ANDROSTENEDIOL

Androstenediol (4-AD) is a natural occurring androgen metabolite, found in all animals (meat), and is both a direct precursor and metabolite to testosterone. It is a very obscure compound that is not widely discussed in the literature like other androgens are. In all mammals, 4AD is produced in the gonads and adrenal glands. The oral form of 4AD is metabolized in the liver to become testosterone via an enzymatic pathway.

There is a tremendous potential value of Androstenediol (4-AD) as a bodybuilding supplement for two major reasons. First of all, it converts to testosterone via an entirely different enzyme (3-beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) than androstenedione. Secondly, the conversion appears to be much more efficient than that of androstenedione, perhaps up to three times greater.*

Those taking Androstenediol for a generally improved state of well-being or recuperation from exercise, can take 100-200 mg a day in divided doses. Doses for intensely-training athletes range from 200-400mg a day in divided doses. Because Androdiol and Androstene are converted along entirely different enzymatic pathways, those using both products together would achieve optimal results. DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone)

(I know this is long, but i copied and pasted it all over here so you could get all the info instead of half. I am not responsible for eye damage hehe ;) )

People are living longer than ever before, but if you think you're lucky to be part of this trend, think again. Our longevity is coming to us at tremendous cost in the form of an ever-increasing incidence of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, and other chronic degenerative diseases commonly associated with aging. This is bad news indeed, especially when you stop to consider that there is no built-in mechanism that causes our bodies to start falling apart at a given age. In fact, there is compelling evidence to suggest that our rather sad health picture is due largely to environmental factors. Worse yet, these factors can be linked to chronic health problems not just among the elderly, but younger people as well. You can, however, take steps to keep yourself out of this grim scenario. And your most powerful weapon is a special product that boosts your body's levels of something called DHEA. A strong and growing body of scientific evidence points to DHEA as the single most important factor in our health. To understand how this is possible, we need to take a closer look at DHEA.

Understanding DHEA

DHEA (short for dehydroepiandrosterone) is a prohormone. It is known as the "mother hormone" because all hormones in the human body cascade down from it. Most people associate the word "hormones" with sex. But hormones are the regulators of the body, and their role in our physiology goes far beyond sexual reproduction. When they are out of balance or become depleted, our bodies gradually lose the ability to function properly. It is therefore important to understand the key role DHEA plays not only in the human hormonal system, but in longevity and our overall quality of life.

DHEA is the most abundant hormone in the human bloodstream. Our bodies naturally produce DHEA, but by the age of 25 the level of DHEA production starts a decline that continues until we die. It is the only hormone which declines in this linear fashion, but the disturbing fact is that the health consequences of a DHEA deficiency are not limited to the elderly. And what are those consequences?

Years of medical research have shown that there is an association between declining DHEA levels and the onset of chronic degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, and osteoporosis. Low DHEA levels have also been linked to immune system deficiencies, chronic fatigue syndrome, premenstrual syndrome, menopausal disorders, fertility problems, diabetes, and other chronic health problems. DHEA also seems to have a significant effect on weight loss and the building of lean muscle mass.

While the full extent of DHEA's function in the human body is not yet known (for example, recent research has indicated that the body actually has DHEA receptors, suggesting a significance beyond its role as a prohormone), one thing is clear - medical evidence increasingly supports the view that DHEA may be the single most important factor in our health.

Natural vs. Synthetic

The excitement over DHEA continues to grow because the DHEA research holds truly staggering implications for its use in reversing, and even PREVENTING a wide range of health problems. But how can we boost the body's levels of DHEA? Until recently, DHEA has been available only in synthetic form. Back in the 1950s when the hormone-precursor properties of plant sterols were discovered, the pharmaceutical companies experimented with their use. But what they found is that the natural precursors don't survive the first-pass metabolic process in the liver. Their solution was to slightly alter the molecules in the natural sterols. This allowed them to come up with substances that would make it into the body in sufficient quantities to have a therapeutic effect (and also gave them something which could be patented). The down side is that these substances are not natural, and have many insidious side effects, especially after long term use, synthetic DHEA included. The only alternative to synthetic DHEA would be a natural precursor, and one was discovered in the early 1950s. This substance is called diosgenin, and the most potent source was found to be a species of Costa Rican wild yam.

Precursors have three big advantages over synthetics. First, a precursor is a natural substance which the body converts into something it needs. A good example is beta carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. Therefore diosgenin is to DHEA what beta carotene is to vitamin A. The second is that the body can properly utilize the precursor, and without side effects, even after long-term use. The third advantage is that the body recognizes the precursor as a natural substance, and excretes what it doesn't need - in other words, you can't overdose. But what about the fact that natural precursors are easily destroyed by the metabolic process before they can be adequately absorbed by your body? An effective solution to this problem eluded researchers and formulators until recently, when a revolutionary new delivery system was developed.

This delivery system is proprietary, and has been incorporated into a DHEA precursor formulation developed exclusively for a company called NTT. NTT's product is currently available under the name of Super-Plus TM"Physician's Formula". Fad or Future?

Good nutrition is more and more on people's minds these days. It seems like the news is full of stories about so-called nutrition "breakthroughs" involving some "herb of the week". Most of the time these stories are based on unsubstantiated claims, and they typify the faddish nature of a trendy approach to nutrition. Because DHEA has been the focus of so much research for many years it is clearly not a fad, but instead has been established as a true breakthrough in advancing better health through a scientific approach to nutrition. And with the discovery of a highly effective delivery system for its natural precursor, DHEA has a definite place in the present - and future.

IMPORTANT facts about DHEA

As you may know, DHEA has become a hot topic in health. Increased public awareness has led to growing demand for DHEA products. Many such products are now on the market, and more are being added every day. There is unfortunately a lot of confusion and misinformation concerning DHEA and DHEA products - a situation that is certainly not helped by the many companies attempting to cash in on the public's excitement over DHEA. This article will give you some very important information that will help you sort through the blizzard of DHEA products available. This information is vital for you, the consumer to make the best choices for your health. PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO IS CURRENTLY TAKING A DHEA PRODUCT, OR IS THINKING ABOUT DOING SO.

INTRODUCTION: WHAT ARE OUR CHOICES?

If you're interesting in taking a DHEA product, there are only two choices available. One is to take a synthetic version of DHEA (synthetic DHEA is in fact a steroid drug). The other is to take a product which contains a natural precursor to DHEA. It is VERY IMPORTANT to distinguish between the two types of DHEA products, and many people apparently do not understand the distinction - it is here that the consumer is most vulnerable.

DHEA SIDE EFFECTS

To understand the significance of the differences between synthetic and natural DHEA, we first need to know what the side effects of synthetic DHEA are. When we refer to side effects, please remember that these are characteristic ONLY OF SYNTHETIC DHEA - THERE ARE NO SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE NATURAL DHEA IN OUR BODIES. The side effects of synthetic DHEA include:

For women, cervical dysplasia and endometriosis; for men, increased risk of prostate problems including prostate cancer; for men and women, increased risk of breast and brain tumors, depression, increased arthritis pain, alteration of pituitary chemistry, and interference with proper thyroid function. Also, because synthetic DHEA is not recognized properly by the body, it stores and accumulates over time. This is why long-term use of synthetic DHEA carries the greatest risks. Given the fact that synthetic DHEA is actually not very effective in raising DHEA levels, then its use must be seen as unjustified in view of the possible consequences. DHEA PRODUCTS Now that we've laid out the situation concerning synthetic DHEA, you need to be aware of what to watch out for when looking at DHEA products. The vital question for you to ask is "does this product contain synthetic DHEA?" Up until fairly recently, the only way to get synthetic DHEA was through a doctor's prescription. That, however, has changed and the sad truth is many people are buying synthetic DHEA products over-the-counter and are either not aware of it, or don't understand why their choice of product could be so dangerous. Worse yet, some companies are marketing synthetic DHEA products as "natural". However, these hazards can be avoided if you know what to look for. How do you know whether or not a product has synthetic DHEA? The first place to look is in the product description. If a product is said to be DHEA, then it certainly is the synthetic version. If however, the labeling lists a plant extract ingredient (wild yam is typical), and the product is clearly described as a DHEA precursor, then it is not a synthetic DHEA product. But understand the importance of the word PRECURSOR - without it a DHEA product should be suspect. Another item that raises the red flag is if the product carries warnings for people with certain medical conditions. This is the kind of thing associated with prescription drugs, and if it appears in the product information, then there is very good reason to be suspicious that the product does contain synthetic DHEA - regardless of whether or not it is being represented as "natural". The truth is that natural precursors are very safe, and there is no reason why anyone shouldn't take them.

DHEA PRECURSORS

Although the body produces natural DHEA on its own, the levels decline over time and are impacted by environmental factors. Declining DHEA levels have been linked to a wide variety of chronic degenerative diseases, and low levels of DHEA are associated with numerous health problems found in young and old alike. Because of the serious risks involved with synthetic DHEA, the only safe way of gaining the therapeutic benefits of DHEA would be through natural DHEA alone. This means that our only real choice is to use a natural DHEA precursor product.

What is a precursor? It is simply a natural substance the body converts into something it needs. A good example is beta carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. For DHEA, the precursor is a naturally occurring substance called diosgenin. Diosgenin is found in a wide variety of plants, but the most potent source is a species of wild yam found in central America. The big difference between a natural precursor and its synthetic equivalent is that the precursor is converted through normal metabolic functions and the by-products are sooner or later excreted from the body. And if you take in more than your body needs, the excess is excreted out - in other words, you can't overdose. This is a major contrast with synthetics, where residues store and build up in the body, reaching levels of toxicity.

As much promise as there is with natural precursors, there is also a problem - they are largely destroyed through a rapid and destructive process called first-pass metabolism. This process takes place in the liver, and it is a problem that renders all nutritional products ineffective, except for one product that has defeated the whole first-pass problem. That product is an all-natural DHEA precursor called Super-Plus. Developed by NTT, Inc., what makes Super-Plus so powerful is a totally unique, patented branched-chain amino acid delivery system that bypasses the liver and puts the active ingredients directly into the bloodstream through the skeletal muscles, where the active ingredients are available to the body for immediate use. Super-Plus is THE ONLY PRODUCT ON THE MARKET THAT CAN SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY BOOST YOUR BODY'S LEVELS OF NATURAL DHEA.

CREATINE MONOHYDRATE

Creatine Monohydrate provides safe nutritional support for athletes seeking peak performance in short-duration, high-intensity efforts. By supporting the body's natural ability to regenerate the primary energy immediately available to working muscle, Creatine Monohydrate has the potential to increase optimal work output in activities such as weight-lifting and sprinting.

Creatine Monohydrate was first introduced to the bodybuilding world back in 1993 by Anthony Almada and Ed Byrd; Two research scientists behind a company called Experimental and Applied Sciences (EAS); Muscle Media 2000 was the first magazine to write about the potential of Creatine Monohydrate as a bodybuilding supplement.

In the numerous studies done on Creatine, the only reported side effect is an increase in lean muscle mass which varies per individuals. The latest theory on how Creatine Monohydrate increases size and muscle strength is by getting in your bloodstream & your muscles kind of "soaking it up". Scientists in Europe discovered using high amounts of Creatine for 5-7 days (loading up), dramatically increased peak-power output of test subjects & also caused significant weight gain. Anthony Almada & other researchers from the US went on to demonstrate that the weight gain associated with Creatine use is lean mass (fat-free weight).

Beef & Creatine

Creatine is found in a variety of foods in various concentrations. Lean meat is one of the richest sources of Creatine (2.2 lbs. of steak contains approx. 5 grams of Creatine). In fact, Creatine is found in the body and is one of the muscle's energy sources. Creatine acts as a reserved source of energy and is used by the body in times of MAXIMAL EFFORT.

Studies suggest that 3 grams of Creatine each day is sufficient to load and maintain Creatine in the muscle, though individual needs vary. However, taking a very large dose is not the answer as per the higher the blood Creatine levels, the lower the uptake of Creatine by the muscles.

CHROMIUM PICOLINATE

I don't have much information on this for the moment. This is the suppliment I take.

It supplies Chromium, an essential nutrient required for normal protien, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism. Dynamic Chromium Picolinate contains the highest quality Chromium Pictolinate available.

This is an over the counter suppliment. You can usually find it at drug stores and grocery stores. The bottles usually contain 90 pills (3 month supply) and can cost as little as $7.00 a bottle. If you want to find out more (which I think you should hehe) go to the Weider Homepage.
