Wells for Women: Alumnae Petition Many alumnae -- even those willing to accept an eventual or partial move to coeducation -- have serious reservations about the lack of community input in this decision, the suddeness of the move, the extremely narrow time frame for implementation, and the true viability of this proposed transformation.

BACKROUND INFORMATION:

 The petition began on April 7, and was submitted to the Board of Trustees and Administration on April 27th with 305 signatures. Our concerns were ignored.

Responses from the Alumnae Relations Office were either reassuring or dismissive. The President offered hints in her lengthy reunion speech, but she did not share concrete information in a forthright fashion. An expected faculty review of the coeducation issue did not take place over the summer. (The president neither appointed nor convened a committee.)

Trying to gain a role for alumnae, faculty, and students in a decision making process which appeared to be moving ahead with no community consultation, the began circulating again on September 7 and was re-submitted with 517 signatures on the 27.

Until October 2nd, many alumnae believed the information from A.A. officials that the Trustee's decision would apply only to the overseas, book arts, and MAT programs. Many remembered and believed Lisa's strong defense of women's education, repeated in public as recently as last spring.

With the suddent announcement of full co-education commencing in August 2005, the petition began electronic circulation again.

The undersigned alumnae of Wells College wish to express concern for the many students at Wells College who have petitioned the Board of Trustees asking that the college remain true to its mission to educate women.

We believe that radical possibilities such as coeducation need to be examined fully by the entire Wells Community in open and meaningful discussion before action is taken. We think it extremely unfortunate that current students find themselves subject to a process apparently built on concealment rather than consensus.

We are concerned that while the students were told of the possibility of coeducation in February, the alumnae remain uninformed. The Alumnae Association Board did not notify the membership of this possibility in its March newsletter, and the Alumnae Relations Office has not included information about this possibility in its numerous e-mailings, web pages, or publications.

We are further concerned that the possibility of coeducation seems to remain unevaluated by the Wells faculty. Coeducation was not included in the four proposals of the Strategic Wells Action Team approved by the faculty for submission to the Board of Trustees, nor is it found as an item of business in the minutes of the Academic Planning and Policy Committee.

We ask the Board of Trustees to include all parts of the Wells College community — current students, serving faculty, and the membership of the alumnae association — in a full and open review prior to reaching any decision about the possibility of abandoning Wells College’s great historic and contemporary strength as an educational institution for women.
