Cruise to Alaska June 30 to July 10, 2000 Page 7, The Sun Princess and College Fjord |

We finally boarded our cruise ship in Seward.
From the deck of the Sun Princess in Seward, on Resurrection
Bay

The face of a glacier...it really does
look blue! If you're VERY, VERY quiet, you can hear the glacier crackling
and popping as pieces of ice break off and fall into the sea and as pockets
of compressed air, trapped for millennia, are suddenly and explosively released. The black, or dirty striations and layers of the glacier are dirt and rocks that have fallen on it and are being carried to the sea. This
glacier is about one hundred feet thick.
(For those who care: The color
is caused by the absorption of the longer (infrared) rays of light
by the ice, leaving only the
blue rays visible. It is exactly the same phenomenon which makes the sky look blue--in case you ever wondered.)

Icebergs look smaller than they actually are since 70%, or more, of the ice
is underwater!
Although we never got too close, way off
in the distance, barely visible,
Sea Otters could be seen playing in the
water
Leaving the quiet grandeur of College Fjord,
the only ripples in the water are those created by the ship's own wake.
