Former publisher dies

Funeral services were Tuesday for former Public Opinion publisher and theater owner A. Dwight Curfman, Sr., 76, of 64 W. Broadway, who succumbed Saturday in Riverside Hospital.
Born in Athens County, near Glouster, he graduated from Glouster High School in 1914 and entered the at Ohio State University. He joined the U.S. Navy when the country entered World War I, serving until 1919.
On his release from the Navy, he married the former Ruth White and moved to Akron, where he worked for the B. F. Goodrich Co., and later was employed by newspapers in Akron and Lorain before purchasing the Public Opinion in 1921, first in a partnership and later as sole owner, until its sale in 1946.
In 1927 he built the State Theater, which he operated until his death. He was also owner of the Vernon Avenue Weekly.
A member of the United Methodist Church of the Master, he was a 50-year member of Blendon Lodge, F & A.M., Scottish Rite, and the U.S. Power Squadron.
Preceded in death by his wife, in 1965, and by one son, Lt. Robert Curfman, during World War II, he is survived by one son, A. Dwight Curfman Jr., Westerville; four granddaughters, Mrs. Garry (Carole) Kelley, Arizona; Mrs. David (Karen) Birchem, Westerville; Mrs. James (Christy) Mabbott, Columbus; and Miss Cynthia Curfman, Westerville; sisters, Mrs. Ruthanne Wright and Mrs. Anthorene Orr, both of Columbus; brother Kenneth of Cincinnati and Harrison of Mt. Vernon.
Arrangements were made by Moreland and Son Funeral Home, and the Rev. Laurence E. Feaver officiated. Entombment was in Otterbein Mausoleum.
