Chemical on most gasoline type fires.  Water will only spread a gasoline fire, if it has been spilled and maybe harder to put out.

By the way, the water bottle one comes in real handy, when your son gets out the super soaker. He doesn't stand chance :)

Remember, if you catch fire on your uniform:
STOP, DROP, and ROLL on the ground until the fire is out.
ENDURO RULES

4) Safety Equipment:
Cars must have a fire extinguisher.

Battery Box

The rules state that the battery may be place inside the car on the passenger floorboard. You can leave the battery in the stock postion. I placed my battery, in a Heavy Duty Battery box. in the backseat on the drivers side. I was planning to put in a seat for a passenger, but I never got one. If I was a passenger, I dont think I'd want a battery between my legs.

A battery box costs about $10, Secure it to the floor. I use one of those rubber type hold downs over the top of the battery box to keep the cover on.

ENDURO RULES

10)
Batteries may be placed inside the car on the passenger side floorbard, if properly fastened and covered for safety.

Marine or RV heavy duty plastic box are recommended.

NO BATTERIES IN THE TRUNK!

Window Bars

The rules require that you run vertical bars across the windshield opening. The must be a least 5/16 of inch in diameter. The are to be placed about 6" a part all the way across the windshield opening.

I would recommend a little more that just the bars in the windshield. I worry about flying parts from other Enduros. I put 3 - 3/8" veritical bar right in front of the driver and place the rest  (5/16")across the windsheild. It takes about 10 or 11 bars to fill the entire windshield. Next, I put 1/2" square screen over the bars. This serves two purposes: 1) Help keep things out and 2) Breaks up those big globs of mud, instead of hitting you in the face. At the top and the bottom of the windsheild, I ran a strip of sheet metal, about 6" wide all the way across the windshield. This also help keep flying debris out and mud from racing on the dirt.

Solid metal bars cost about $2.00 each at Home Depot. Rebar is cheaper, but I think it looks tacky. Dave Neff #42, also welded horzionital additonal bars across the top and bottom, and welder the vertical bars to them.  I think this is a good idea, it might keep that tire or axle out of your car.

ENDURO RULES

6)
5/16" minimum bars spaced 6" or less, vertically across windshield opening are required.

Firewalls

Close up all openings in the front firewall, between you and the engine. Do the same for the rear, where the fuel cell or gas tank is located in the trunk area.

ENDURO RULES

6)
All holes and opening in the fron and rear firewalls MUST be covered using steel or aluminnum. They may be screwed, bolted, welded, or riveted to the car.
8) Full front and rear firewalls must be in place
Drive Shaft Loops

Drive Shaft Loops are not required for Enduro Racing, but it might be a good idea. Plus, if you want to go run Econo Stocks at RMNS or I-76, you will have to have one. Also, to run Econo Stocks, your driveshaft will also have to be painted white. Drive Shaft Loops are about $20 or you can make one yourself.

Steering Wheel Pads

This is another one of those things to keep the driver safe. If you take a hard hit the belts may stretch enough that you may contact the steering wheel. A pad will help soften the blow. The are about $12.
