Biography
One of Canada's most dynamic conductors, Tyrone Paterson has held the position of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Opera Lyra Ottawa since 1998. OLO performs at the National Arts Centre of Canada with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in the pit. Under his guidance, Opera Lyra Ottawa has become a highly respected company. Maestro Paterson possesses extensive knowledge of the operatic repertory and has appeared with opera companies and orchestras throughout Canada, the United States, Asia and Europe. His first appearance with Opera Lyra Ottawa was in 1994 conducting Tosca and he has since led many of the company's greatest successes. He also currently serves as an Advisor to Opera Hong Kong and is the Music Advisor and Principal Conductor for Manitoba Opera. He previously served as Resident Conductor for Calgary Opera.
He recently returned from Europe where he conducted highly regarded concerts for the Orchestra Sinfonica di San Remo in Italy. Other notable Guest Conducting appearances include: an All-Mozart Gala for Cracow Opera in Poland; The Magic Flute for the Beijing Music Festival; Medea by Pacini with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana in Palermo, Italy; Verdi's rarely performed opera Giovanna d'Arco in the Czech Republic; Borodin's Russian masterpiece Prince Igor for the National Theater of Moravia-Silesia; Rigoletto and La Traviata for Opera Constanta in Romania; and Tosca at the Opern Air festival in Austria. Other european engagements include a highly regarded production of Bartók's Blue Beard's Castle and performances of Jenufa for the Hukvaldy Festival in the hometown of the famous Czech composer Leos Janácek. He travelled again to Asia to lead performances of Mendelssohn's Symphony no.2 "Lobgesang," for the International Macau Festival.
Maestro Paterson has appeared with most of Canada's professional companies. Recent appearances in Canada include Turandot for Vancouver Opera, Die Fledermaus for Manitoba Opera, Cav/Pag for Edmonton Opera, a gala concert for Opera de Quebec, La Voix humaine/Le Portrait de Manon for Opera Ontario, Hansel and Gretel for Calgary Opera and Otello for Opera Lyra Ottawa. Recent appearances in the United States include: Lucia di Lammermoor with Korean star Sumi Jo; Il barbiere di Siviglia for Opera Carolina; Don Giovanni and Turandot for Hawaii Opera Theater; Madama Butterfly for Fresno Grand Opera; and Aïda for the Nashville Opera.
Other notable upcoming engagements include; Manon for Calgary Opera; Carmen with Manitoba Opera, Manon in concert featuring Michael Schade for Opera Lyra Ottawa, as well as Macbeth for OLO.
Performances he has conducted have been broadcast on both CBC National Radio and CKUA radio. Career highlights include concerts featuring Ben Heppner with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra; Richard Margison with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra; Il trovatore featuring Richard Margison; Eugene Onegin featuring Russell Braun; gala concerts featuring numerous opera greats including Louis Quilico, Judith Forst, Ermanno Mauro and Alan Monk. In addition, Maestro Paterson is recognized for his commitment to creating performance opportunities for young Canadian rising opera stars and was instrumental in creating the OLO Opera Studio.
