"The lighthouse overlooking the Atlantic Highlands once guided mariners home with its powerful beams. Tom McCormack, a singer and songwriter who lives nearby along the windswept coast, also helps people find their way through rough waters."
"I've been writing songs since I was 11 years old," he said. "My music, my own songs, clued me in to what was going on inside of me. I didn't come out as a gay man until I was 25, but I felt that my music was always trying to tell me something. Eventually, the songs I was writing called me around to the truth about myself."
"Much of McCormack's music emphasizes the importance of being out and honest in life. When asked about the recent hoopla over openly gay and lesbian celebrities, McCormack says, "I think it's the same ol' 'coming out is frigtening, awkward.'... and it can sometimes feel like it brings you attention for something you really don't want to be known for (rather than the attention you should get as an artist)." The bottom line, however, for McCormack is "everyone should come out when they're ready. I understand the fear of its effect on your career, but the tradeoff is -- in my opinion -- worth the risk."
"I'm not a preacher and I'm not a Scripture-quoting Bible thumper, but I am someone whose spirituality has informed all of my life and it's probably the deepest part of me....It's where my music comes from."
