Kim's Favorite Books
Looking for a good book to read? These are some of my favorite books:
A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follett
This is the most charming mystery I have ever read! The characters are painted so well that I felt like I knew them. It takes place in England, late 1800's; I felt like I was there! If you want to travel to a different time and place, READ THIS BOOK!
A Place Called Freedom also by Ken Follett
This book will also take you to a different time and place(s), this time Scotland, England, and America, in the 1700's, right before the constitution was signed. It is as fascinating as it is sad. That is, if you can stand to read about cruelty and slavery. But it's a story that needs to be told, and in this book it's told extremely well. If you like history, you'll love this book. Even the preface is facinating!
A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines
Heartbreaking yet captivating story about a black man on death row in the south, circa 1955. This book was so good that in order to give the ending the attention it deserved, I made sure I was in a quite place with no interuptions, so that I could take in every breath of it. All I can say is, After you read this book, the words "self-respect" will never sound the same again.
The Concubine's Children by Denise Chong
What's interesting about this story is, it's true. It's about a man with two families, one in China and one in Canada. The book sends a strong message about the impact of the Chinese culteral revolution, and at the same time tells a personal story about the divided family. Some of it was a little slow, however, after you finish reading it, the story stays with you.
A Single Tear by Ningkum Wu and Yikai Li
This is a very well written memoir by a husband and wife, about their life in communist China in the 50's and 60's, in which they survived prison, hunger, separation, to name a few. In one part of the book, she tells about how she was assigned to a job post by the government, away from her baby. Since she wouldn't be able to breastfeed, she had to buy milk on the black market! There were no luxuries such as going to the grocery store to buy baby formula. And yet, she deals with it and copes! That's not the worst of what they had to go through! This couple sets the definition for strength of charactor. Very inspiring and enriching book.
The Firm by John Grisham
This is a given. Everyone who likes to read has already read this book a long time ago. Still, any list of favorite books wouldn't be complete without mentioning this one. If by chance you haven't yet read it, DO! If you think you already know the story because you saw the movie, think again. The movie is different from the book. The book is better!!! (I like all of John Grisham's books.)
Dragon Tears by Dean Koontz
This is one wild book! It's actually kind of a silly story, involving a scary villian with supernatural powers, and two cops who are trying to stop whoever or whatever it is. What's great about it, besides being a suspenseful page turner, is that the charactors are so well painted, you feel like you know them. You'll love the dog in it. Also has a big anti-drug message. Fairly violent, it's worth reading if you can stand the violence.
Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
I loved this book even before it became a Pulitzer prize winner. It's the author's memior about his childhood in a poverty stricken Ireland neighborhood, his alcoholic father and depressed mother. But what's great about the book is, he tells the story with humor, compassion, and meticulous detail. Very worth reading!
Dave Barry in Cyberspace by Dave Barry
If you've ever in your life even gotten near a computer, you'll ROLL with laughter from the beginning of this book to the end! From the hilarious way he illustrates "Spell Check", to his explanation of how fast your new computer becomes outdated just as soon as you get it out of the box, your cheek muscles will ache long after you have finished this book. Read it! ... but not in public!
