Poetry by Edgar Allan Poe:

Eldorado

A Dream

The Lake

The Dance of Life

A beam of sunshine surrounds my weary heart.
A gift from Above?
An inner strength?
I care not of its origin, only of its delay.

Courage and Hope I find through this kindly patron.
I laugh aloud as it tickles my soul.
Louder and louder I laugh, for all to hear,
Tears of bliss streaming down my indebted face.

I open my eyes in awe,
As if seeing for the first time.

An ocean of the deepest blue ripples above my crown.

The grasses of the meadow tickle my feet,
As if tiny spiders were creeping across them.
Violets and dandelions dance in place,
Frantically waving their petals,
Thirsting for regard.

I pluck a delicate flower, her smile of gratitude
Sweeter than the most tender kiss.
The trees in the forest seem to bow down at my entrance,
Their canopy of leaves whispering amongst themselves.

An opening in the dark clouds reveals my tiny beam of light
Gaining strength,
Overpowering the clouds of my once wayward life.

This shimmering creature surrounds my being,
Lifting my higher and higher into a haven of peace and joy.
I no longer exist alone, for I have become one with all that is.
A free bird, I soar high into the abyss of Eden.
All things true, nothing denied: a state if immaculate contentment.

I realize suddenly that I am falling,
Drifting, rather, like a single snowflake fluttering to the ground.
I am standing on soil once again.

I am taken aback at what I have witnessed for an instant:
A ballet of survival – the Dance of Life.

And although those dark, menacing clouds at times reappear,
They are no longer threatening, frightening no more;
For in that moment of ecstatic rapture,
I found the strength to abide
Once again.
