Dear Elizabeth

I was looking for information on Elizabeth Godfrey and Stephen Kerrison - I am a descendant of Elizabeth's sister Anne Godfrey (through her son Thomas Griffin), and am tracking the other children of that Godfrey family who also came to Australia from Ireland. Thank you for the information, you have added to our family tree considerably.

Incidentally, one of the Elizabeth and Stephen Kerrison's sons, Arthur Edgar Kerrison, married another relative of mine Amy Peisley (which you have down in your information). Amy's aunt, Emma McCoy (Emma was a younger sister of Amy's mother Martha McCoy) married Thomas Griffin. Elizabeth Godfrey was Thomas's aunt (making Arthur Edgar Kerrison his first cousin). I suppose this kind of inter-relationship is not uncommon in small country communities.

In any case, thank you again, if you or any of your contacts is interested in our family, feel free to pass on my contact details

Best wishes

Katherine Jones

From on Thursday, 9 April, 2009, The earliest known in Tasmanian records are William Maumill father of Emanuel, and a Mary Ann Maumill 1818 - 1893, died aged 75 at Beaconsfield, Tasmania appears to be wife of William. Emanuel MAUMILL was born on 6 Jul 1845 in Richmond Hill, Tasmania, Australia and died on 12 Feb 1896 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia at age 50. Another name for Emanuel was Emanuel MAWMILL.
Emanuel married Susan WILLIAMS, daughter of George WILLIAMS and Ann SULLIVAN. Susan was born on 2 May 1846 in Richmond Hill, Tasmania, Australia. They had 11 children: George Emanuel Maumill, James Thomas Maumill, Amelia Joan Maumill 1870, Emanuel James Maumill, Susan Elizabeth Theresa Maumill, Herbert Edward Maumill, Walter William Maumill, Louis George Maumill, Joseph Henry Maumill, Joanna Ada Maumill and Charles Victor Gilro Maumill. Secondly...you may be interested to know that there appears to have and is only one family in the World named Maumill...though some variants in the name were written down due to language difficulties

For notes on Mary Ann Campbell who wed William Maumill, see Webpage by unknown, descendents of James CAMPBELL, born in 1760 in Scotland. When Mary Ann was 12, her family were on the Hibernia, 5 Dec 1832 when the second Mate set fire to the spirits as he was drawing the usual allowance of rum for the people. There were about 232 souls on board and about 150 were killed in the chaos. And William's story too - he came as number 48723 - William Mawmell arrived 07 Nov 1830 at Hobart on the Persian (2) which sailed on 28 Jun 1830 from Falmouth, UK. That leads to the Book of Convict names and Page 33 has William, tried at Lincoln 27 Oct 1829 and sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing a sheep worth 3/-. His Ticket of Leave was dated 19 Oct 1836 and about all he had done wrong was to get drunk about once a year.

From on 2 Jan 2005

I am interested in Herbert Henry KERRISON born 28 January 1877 George Town Tasmania son, I believe of Henry Kerrison.

Herbert Henry Kerrison m. Clara Florence Artis, the daughter of Margaret Smith and Joshua Artis who wed 1869 - LAUNCESTON, Tasmania and had 10 children.

Margaret ARTIS nee Smith is believed to be the sister of :
Clara Smith wed ANDREWS
Mary Ann Smith wed GRANT
Martha Smith wed MILLER

Another researcher belives the parents of Mary Ann Smith GRANT to be Thomas SMITH (William Metcalfe) and Eliza DOWNEY (East London) who married in Hobart 28/4/1845 RGD 37 1879/1845. I cannot locate the birth of a Clara to these people.

Do you know anything of the parents of Margaret Smith ARTIS? Are there any descendants of Herbert Henry and Clara Florence KERRISON who may have details of these people?

The Wymondham Registers record
James Currison baptised 23 July 1769, son of John and Sarah Currison
James Kerrison of Silfield (a district of Wymondham) died 21 June 1819 aged 50
James Kerrison wed 28 July 1795 to Mary Long
Mary Kerrison of Silfield died 12 July 1819 aged 50 (3 weeks after her husband)

The Wymondham registers reveal two called Stephen Kerrison,
one baptised 13 May 1798 son of James Kerrison and Mary Long,
and one baptised 25 Dec 1799, son of John Kerrison and Mary Bunn
Our Stephen's age at death of 82, as recorded on his tombstone, matches the Stephen born in 1799.
Comment - Another supporting clue is the use of John as the name of the first son, I could not see why James was not used till the 4th son was born.
Eliza Kerrison was baptised 7 Sep 1823, daughter of Stephen and Mary Kerrison
Twins Mary and Stephen baptised 10 May 1825, children of Stephen Kerrison and Mary Goodings. Stephen was buried 20 May and Mary on 28 May 1825
Mary Kerrison nee Goodings died at Supply River, Tasmania 24 Jan 1880

John Kerrison wed Dinah (Diana) Wright and migrated to America at the same time as his brother, our Stephen Kerrison, and his Mary 'were high-tailing it to Van Diemans Land'.

INFO FROM TASMANIA: THE VOYAGE;
CSO1/815/17435; pages 173-175 ( Tassy Records):
Launceston, Nov 20th., 1835.
To James Henty, Esquire.
Sir,
A sense of duty towards an individual whose ability as a Seaman and whose conduct as a Gentleman during the Voyage of the "Charles Kerr" from England to this place - it would be injustice to allow to remain unnoticed, induced me to intrude myself on your notice by means of this letter with a view to bring that conduct under the attention of the Authority of this Colony by whom I am convinced it will not fail to be duly appreciated.
For some time before the arrival of the "Charles Kerr" at this port, it was the wish of all persons on board, to present Captain Arnold with a note of thanks for his very gentlemanly conduct and great attention towards them on the passage, and upon making the Land on Tuesday last, I at the request of the passengers, generally addressed a note to the superintendant, desiring him to inform Captain Arnold of their wish and to know when it would be convenient to him to receive a deputation for the purpose of presenting it.
To that note I received a reply from Mr. Weymouth informing us that Captain Arnold did not feel himself at liberty to leave for one moment the duty of his ship, a prudence we have since seen the value of, as we had not then heard the melancholy accounts of the wrecks on King George's Headland or Sound , - but upon the Pilot coming on board to take charge of the ship, he would be proud to receive the proposed deputation - the pilot came on board on Wednesday morning - the remainder of that day was - and we waitred until afternoon when after speaking to Mr Weymouth, I received a note from him informing me that Caprtain Arnold did not want to receive any formal tribute of thanks from the passengers - a decision we had not time or oppurtunity to prevail on him to forego - to which you of your own knowledge can bear testimony.
We believe his public duties and the anxiety consequent on approaching the port, banished from his mind all feelings of a private nature and it is therefore our wish that the authorities should not be precluded by his disinterestedness from knowing our sentiments recollecting this truly meritorious and amiable commander. I, in consequence, take the liberty to request on behalf of the passengers generally that you as consigner (consignee?) of the "Charles Kerr" will take an opportunity of laying before them the accompanying paper which however humbly couched will vie in sincerity with one of a a more elaborate or eloquent description.
. I am, Sir, with much respect, your obedient and humble servant, signed James Sibley.

CSO1/815/17435;pages 176-178:
To Hargord Arnold, Esq., Commander of the "Charles Kerr":
Bass Strait, November 28th 1835.
Sir,
We, the undersigned passengers of the "Charles Kerr" from England to Van Diemen's Land, desire, previous to leaving the vessel, to present you with our sincere and heartfelt thanks for the gentlemanly conduct and for the kind and considerate attention you have shown us during the time we have been on the voyage.
Without referring to the reasons that induced us to leave England by your ship, or our pretensions on arriving in the land of our adoption, we consider ourselves peculiarly fortunate that you should have been chosen to conduct our Voyage from that part of the World to this, for without intending any disrespect to the service of which you are unquestionably destined to become a distinguished member - we imagine some improper person might have been found, but I feel convinced at the same time, that no one more proper than yourself could possibly have been selected to conduct so important and delicate a commission.
It had given us great pleasure to observe and we have equal pleasure in recording that during the indisposition of your officers and from numerous inexplicable causes, peculiarly incident in the life of a seaman, the general regard you have shown to the comfort of the passengers and crew, that steady perseverence of conduct and promptness of execution we cannot too much admire and but insufficiently commend.
..... We have only now, Sir, to express a hope, that during the time you may think proper to continue in your present important and enterprising a situation, your voyage may be prosperous and happy, that the conduct by which you have been guided on the present occasion, may guide you the remainder of your public life, and that upon your retirement into private society, you may carry with you the kind protection(?) of that providence who through you have so graciously conducted us to the shores of this Land, the approbation fo your friends and the testimony of a good conscience, an Honest Man's Best Reward.
signed (48 passengers, including 22 men including Steven Kerrison).
