Onward & Upward, Graduate School

"The mind of the scholar, if he would leave it large and liberal, should come in contact with other minds."
--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I've been asked quite a few times why I decided to move all the way down to a small town in Georgia (Statesboro), about an hour away from Savannah, in order to attend grad school. There were a few reasons going on in my head. One being that I had family in Florida, only 3 hours away. Another was that I wanted to experience a new environment---the South. Also, I visited the school and liked it. I'm glad I chose Georgia Southern. Not only was it educational and an eye-opening experience, but I also met my 2 best friends there, Blossom and Julie. We were the only 3 first-year experimental tract students. The rest of the students were in the clinical tract.

One of the things I loved best was our trips into Savannah on a free weekend. Savannah is a city that likes to party. Seriously. They have a festival the first weekend of every month. They also have the 2nd largest (NYC has the largest) St. Patty's Parade and Celebration in the country. I know, I have been there. The historic districts (which is practically the whole of downtown) are the best to explore. You never know what you might find. Personally, I like investigating old cementeries. Anyhow, when we got out (when we weren't too busy studying which was a rare occurrence) we had a blast. City Market was a lot of fun! Hitting the jazz clubs! My friends ended up calling me the "Dancing Queen" after going to one, but that is a long story. =) Before we all left at the end of our second year we went out and had one of our best times. We went to a great Indian restaurant. In fact, I think that was the only Indian restaurant in town. It was very good. Then we went to Club One. If you have ever read the book "Midnight In The Garden Of Good & Evil" by John Berendt then you would know why we went to the only gay club in Savannah that has a drag show. . . . To see Lady Chablis, of course. It was a lot of fun, and Lady Chablis was perfection. (I can't wait to see her in the movie version of the book.)

I finished my 2 years at GSU with my Master's in psychology. By the end of the first year, I had decided that I didn't want to remain in grad school. I was a bit burned out on school, and I hadn't found a mentor, something you need at that level of schooling. I found one toward the end of my time at GSU, but it was too late. I love psychology, and maybe I'll go back to get my Ph.D. someday, but that will be far into the future. My thesis was on the how men and women differ in their verdict decision making on a case involving sexual harassment depending on the sex of the defense attorney. Long story short, there weren't many findings. I was also working on a project involving military children at nearby Ft. Stewart Army Base. If I do go back and study, I think that is where my focus would be in research. The effects of military life on children of military personnel (i.e., military brats). Anyhow, I was glad school was over. While Julie ventured to Virginia to study political science and Blossom went on to Georgia (Athens) to continue studying psychology, I was ready to find a job and earn some money. I was tired of being broke.
