Mary Lee, Former
Local Postmistress
Mrs. Mary E. Lee, 81, widely-known former Westerville postmistress and one-time colorful figure in Ohio Republican politics, died Friday in the Masonic Home, Springfield.
A resident of Westerville for more than 55 years, she was a native of Amesville, Athens Co. She attended Ohio University as a member of the Class of 1894.
Appointed postmistress by Warren G. Hardin, she held that position seven years. She was a friend of President Harding, Sen. Frank B. Willis and Gov. Myers Y Cooper. Prominent political leaders thoughout the state sought her advice.
She was the great-great-granddaughter of Manassah Cutler, founder of Ohio University. She founded the Ohio Republican party periodical, which she edited for several years.
Her husband, the late Vernon Lee, at one time operated a coal and lumber company in Westerville. Mrs. Lee was a member of the Westerville Presbyterian Church, and a past Matron of Mizpah Chapter Order of The Eastern Star.
Surviving are five nieces, Mrs. Russel Barnes, 678 S. Western Ave., Columbus; Mrs. Mary Sands, Malta, Ohio; one in California, two in Colorado, and a nephew in Ariona.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Stockdale Memorial Funeral Home by the Rev. L. G. Kemmerle. Entombment Otterbein Mausoleum.
