Not a Creature Was Stirring...
It's that magic time, not quite midnight and the air is still and heavy. Outside the temperature continues to fall and the Christmas lights, arranged with such loving care, sparkle on the balcony.
The kitty and the dog are both fast asleep, each curled into little prenatal balls. The cat, her head resting on puppy's side, purrs to no particular stimuli other than her own secret dreams. Earlier, she had groomed her opposite's ears until cleaned to her satisfaction. Then, she had quietly joined him in slumber, entering into that peaceful place that will propel her towards a new morning and another meal.
My life mate is asleep in the other room. I can hear the gentle snores as his body is rejuvinated in gentle slumber. Resting in quite content my dearest Keith sleeps, his tummy full from the evening meal of homemade burgers and oven fries.
I sit in the den, where I can hear the T.V. chattering from the living room, the dishwasher whirring in the kitchen and the furnace blower, circulating the temperate air. Everyone is at peace now, at rest and in another world oblivious to the one I consciously occupy.
I am content tonight. Content in the knowledge that another day will dawn in just a few more hours and that I did "pretty good" today in my roles as wife and mother and daughter.
Yes, the world is a good place tonight. And I am content in the knowledge that perhaps I did a little something today that may have contributed to making it that way for those whom I cherish and love.
