Influence: Every learning situation and experience I have had in my life combine together to create my personality. My personality is what dictates who I am, the impression of who I want to be, and the application of that impression onto the reality of me. Subsequently the personality that I have decides what kind of ethical and moral concepts I have. Now whether my family, friends, institutions, or some other entity influenced my personality is irrelevant because in the end I make the choice to accept or reject their influence on my personality.

Responsibility: In a work environment I have a responsibility to my peers to not disgrace the reputation of our organization by participating in unethical actions. However, the responsibility extends to within the office so that my coworkers do not need to feel on guard that I will take unethical actions that could be dangerous to them. Last but not least I have a responsibility to my own feeling of self-respect and the ability to look myself in the mirror in the morning.

Truth: The truth is often all that matters. It is my belief that the truth must either be said or nothing should be said at all. Many people view the truth as subjective. I believe the truth is subjective however, in dealing with the truth people must be honest to their own concepts of reality. In being honest to the truth and the reality as I see it I cannot be wrong, I can only be disagreed with.

Lies: The enemies of the truth are lies. Lies must not be used in anyway or any form. I have stated in regards to truth “it is my belief that the truth must either be said or nothing should be said at all.”

Manipulation: Part of the goal of communications is to manipulate language into a form that communicates the desired message to the receiver. However, this does not include the manipulation of words to give a false impression of the truth. Manipulation has a negative connotation in our society because people consider it offensive to their freedom. However, the reality is that without manipulation of words there is no way to communicate to people. Therefore manipulation of language is necessary to the point that it more effectively communicates the desired message to the audience.

Temptation: The temptation to use unethical means to achieve legitimate goals is sometimes great. However, I consider giving in to temptation as a personal defeat of my own character. Giving in to the temptation to violate my ethics does nothing for anyone and the long-term effect is unhappiness.

Power: Ultimately power is what all the ethical responsibilities come down to. Without the power to make decisions ethical considerations are meaningless. The very basic power is simply the control over your own self. I can choose to ignore my principles or accept them. I can choose to do unethical actions that are requested of me by my superiors or I can choose to leave my job. Ultimately I hold the power over what I do or do not do.
