GLAUCOMA RESEARCH The University of Missouri folks have done it again!!! While studying a family of Basset Hounds with glaucoma, the researchers have noted some encouraging preliminary results. Now, they are very interested in studying affected dogs of other breeds to see if they can duplicate the findings. They have extended an invitation to Welsh Terrier owners and breeders who have encountered Glaucoma. Our participation in the University of Missouri All-Breed Epilepsy study continues as well. We are so fortunate to have these opportunities, at no cost to WTCA. Ideally, the researchers are interested in samples from Welsh Terriers affected with Glaucoma, normal siblings and parents. Go to Canine Genetic Disease Network . Click on to the "Sample Submission" section on the left. The most important forms are:
If your vet does not have mailing boxes, you may use any sturdy cardboard box. Wrap the vial(s) in absorbent material, then in bubble wrap and surround with a frozen reusable ice pack (available from your vet or at Walmart). The samples need only be cool, not frozen. Place the contents of the box into double, freezer, zip lock bags to prevent condensation. Pad the box well with crumpled newspaper or foam "peanuts" to guard against breakage. Place all paperwork into a separate zip lock bag to keep it dry, despite a sweating cool pack. Be sure to use overnight shipping on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for best results. Liz Hansen, Coordinator of Veterinary Information, is willing to mail or fax the information to anyone who cannot or prefers not to download it. You may contact her at the University of Missouri: Office: (573)884-3712 Dept. Fax: (573)884-5414 e-mail: HansenL@missouri.edu PLEASE, do not let this opportunity slip by. Those of you who have had an affected Welsh know the heartache involved. Invest a little time and effort in this project so that we may become DNA research pioneers. Welsh Terriers could be on the cutting edge of some VERY important findings. It is up to you not to drop the ball! DONATE your dogs blood and your dollars JUST FOR THE HEALTH OF IT. |
