There were no donations from the baseball concessions. The Athletic Department will take care of the $248.50 Pepsi bill in order to receive the $11,000 check.

SPORTS PROGRAM: A sample of the Program was available to see. $500 was paid to Pam Truesdell for her work. To date there is a profit of $200.00. We need volunteers to sell the prograrns at the games, from which we will garnerat even more profits. We will discuss at a later date whether to charge more for ads next year. WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL
BOOSTER CLUB MEETING
May 2, 2005

MEMBERS PRESENT: AD Ken Laake, Assistant AD and coach Lori Troescher, Officers John Lusher, Dave Smith and Linnenberg, coaches Jim Robb and George Williams, and members Don and Sherry Hodge, John Linnenberg and Jason “Doc” Rector.

The meeting was held at Price Hill Chili and the Minutes were approved as read.

TREASURER’S REPORT: The following statements are to comply with National City’s requests: The Western Hills High School Boosters authorize Lori Troescher and Dave Smith to sign checks, make deposits, withdraw funds, and conduct any and all other business with all accounts.  Only one signature is required.  Katie Donnelly is no longer an authorized signer on said accounts.  Lori and Dave are to sign new signature cards.

NEW OFFICERS: John Lusher was thanked for his dedication and hard work.  He has agreed, however, to continue to monitor and enhance the Booster web site.  George Williams was nominated for President, Dave Smith for Treasurer, and Linda Linnenberg for Secretary.  There were no candidates for Vice President.  The candidates were unanimously elected for a one-year period.

AD’S REPORT: There is no new news on the stadium and no construction has begun.  Our football games will be scheduled at Taft.  As soon as the principals and campus coordinator are determined, Ken will begin discussions on a bookstore.  The summer sports schedules have been printed and given to Dater, University and Design Technology to mail out or distribute as they see fit.

FUNDRAISERS: Ken Laake has talked to various companies who run Texas Hold Em events.  He will look into dates available at Cheviot Field House.  A minimal output of approximately $200 for advertising is needed, and the company runs the tables for a cut of the profit.  We still want to pursue Sports Programs for fall and winter sports.  We need to check with Dan Taylor on his progress with ad sales.  Ken said the team pictures are taken in August.  Ken will check with printers.  Lori suggested we look into having a booth at West Fest, which will be held June 25th-26th in Cheviot.  We could sell the various T-shirts in our inventory and get our name out there.  Linda will call and get information on the event.

SOFTBALL: Coach Troescher said her team is 10-3 with 4 league games to go.  Presently they are 2nd in the League.  They play Winton Woods in the first tournament game Monday, May 9th at Fairfield.  The team will lose only 3 seniors.

BASEBALL: The team is 2nd in the League, losing to Withrow twice.

CHECKS WRITTEN: $98.00 to Lori for the bowling pin lamps.  (Payment approved at last meeting)  A check for $91.49 was written to George Williams for wrestling youth awards.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

·         June 1st—Spring Sports Banquet.  Athletes from all seasons with a 3.5 accume will receive a patch

·         June 6th—CPS Sports Awards Banquet

·         June 1-July 6—Jim Robb will run a summer soccer camp Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-7:30.

The next meeting is yet to be determined.  We may need volunteers if we have the Texas Hold Em night and /or a booth at West Fest.

Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing summer!

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Linnenberg

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

April 3, 2005

MEMBERS PRESENT: AD Ken Laake, Assistant AD and coach Lori Troescher, Officers John Lusher, Dave Smith and Linda Linnenberg, wrestling coach George Williams and Jason “Doc” Rector.

The Minutes were approved as read.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Dave Smith reported as of March 3rd the Boosters have $10,773.75 in savings and a CD of approximately $12,8000.  When the CD becomes due April 9, we voted to invest in a 9 month CD at a rate of 3.3%.

NEW SPORTS FACILITY: Ken Laake reported weather permitting ground will be broken in a week or two.  The latest information is the Board will pay for a state of the art baseball field and a practice football field where JV and 9th grade games will be held, as well as all practices.  Adding bleachers and a press box to accommodate varsity games would have mandated additional bathroom facilities that the Board was not willing to pay for.  This would increase the moneys we would need to privately raise to $800,000.00 and that is beyond our capability.  There will be some bleachers provided

SCHOOL SPIRIT: We need to increase school spirit!  It was stated the students don’t even know the school fight song.  George Williams suggested we provide glass cases or billboards to promote team schedules, game or match scores, and interesting statistics or records set.  We discussed various possibilities where these cases could be located such as the front hall, lunchrooms and the Hall of Honor hall.  A spirit shop to sell hats, T-shirts, pencils, etc. is still a big priority.

BASEBALL: The boys are 2-2 and beat Woodward and Hughes (22-4).

SOFTBALL:  The girls are 2-0 and on this date beat Hughes 26-3.  As voted on and approved at the March 7 meeting, the Boosters will pay for the punch and cake for the meet-the-parents event.  Any additional costs will come out of the softball fund.

TRACK: The boys and girls have a meet at Ross April 5th.

WRESTLING: George Williams submitted the following bills to be paid for out of the wrestling fund: Westside Wrestling ($400.00), Youth singlets ($614.10), and Jr. Hi T-shirts ($150.00).  Subtracting this total of $1164.10 leaves the wrestling fund with a balance of $7016.35.  The Pepsi bill will be deducted from his concession profits and 10% of this net will go to the Boosters.  George informed us he no longer wants to run the basketball concessions and he thinks the Booster Club should assume responsibility

GIRLS BOWLING: The girls lost to State Champs Seton (so in our view they were 2nd in the state) and a bowling pin was given to them for each girl.  Lori talked to the construction class and they agreed to make lamps out of the pins.  Lori bought the electrical wiring, shades, etc. and the Boosters moved, seconded, and voted unanimously to pay for the expenses.

AD’S REPORT: Ken is going to take pictures of the spring teams and John Lusher agreed to put them on our web site.  April 16th is West High’s Open House and Ken plans to have tables manned by coaches set up in the front hall from 12-3.00.  Ken explained we would have no home varsity football games this fall.  Oak Hills has agreed to host our game with them and split the profits.  It is Elder’s turn to host the 2005 West High-Elder game, but starting in 2006, Elder has agreed to host every year and give us a prearranged $10,000 as part of the profits.  We threw around ideas for a possible end of year picnic for the 2004 coaches, a coaches and parents get together in August, and meet-the-parents events before every new season.  At this time the banquet date would be announced so the parents would be well informed.

The Price Hill Old Timers Banquet will be held May 5th and Holly Hodge is West High’s designated honoree.  William R. Alexander whose Trust gives an annual baseball scholarship will also be honored.

John Lusher is retiring as Booster president and we want to thank him for all his input and work.  We are considering nominations for future officers and are in need of volunteers and suggestions.

Dave Smith is looking into a restaurant for our May meeting which will be held May 2.  More information will follow when plans finalized.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Linnenberg

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

March 7, 2005

MEMBERS PRESENT: Assistant AD and Coach Lori Troescher, Officers John Lusher, Dave Smith and Linda Linnenberg, and coaches Doug Sargent and George Williams.

The Minutes were approved as read.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Dave Smith reported the Booster Checking Account has $8,994.29 at a current rate of 0.4%.  Our CD has $12,793.78 at a 1.61%.  We again discussed taking part of our CD and investing it at a higher rate, but it was noted at least several thousand of the CD is comprised of wrestling, softball and baseball funds.  Also, once again we did not have sufficient members present to make a decision other than we hope to be able to invest in a 6-month CD at some future date.  As approved at the February 7, 2005 meeting, we did not write a check to Pepsi, as there was a discrepancy in our credit due since Pepsi would accept only 2 of the 17 remaining unsold cases.  We are awaiting a new bill.  Funds from 2 membership checks are to be deposited.  New checks are being ordered.

GIRLS’BASKETBALL: Coach Sargent reported they would have a Spring and Summer League.  He has found a sponsor to pay for 3 summer camps in North Carolina, Wilmington, Ohio and Canton, Ohio.  The girls will also be running a girl’s summer basketball camp at West High.

WRESTLING: Coach Williams reported our team placed 2nd in the League.  We had 3 firsts, 2 seconds, 3 thirds and 2 fourths.  Joshua Thorpe moved on to Districts in the 140-pound class.  Coach Williams was very proud of his team as they went 5-5 in the Duals and scored twice as many points as they did last year.  Next year could be another good year as only 3 wrestlers graduate.

BOWLING: The boys had a good first year but lost to Madeira in the first round.  The girls lost in the third round to Seton (coached by Officer Jim Robb) who went on to win the State Championship.  Six of the 10 girls plan to return next year.

SOFTBALL: Coach Troescher stated the girls will have both reserve and varsity teams.  Lori again plans to have a Meet-the-Parents event before the season starts.  The Boosters agreed to pay for the cake and punch.

Lori reported Peggy Peeples has begun practicing for girls’ track and she is looking for more participants.  Mark Beauchamp of Design Technology will be coaching the boys’ team.  Calvin Johnson has been hired as the new football coach.

BOOKSTORE:  George Williams suggested a new concession stand area be situated near the centrally located bookstore that is still under consideration.  He stated he thought a partition could be constructed where the current vending machines are located.

Next meeting is Monday, April 4th, 7:00pm, Dater lunchroom.  It is time to consider nominations for future officers.  We need more members and interested parents and coaches to attend so we can make some important decisions about our club and the new sports stadium.  The 4th is the first day back after Spring Break so mark your calendars and come out and show your school spirit!

Respectfully yours,

Linda Linnenberg

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

February 7, 2005

MEMBERS PRESENT: AD Ken Laake, Assistant AD and Coach Lori Troescher, Officers John Lusher and Linda Linnenberg, and Coach Doug Sargent.

The Minutes were approved as read.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Dave Smith was unable to attend the meeting but sent the attached report.  Lori reported West High has one more home basketball game Feb. 11 and then Pepsi will pick up the unsold pop on Feb. 14.  Once the credit is determined, Lori asked if she could have approval to pay the bill immediately.  This was so moved, seconded and passed.  Because so few members were present, we could not make a decision on whether to cash in our CD and use all or part of it for the new stadium.  Bill Reusing of AWHAA is working on a letter to notify alumni of our need for money for the bleachers and press box.  Ken Laake has spoken with Bob Bedinghaus, Community Relations Director for the Bengals, to see if the Bengals could provide grant money for any facet of the Arch McCartney Athletic Complex.

BOWLING: The boys have a tournament Feb. 7 and the girls compete against Goshen and Clark Academy Feb.8 and Seton Feb. 9.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: The girls were 4-15 and begin tournament play Feb. 9 against Seton at Harrison at 6:00.  Coach Sargent happily reported 16 girls will return next year and he is very optimistic.  He said he has a sponsor to send the girls to summer team camps.  He has suggested to the girls to play a fall sport to stay in shape.  Coach Sargent asked if his team and their parents could participate in running the fall concessions.  Once we learn where our football schedule will be played concessions can be further discussed.  Coach Sargent wanted to acknowledge and thank Mr. Matthews for new basketball chairs and traveling bags for his team.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL: The boys are 8 and 9.  They play Withrow Feb. 11, Mt. Healthy Feb. 12, and a makeup game with Hughes at Hughes Feb. 16.  They drew LaSalle for their first tournament game.

WRESTLING: Because of a water main leak at Mt. Healthy, the League Tournament was rescheduled for this date.

AD REPORT: This year there were only 7 boys’ home basketball games.  Next year there will be 11 and then we will return to the usual 10-10 rotation.  Len said he would help set up a Thanksgiving Girls Basketball Tournament that Coach Sargent requested.  Ken stated he is working on finding a neutral location for a bookstore and ticket booth.

Next meeting is March 7th, 7:00pm, Dater lunchroom.  We need more members and interested parents and coaches to attend so we can make some important decisions.  Mark your calendars!

Respectfully yours,

Linda Linnenberg

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

January 3, 2005

MEMBERS PRESENT: AD Ken Laake, Assistant AD and coach Lori Troescher, Officers John Lusher, Dan Taylor, Dave Smith and Linda Linnenberg; Coach George Williams and members John Linnenberg and Jason “Doc” Rector.

The Minutes were approved as read.

TREASURY REPORT: Dave Smith reported the Boosters have $9,648.40 in savings and a CD of $12,776.00 which becomes due every 30 days.  We discussed whether to change the one CD to several maturing at different times in order to earn more interest.  Dave said he would look into it.  Current signature cards were signed.  George Williams stated Dick Scott Plumbing had donated $100 to the Wrestling Program and asked if Dave could acknowledge it in writing for the company’s tax purposes.  George requested $980.00 from the Wrestling Fund to pay for warm-up suits for the JV Team.  The request was moved, seconded and passed.  The cake and drinks for the Wrestling Meet-the-Parents Night came to $30.17.  Payment for the bill was approved.  Lori Troescher requested $75.00 (Pizza-$55, Fruit and pretzels-$20) for lunch at the Bowling Holiday Classic Tournament held Dec.18th.  The Tournament ran from 8:15-5:00 with no lunch included.  Request was approved.

NEW SPORTS FACILITY: We again reviewed the detailed architect plans.  The following names will be used: Arch McCartney Athletic Complex, Paul Nohr Baseball Field and the Glenn Sample Football Field.  The scoreboard will be on an angle so both baseball and football can use it.  The bullpens will be enclosed and there will be no seating behind home plate.  Because the baseball field is a Center for Excellence, the school district will rent it for the summer and keep the proceeds.  Because the football field is considered a practice field, West High will be able to rent it and keep the proceeds.  Bill Reusing of AWHAA is heading up the campaign for raising money for the football press box and bleachers.  All avenues of fundraising (grants, Dater Foundation, Bengals, parties, etc.) were discussed.  Ken Laake said a meeting is to be held Jan. 6th with Bill Reusing to discuss a fund raising letter to be sent to alums.  Dave Smith asked to be put on the committee.  Ground breaking is to take place in early February.

FUNDRAISING: Many ideas were discussed to raise money for the Boosters and the Sports Facility.  Dan Taylor said we should offer Fall and Winter Sports Programs.  He said some friends have offered to help him start selling advertisements that have the potential to raise a lot of money.  Lori said she knows a printer.  Ken said we could also sell advertising space on gym windows, fence around the baseball field, back of press box, etc.  Lori suggested we contact Empress Chili about pregame meals for parents and fans.  Ken talked about the profits other schools have made from Texas Holdem Contests.  A school bookstore was again discussed and who might run it and where it might be.  The possibility of community service student involvement was suggested.  Ken will talk to Mr. Holbrook.  All these ideas will be further investigated.

WRESTLING: George Williams said the Wrestling Team is doing well despite the fact they usually have to forfeit 5 weight classes.  At the Oak Hills Meet they were 7th out of 16 teams.  They placed 2nd at the Hughes Meet and were 11/2 points out of 4th at the Norwood Meet.  Senior Night is January 19th.

BOWLING: Both the girls and boys teams are progressing and have received favorable comments from the Western Bowl employees.  The boys finished 21st out of 36 at the Holiday Classic and 4th against Reading.  Both Lori and Dan said they and the kids are having a lot of fun.

BASKETBALL:  The Varsity Girls Team has won 3 games and the Reserve 4 games.  The Boys are 2-4.  Their difficult schedule should help them as League play begins.

AWHAA AWARDS DINNER: The dinner has been set for February 2 at The Meadows.  Bill Reusing, Dr. Bill Gerhardt and Carol Smith are 3 of the honorees.  Tickets are only $40.00 so everyone should come and support this important event and money raiser.  George Williams suggested the Boosters buy a table.  It was decided President John Lusher and his wife be guests of the Boosters.

This is an important time to continue the traditions of Western Hills High School.  We need everyone’s ideas, enthusiasm and support.  The Boosters meet the first Monday of every month and we encourage everyone to come and contribute.

Next Meeting: Feb. 7th, 7:00pm, Dater lunchroom.

Respectfully yours,

Linda Linnenberg

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

December 6, 2004

MEMBERS PRESENT: Assistant AD and Coach Lori Troescher, President John Lusher, Secretary Linda Linnenberg, Coaches Lonnie Oldham and George Williams, and members Sherry Hodge, John Linnenberg, Jason "Doc" Rector, and Dave Smith.

The Minutes were approved as read.

Dave Smith has agreed to serve as Treasurer until the end of the year.  He will present a report at our next meeting of the exact amounts in the CD and savings account.

TREASURY:  John Lusher introduced a long discussion of the value of the Booster Club and whether we should start spending some of our treasury to benefit the athletes.  Suggestions were made to talk to the coaches to see if there were any camps from which some athletes might benefit.  Giving scholarships to college bound athletes was also suggested.  George stated his wrestling parents participate and work long hours to raise money and he does not think it would be fair to give equally to all sports if the parents don’t contribute.  He suggested possibly money could be allocated according to the percentage of parents who join the Booster from each sport.  Lori liked the comments but stated the new facility will benefit all the West High students and it may need some funding from us.

NEW SPORTS FACILITY: We viewed the detailed architecture plans.  The baseball field will be real grass and serve as the host field for the District.  The Board’s budget includes the following items: viewing stands, scoreboard, picnic area, Hall of Honor, building for restrooms and concessions.  The football/soccer field will be a turf field and used by West High alone.  The budget does not include the bleachers that would be placed along the Frisch’s fence.  West High’s Athletic Alumni Association has begun fund raising and will need lots of help to raise the needed $500,000.  Work was to begin in October but has of yet not begun.  West High is scheduled to play football at Taft next year and all baseball games will be away.

FINANCES:  George Williams made the following 4 deposits in the wrestling account:  $790.00, $551.00, $280.39 (10% of football concession profits from Lori) and $140.00.  He requested a check for $987.00 for wresting attire.  The request was so moved, seconded and approved.  Lori requested a check for $1600.67 to pay Pepsi.  The payment of this bill was approved leaving the softball account with a profit of $2803.98 from football concessions.  A check to Lori for $183.00 was also approved.    Coach Oldham started a new tradition of framing the jersey of the football team’s most valuable player.  Lonnie requested a check for $120.00 to frame Seth Anderson’s jersey and his request was approved.  Also approved was a request of $555.00 for 80 long sleeved black mock necks.

Coach Oldham said he had raised thousands of dollars at his previous high school by selling a wide variety of school T-shirts, hats, etc.  Lori said as the senior class advisor she has sold T-shirts and sweatshirts but a school spirit wear/bookstore could be a real moneymaker.  AD Ken Laake had mentioned this idea before so we need to check out his intentions.

WRESTLING:  Coach William’s teams have the following numbers: High school (25), Jr. High (18) and Youth (40).  Several Dual Meets are coming up against North College Hill and Roger Bacon.  Dec. 15th is a home meet and has been designated as meet-the-parents night.  Lori agreed to get the cake and George will buy the punch.  January 19th is Senior Night.

BASKETBALL:  The girls are 1-4 and improving with adjustment to new coach.  The boys are 0-1 with big league games coming up.  On December 10th there will be the 50th Anniversary dedication of the gym.  Members and coaches of the l954 team are being specially invited to the game against Hughes and to share in the celebration.

BOWLING:  The boys have 12 members but the girls need more participants.  The 2 coaches are Coach Taylor and Coach Troescher.  Their first match is December 7th.

Holly Hodge is on the Yearbook Staff and she asked if the Boosters would like to buy an ad in this year’s annual.  We agreed to buy a half page for $90.00.  We need ideas for the design layout.

The next meeting will be Monday, January 3rd at 7:00 in the Dater lunchroom.  This is the first day back from Christmas break so mark it on your calendar.

Happy Holidays!  Come back refreshed with lots of ideas and enthusiasm.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Linnenberg

MEMBERSHIP:  We need to change our membership cards.  Following the agreement from the last meeting that a Patron Member should have a special card to present so they don’t have to pay for parking or entry into a home game, new membership card designs have been developed by George Williams and  John Lusher. Lori Troescher has offered to contact the printer with the new design once they delivered to her.

NEW STADIUM: Western Hills High School continues to state our desire for a varsity football field.  Architects are developing an alternate design to address the recommendations of AD Ken Laake.

Funding remains an issue.  Architects are working on various plans and Ken will keep us informed.

CAMERAS:  The Athletic Department has agreed to purchase cameras in support of the various teams’ needs. This was discussed at our last meeting as a possible Booster purchase.

FUND RAISING:  Vice President Dan Taylor is launching an effort to create season PROGRAMS for the 2004-2005 sports seasons. If you  are interested in helping, providing Contacts at potential advertisers, or are otherwise willing to help, contact Dan (eMail from our WHAB website email link, or find phone numbers that are also available there).

NEW BUSINESS: George Williams suggested at ou last meeting that  the November meeting be organized around a “Meet the Coaches” night for Winter Sports. It was decided that the Meeing would be prepared to be brief, beginning at 6:30p.m., with the “Meet the Coaches” presentation beginning at 7:00p.m. Ken Laake will organize the coaches attendance and refreshments.

The next meeting will be Nov 1st at 7:00 in the Dater lunchroom.

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

September 13, 2004

MEMBERS PRESENT: AD Ken Laake, Assistant AD and Coach Lori Troescher, President John Lusher, Secretary Linda Linnenberg, Coaches Lonnie Oldham, Robby Tucker and George Williams, and members Sherry Hodge, Carla Kerkhoff, John Linnenberg, James Miller, Teresa Miller and Jason Rector.

TREASURY; We are still in need of a Treasurer.  The following amounts were presented for deposit:  $971.00 (football fundraiser), $265.00 (membership dues), $391.00 (wrestling account split-the-pot), and $237.00 (Boosters split-the-pot).  George Williams requested and it was approved to pay a $1039.06 Pepsi bill from concessions.  This accounted for a Pepsi credit of $340.72.  Coach Oldham presented receipts of $625.00 for two video cameras.  The Athletic Department only has one camera and it is frequently in demand by more than one coach.  After some discussion, it was decided to check into whether the Athletic Department could pay for purchasing cameras and necessary tapes.  Lori wrote a check for $79.07 to reimburse the 8 Booster members who attended the August Dinner League Meeting held in Middletown.  Reimbursement had been approved at the June Booster Meeting.

MEMBERSHIP:  We need to change our membership cards.  A Patron Member should have a special card to present so they don’t have to pay for parking or entry into a home game.  George and John Lusher agreed to work on a new card.  It was suggested the 2005 cards have the meeting dates and agenda on the backside.  Lori is continuing to work on getting the teachers and administrators to join.  Ken Laake has ordered long sleeved T-shirts (1/3 maroon, 1/3 white and 1/3 gray) to be sold at games.  A price has yet to be determined.

SPLIT-THE-POT:  Because no one claimed the $118.00 at the McNick game, the Boosters made $237.00.  Wrestlers alone ran the Elder game split-the-pot so the $381.00 profit will go into the Wrestling Account.  No other football game seems profitable, so it was agreed to wait until the basketball season to continue.

NEW STADIUM: Western Hills High School continues to state our desire for a varsity football field.  Taft High School is already the host field for 5 other schools and some schools will have to play on weekdays.  We want to continue the tradition of Friday night games.  Architects are working on various plans and Ken will keep us informed.

VOLLEYBALL:  Coach Tucker said his team is 1 and 2, 1-1 in League play.  To thank Elder for letting the girls practice on their court, the team sent a thank you gift and card to the man who opened the door.  Currently one team member is injured and one is suspended.

FOOTBALL:  Coach Oldham reported their record of 1 and 2.  Eighty-four dressed for the Elder game.  The team is very young and Coach Oldham is very enthusiastic and optimistic about its future.  Coach Oldham and Coach Williams have invited neighborhood Junior High and Youth Football teams to attend future home games.  The teams and their parents are to enter the Ferguson Place Gate by the end of the first quarter.

WRESTLING:  Sign-ups are Oct.21st and Coach Williams hopes to begin study table Oct. 25th.  Coach Williams wants to have a wrestling program that will include rosters, schedules and explanation of referee signals and point awards.  He said the cost would be between $100 and $200 and Ken Laake said the Athletic Department would pay for them.  George is also manning the weight room and said 12 are coming regularly.

http//www.oocities.org/westhighboosters: Don’t forget to use our web site.  Send any sports information to John Lusher and he will add it to our site.

NEW BUSINESS: George Williams suggested we should have a set agenda and make the meetings more meaningful so parents and alums will have a reason for attending.  For instance, before every season have a meet-the-coaches meeting night.  This idea was unanimously agreed upon and we decided to make our November meeting the meet the winter sports coaches.  We also hope to have College Corner Coordinator Deborah Sellers come to give information on ACT and SAT tests, fee waivers, college applications and their deadlines, etc.

There has been some question about athletes attending other sports events free.  Mr. Laake stated each season’s participating athletes will be given a yellow card.  This card gets them into sporting events for that season only.

The Boosters want to express their appreciation to Mrs. Sherry Hodge, Mrs. Teresa Miller, George Williams and all the wrestling parents who helped sell food, T-shirts and split-the-pot tickets at the Elder game.  Thank You!

The next meeting will be Oct. 4th at 7:00 in the Dater lunchroom.  Let’s keep the Boosters growing and invite a friend.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Linnenberg

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

August 9, 2004

MEMBERS PRESENT: AD Ken Laake, Assistant AD and Coach Lori Troescher, President John Lusher, Vice President Dan Taylor, Secretary Linda Linnenberg, Coaches Jim Robb, Mark Taylor and George Williams, parents Sherry and Don Hodge, Karla Kerkoff, John Linnenberg and Susan Lusher, and University School students and athletes (volleyball and softball) Holly and Ginny Hodge.

SUMMARY OF AUGUST 2nd MEETING: AD Ken Laake and 8 West High people went to the Middletown meeting.  Topics such as extensive travel time, athletes (especially girls due to current scheduling) getting home too late on school nights, scheduling problems, and the need for better AD communication were discussed at length.  We were told the schedule for the 2004-2005 school year is set and the commitment to the current league is not one year but three.  Ken Laake and we were given the chance to express our opinions and hopefully our suggestions will be heeded.  Ken stated the ADs will meet August 17th and further discuss the concerns brought up by the approximately 60 people present.

TREASURER:  We are again in need of a treasurer.  Several names were suggested and calls will be made.

MEMBERSHIP:  We need more members and input from them at our monthly meetings.  Lori volunteered to put membership fliers in all the teachers’ boxes at the beginning of the school year. Dan Taylor will get the materials to her so she can do so.  The first home football game is August 27th against McNicholas and this will give us a big opportunity to wear our Booster T-shirts and set up a membership table.  To make the night more festive, we plan to set up Corn Hole games and have plenty of food available at the concessions starting at 6:30.  The Taylors are taking inventory of the T-shirts and at least 48 long sleeved gray Booster T-shirts will be ordered to sell.  Ken Laake further stated he has spoken with all the coaches and has strongly urged their pushing Booster membership to their parents.

CONCESSIONS AND SPLIT-THE-POT: Lori will again be in charge of the football concessions.  Because of the expected crowd turnout for the McNich game, George Williams said he would bring an extra grill.  For the Elder game we expect to have to rent another grill.  The Boosters will have Split-the-Pot for at least the McNich and Elder games.

NEW STADIUM: Ken Lake attended a meeting with Dave Dierker, architects, Mr. Holbrook and some coaches and made the following report.  Western Hills had been allotted $2.3 million for new football, baseball and soccer fields with accompanying improvements to bleachers, press box, and workout facility.  To accomplish this, the architects said it would cost more in the range of $5 million.  Therefore, the architects suggested we build a state of the arts baseball field that would accommodate all the public schools and a smaller football field on the upper practice field that would be large enough for freshmen and reserve games only.  This means varsity football games would be played at Taft.  Everyone present vehemently opposed the proposal.  Taft is already the host field for 5 other schools and varsity football at West High is an established tradition and brings in large gate receipts.  More meetings are planned so we must be vigilant and make sure our views are aired and heeded.  It was noted 45% of the vote for the Cincinnati School Board comes from the West Side so we should use our clout.

SOCCER:  Our new coach Jim Robb is very pleased with the 30 girls who have signed up.  The first game is August 26th.  Joe Bills will coach the boys’ soccer team for which 15 students have turned out.

VOLLEYBALL:  Because the Dater and West High gym floors and being sanded and painted, Elder has graciously allowed our team to practice there.  Approximately 21 girls are regularly showing up for practice.

FOOTBALL:  Ken reported we have 105 uniforms and more than 70 started practice.  He estimated 20 more freshmen might eventually come out.

GOLF:  Credit has been arranged at Neuman Golf Course and Steve Richardson is coaching the team.

BOWLING:  Dan Taylor reported West High will be the only public school with a team so we will play a non-league schedule.  There will be 8 members on the team and they will play 3 matches a week.  Western Bowl has offered to host the matches, charging no fees.

Because of Labor Day, the next Booster meeting will be September 13th at 7:00pm in the Dater lunchroom.  Encourage friends and new members to come.

Note:  The first football game is very important.  Please remember if you volunteered to work the concession stand, to man the membership table, or to sell split-the-pot tickets.  Wear your T-shirts and show up at 6:00 ready to spread the spirit.

Respectfully submitted;

Linda Linnenberg

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

May 3, 2004

MEMBERS PRESENT: Assistant AD and Coach Lori Troescher, President John Lusher, Treasurer Don Ulmer, Secretary Linda Linnenberg, Coach George Williams, and parents Sherry and Don Hodge, Karla Kerkhoff, John Linnenberg and Susan Lusher.

The Minutes were approved as read.

FINANCES: Lori stated the bill for the Mustang Decals has not been paid.  John Linnenberg moved and Susan Lusher seconded that the Boosters pay up to $300.00 for the decals.  The motion was passed.  Lori also reported unused Pepsi is still in the AD’s office and we are waiting on a pickup and credit statement before paying the final bill.  Note:  The next day Lori notified me she forgot to mention at the meeting that she will be depositing in the softball account money made from a spring fund-raiser.

SPORTS OPEN HOUSE: The date has been set for May 26th from 2:30-5:00 in the West High Lunchroom.  Ten sports will be represented with many coaches present.  This is a very important meeting as summer schedules will be distributed and students and parents can ask questions of the coaches.  The Boosters plan to man a table and Linda volunteered to pass out membership information.  Susan Lusher will talk to Ken Laake and finalize information for fliers and posters to be sent to the neighboring elementary schools.  Lori will talk to Ken about putting the information on the CPS Website.

CONCESSIONS: Because of the numerous baseball rainouts including the Best of the West, there were no baseball concessions.  As the Booster participation has not improved enough to run the concessions for next year, once again Lori agreed to be in charge of the football concessions and George Williams agreed to run the basketball concessions.

BASEBALL: Coach Ulmer reported the team is 10-9 but 9-1 in the League.  If they beat Mt. Healthy on May 5th (Note: they won) they will win the League.  The JV was undefeated in the League.  The first tournament game is May 10th against Northwest at Fairfield.

SOFTBALL: The team has had 18 rainouts, but of their 10 games, they have won 5.  Of the 8 League makeup games, 6 are against Dayton teams.  Because of this, League games will need to be continued after the first Tournament game May 10th against Loveland at Lakota East.

WRESTLING: Coach Williams stated that all 6 in his Greco Freestyle Club qualified for State.  They will wrestle May 22nd at Wadsworth High School.

GOLF:  Only one person signed up for Summer League.  We need to do a better job of promoting this League next year because clubs, lessons and playing time are all offered free to those under 18 who sign up.  We will try to find people to donate clubs or golf expenses for our team.

BANQUETS: The Spring Sports Banquet is May 19th at 6:00 in the 4th Floor Lunchroom.  Scholar Athlete Patches will also be awarded to all athletes throughout the year who obtained a 3.0 GPA.  Sheila Brown will represent West High at the Price Hill Old Timers Hall of Fame Dinner May 5th.

NEW BUSINESS: A long discussion was held on the value and practically of West High’s being in a league with Dayton teams.  Traveling to and from Dayton is a long 3-hour bus ride getting the athletes home often very late at night.  Because of the distance, very few fans travel either way.  The stands are practically empty which affect gate and concession income, not to mention the expense of the buses.  Week games adversely affect academics that should be our priority.  While coaches have already written letters of complaint, the Boosters are encouraging parents to write letters expressing their opinion to the School Board and Superintendent Frailey.  As an organization, the Boosters also plan to send a letter that we will show to AD Laake first.

Don Ulmer reported he, Mr. Holbrook, Officer Robb, Lonnie Oldham, and Lori recently went to an architect’s meeting to discuss the 2.3 million dollar sports complex to be built across from West High.  The master plan is for 3 major athletic complexes with the Cincinnati Public Schools sharing them.  Walnut Hills H.S. will have football and soccer, Taft H.S. will have football and track, and West High will have football and baseball.  Field dimensions, turf, etc. were discussed, and it seems that a lot more planning and number crunching need to take place before these facilities become a reality.

George Williams said he thinks the Boosters should provide buses for the students who want to attend tournament games.  He stated we should promote the tournaments and encourage athletes to go watch other athletes play.  It was suggested to have each student prepay $5 to reserve a seat and then have the $5 reimbursed when they show up.  We will remember this idea for next year.

Dan Taylor’s father died and Susan Lusher sent a $40 flower arrangement from the Boosters.  Reimbursement was approved.

Next meeting will be August 2, 2004 at 7:00.  Have a wonderful summer!

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Linnenberg

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

April 12, 2004

MEMBERS PRESENT: AD Ken Laake, Assistant AD and Coach Lori Troescher, Secretary Linda Linnenberg, Coach George Williams, and parents Linda Garvey, Sherry Hodge, John Linnenberg, and Susan Lusher.

MARCH 1 MINUTES: The minutes were approved with the following additions and correction:

1.       Previously unused money from the William R. Alexander Scholarship will be given in the amount of $500 to Collier Smith who is now attending Cincinnati State in the Fire Fighting Program;

2.       Of the 42 initial baseball tryouts, only 4 of the freshmen were from Dater.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Although unable to attend the meeting, Don Ulmer has agreed to serve as Treasurer.  Ken Laake will handle the necessary signature card changes.  Lori submitted 2 deposits of $25.00 (membership fees) and $70.00 (Entertainment Books).  There was a $340.72 bill from Pepsi but we are waiting for amount of credit before payment.  A$158.96 bill for 4 adult jackets for the football chain gang was submitted.  We had previously approved $100 for these jackets, but there were additional costs for 2 extra large jackets and the embroidery work.  Lori suggested that in the future embroidery expenses could be negotiated or even free.  It was moved and passed we pay the additional expense.  Just 3 Women catered the Baseball-Softball Meet-the-Parents event.  The bill came to $480.00 of which  $152.00 will come out of the baseball account, $88.00 will come out of the softball account, and the Boosters will pay for the drinks and dessert as previously agreed. ($240.00).  Lori asked to be reimbursed for 2 coaches who attended a softball clinic in February.  It was moved, seconded and passed to reimburse Lori the $40.00 per coach fee.  $480.00 was taken out of the wrestling account to pay for a recent Oak Hills Camp for which 7 members of the Greco Free Style Wrestling Club attended.

WRESTLING: Coach Williams said the Westside Wrestling Club is very active.  On May 15th 7 West High and 2 Jr., High students will go to State.  Another tournament will be held in August.  As the wrestling mats will be taken up for another summer of swimming lessons, the wrestlers will be practicing at Oak Hills High School.  George is again planning several fun summer activities for anyone interested.  In June he is setting up a day of rock climbing and in July he is inviting people to his home for a picnic and swimming.  More information to come.

SOFTBALL: The varsity is 3-1 but more importantly 3-0 in the League.  They have had 11 rainouts to date.

BASEBALL: The varsity record is 4-4.

TRACK: The boys have a full team and are doing well under new Coach Byrd.  Under new Coach Peoples, the girls are doing well in the positions covered.

AD REPORT: Ken Laake said 6 boys initially came out for tennis but only 1 returned. A tennis club is being considered for both boys and girls.  We are waiting on approval of recommended soccer coaches.  A new boys’ golf coach is being sought.  A bowling team is in the works for next year.  The Winter Sports Banquet is set for April 16th.  We plan to continue inviting PeeWee Leagues to come to the home football games.  Once again, we will feature and introduce teams and anyone wearing a jersey, hat, etc. from that team will get in free.  George Williams agreed to run and organize the program.

SPORTS OPEN HOUSE: We will again set aside an afternoon to introduce all fall sports coaches and distribute their summer practice schedules.  Susan Lusher volunteered to take posters to neighboring elementary schools so 8th graders will know to come and learn about athletic opportunities.  A date will be set at our May meeting.

FUND RAISING: The sale of bricks for the new stadium was again discussed.  Maybe we can coordinate efforts with the Annual Staff, which has been selling bricks for a “Memory Walk” in front of the school for 2 years.  Note:  See article from the April, 2004 Western Hills High School Alumni News at the end of the Minutes.

NEW BUSINESS: Susan Lusher brought up the fact that it is expensive to be on the golf team.  Each practice costs $10.00 and a bucket of balls costs $6.00.  Because of the expenses, practices are limited and skills cannot be properly worked on.  She asked for Booster help or any other suggestions.  George Williams asked that all coaches put the information for their sport on the West High Booster web site.

The next Booster meeting will be Monday May 3rd.  Mark your calendar!

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Linnenberg

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

March 1, 2004

MEMBERS PRESENT: AD Ken Laake, Assistant AD and Coach Lori Troescher, President John Lusher, Vice President Dan Taylor, Secretary Linda Linnenberg; Coaches Dave Smith, Mark Taylor, Joseph Tharp, Don Ulmer, and George Williams; Parents Sherry Hodge, Carla Kerkhoff and John Linnenberg.

The minutes were approved as read.  There was no Treasurer’s Report.  President Lusher read a January bank statement showing the Boosters with $13,391,61 in a checking account and a CD worth $12,661,28.  Don Ulmer submitted 3 bills in the amounts of $1162.05, $981.57, and $900.00 for items such as JUGS and pitching machine repairs, uniforms, Best of West T-shirts, Banquet, etc.  As the Baseball Account has $8294.71 in the Booster account, the bill payments were approved.  A $2115 Pepsi bill was paid.  A $110 check was sent for Entertainment Books.

FINANCES:  A lengthy discussion was held on the Booster finances as our treasury is composed almost entirely of moneys raised by and earmarked for baseball, softball and wrestling.  The other sports have made no attempts to raise money and memberships have brought in a minimal amount.  It was stated other sports ask for money (example: football team visit to the Bengal’s training camp in Georgetown) but when the softball team went to Camp Joy for an overnight, they were expected to use the money they had worked hard to raise.  It was generally agreed each team should get an amount of “boosting” over and above funds raised and we as a group should come up with better ways to increase membership and increase our treasury.  It was suggested we might consider combining with AWHAA and dissolve our charter, but it was explained we need the Boosters to earmark funds raised or we would always have to get permission from downtown for any spending.

FUND RAISING: Don Ulmer is considering a Best of West Program for the early May tournament.  He said he would get the rosters of the 8 competing teams and Mr. Tharp said he would look into advertising and printing.  Football programs are a big money maker, and we are looking into selling ads over the summer.  Each team member would be expected to sell a required amount of ads.  As a club, we definitely need to increase membership.  Membership applications should be sent with the August information mailings, and we should have representatives at all school orientations.  We also need more coaches like George Williams who has each team member’s family join the Boosters.  We discussed fun get-togethers such as grill outs and dances.

CONCESSIONS:  George reported the basketball concessions grossed $4081.70.  He is waiting for the Pepsi bill.  Another cooler is needed but Lori stated there are two in the football concession stand that will be torn down after the season.  They can be brought across the street then.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Coach Tharp reported the team was very young and half are going to play on AAU teams.  He said they had a 2nd Team All League and a 3rd Team Honorable Mention.  He is reviving a summer league with Withrow and Clark Montessori.

WRESTLING: Coach Williams said they were 4th out of 12 at League with three 2nds, four 3rds, and 2 4ths.  At Sectionals they were 7th out of 12.  One alternate went to District.  The Youth Program qualified 6 or 7 for State.  The Jr. High team has 9 kids with good potential.  The wrestling team placed more kids this year than ever before and George is very optimistic about the future of his young team.  The summer program will start soon.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL: The boys were second in the League and 2 players were District Honorable Mention. They play Lakota East March 3rd, 7:00pm at U.C.

BASEBALL: Coach Ulmer stated a total of 42 have tried out to date, with only 4 from Dater.  He hopes to increase this number.  Don believes we should win League. The first game is March 22 against Mason, but the first home game is March 26th against Wilmington H.S.

SOFTBALL: Coach Troescher said the team is very young with only 3 returning Varsity players, none starters. Of the 25 member team only 4 are seniors.  The first game is March 22 against Lockland, and the first home game is March 24 against St. Henry.  The Meet-the-Parents get-together for baseball and softball will be the week of March 15th.  It was agreed the Boosters would be responsible for the cake and drink expenses.

AD REPORT: Track numbers are good and practices have begun.  Officer Jim Robb has been hired as the girls’ soccer coach.  He has 12 years experience as a coach at Seton and will be working with 8th to 11th graders.  Mr. Laake is still interviewing for the boys’ soccer coach position.  A date for the Winter Sports Banquet has yet to be determined.  We briefly discussed the traditional May meeting to explain fall sports, summer schedules, etc.  More specifics will be forthcoming at our April meeting.

Because of Spring Break, our next meeting will be Monday April 12th.  Mark your calendar!

WESTERN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING

January 5, 2004

MEMBERS PRESENT: AD Ken Laake, President John Lusher, Vice President Dan Taylor, Secretary Linda Linnenberg, Coaches Lori Troescher and George Williams, and parents Sherry and Don Hodge, Carla Kerkoff, John Linnenberg, and Susan Lusher.

The Minutes were accepted as read.  There was no Treasurer’s Report.

Lori presented deposit slips of $235.00, $15.00, and $315.00 (Entertainment Books).  $1,395.71 was paid to Pepsi out of concession moneys leaving a profit from football concessions of $3,096.06.  Out of this amount, softball gets 80% ($2,476.86) and the Boosters and Wrestling each get 10% ($309.60).

MEMBERSHIP: The membership cards are to be available Jan. 6 and the decals are in now.  Ken showed us the long-sleeved gray “I Back the Mustangs” T-shirts.  John and Dan will go through the new member applications and see if we can start getting these members involved.  The early Meet-the-Parents Nights have been successful.  The Cheerleader parents will be introduced at the Jan. 9th basketball game.  In discussions, we decided to continue the early Meet-the-Parents nights for the fall and winter sports.  Softball and baseball, however, will continue their already established and successful pre scrimmage get-togethers.  Possibly boys’ tennis, girls’ golf and the track teams might have something together.

In order to inform old and new members, it was decided to post the minutes on the Booster web site.

CONCESSIONS: John Lusher suggested the Boosters take over more of the concession work.  It was decided since the softball and wrestling teams do such an excellent job, we, at least for this year, should concentrate on split-the-pot, basketball shoot-outs, and parking.  It was noted profit from the pop machines goes to the Athletic Department.  Baseball parents have run the baseball concessions in the past and we need to look into what the practice will be this year.  It was noted that baseball concessions have not contributed 10% of their profits to the Boosters.

FUNDRAISING: We discussed various candy and Buddy Card fund raisers.  In order not to compete with already existing team fund-raisers, John Lusher suggested forming a committee to look into ideas.

WEB SITE: http://www.oocities.org/westhighboosters/

John Lusher and Rick Kerkhoff have worked hard to set up an informative web site.  It has everything from team schedules to maps to games to information on the Mustang Hall of Honor.  John asked Ken to tell the coaches to send any information they want posted.  At present Ken updates schedules and scores on highschoolsports.net.  It was suggested we make a banner of our new web site and hang it in the gym.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL: They are 5 and 1 and upset Columbus Brookhaven 68-67 in the Christmas Tournament.  Brookhaven won State two years ago, was runner-up last year and was currently ranked 4th in the state.  The JV are also 5-1 losing only to Moeller.  Both the teams and their coaches are doing an excellent job.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Varsity is 1-4 but working hard under Rick Tharpe and his excellent staff.

WRESTLING:  Four of the 6 wrestlers placed at the Amelia Meet.  The JV came in 4th out of 9 at the Hughes Meet.  They came in 7th out of 11 at the Norwood Meet.  The Sycamore Invitational is Jan.6.

The Junior High Team (10 7th graders) will compete against Roger Bacon.  The Youth Program comprised of 20 wrestlers will compete against Sycamore and Lakota.  Coach Williams also turned over $980 from Basketball concessions to be deposited.

AD REPORT: Openings have been posted for both boys and girls soccer coaches and head football coach.  Ken has received 82 resumes for the football position.

The drill team is doing an excellent job and he intends to start a pep club next year.

Ground breaking will begin Oct. 2004 for the new 2-story building that will include coaches’ offices, locker rooms, etc.  Because of the construction, the boys’ baseball games will be moved for spring ’05.

Supposedly football is on target for ’05.  We may need to do some fundraising over and above the 2.4 million coming from the bond levy.  We discussed commemorative bricks and Pillars of the Community contributions.

Feb. 4th is the dinner to induct new members of the Hall of Honor.  Russ Nixon will be the speaker and the ticket price is $55.00.  We are very proud of Lori Troescher who will be inducted that night.

An ad was purchased in the Community Press congratulating Elder on winning the state football championship.

Trevor Canfield has not committed to a college as yet.  We will plan a signing celebration when he does.

The next meeting will be Monday, Feb. 2, 2004.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Linnenberg.
