Edward and Rebecca Riffitts |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
What is known about Edward Riffitts is interesting but a little disjointed. Revolutionary War records tell us that he was an assistant wheelwright at the Armory, hired by Col. Benjamin Hoover. After 1777, he was in five different artillery Battalions, through 1789. Apparently, he and his wife owned a tavern at 169 Vine Street, Philadelphia (City Directory), which was acquired in 1793 from John Penn the Elder and was sold to a schoolmaster named John Christopher Smith in 1797 (Deed Records). Claypoole's American Daily Adveriser, dated October 3, 1798 carries Edward's obituary. Further investigation showed that Edward was a victim of the third major outbreak of Yellow Fever in the City of Philadelphia in five years (1793, 1796, and 1798). His will, dated October 28, 1775, noted wife Rebecca, son William, daughters Mary and Margaret and mother Rachel. |
