is
for Leather. The intense spirit of camaraderie among leathermen
is expressed in one of the house organs of the leather movement, Dungeon
Master. In 1981, the magazine announced in all seriousness the
establishment of an emergency relief fund for the S/M victims of a devastating
firestorm that had swept through San Francisco's South-of-Market district,
reducing well-appointed playrooms to rubble, incinerating irreplaceable
collections of historic whips, and melting down whole teasure troves of
marital aids and dildoes. Rather than asking them to send money, the author
urged readers to scour their own dungeons and rifle through their toy chests
for harnesses "you never use, your duplicates, the things you've outgrown,"
box them up in Care packages, and send them off to an S/M group in San
Francisco that, like the Red Cross or the Save the Children Fund, would
make certain "they are forwarded to the men in need."
