The Maidens on the Unicorns

The moonlight shone silver on the ruin in the clearing
An ancient monk’s chapel now in disrepair
The forest was quiet; the woods were a-sleeping
Not a thing did disturb the stone blocks scattered there.

When just then appeared two riders on horseback
No, look once again, the horses have horns--
Stepping out of a legend and into the clearing
Were two fair young maidens riding unicorns.

They were smiling as brightly as the sunshine in morning
In flowing white gowns, with hair of spun gold,
Adorned with bright garlands of colourful flowers
Their eyes were a-laughing with secrets untold.

Their presence brought colour to the ruin in moonlight
The sound of their laughter was music to hear
Then as if summoned from the dark of the forest
The woodland creatures appeared and drew near.

Leading their mounts to the ruin in the clearing
The maidens stopped briefly to sing to the throng
The music conveyed a sweet understanding
The animals learned from the fair maidens’ song.

They were smiling as brightly as the sunshine in morning
In flowing white gowns, with hair of spun gold,
Adorned with bright garlands of colourful flowers
Their eyes were a-laughing with secrets untold.

The animals listened, and with rapt attention
As the maidens kept singing, and they understood
Then their mounts started moving, and the maidens went onward
And the creatures returned to their homes in the wood.

The moonlight shone silver on the ruin in the clearing
An ancient monk’s chapel still in disrepair
The forest now quiet; the woods again sleeping
Not a thing to reveal the tales once sung there.

They were smiling as brightly as the sunshine in morning
In flowing white gowns, with hair of spun gold,
Adorned with bright garlands of colourful flowers
Their eyes were a-laughing with secrets untold.

They say that there are two riders on horseback
But if you look once again, the horses have horns--
They appear in the clearing, and sing for the animals
The two fair young maidens who ride unicorns.

They say if you go by that old ruin in the clearing
And a small forest creature comes out from the thorns
If you’re still and quiet, you might hear the song of
The two fair young maidens who ride unicorns.

They’ll be smiling as brightly as the sunshine in morning
In flowing white gowns, with hair of spun gold,
Adorned with bright garlands of colourful flowers
Their eyes will be laughing with secrets untold.

A Little Background

This poem was inspired by a friend's dream. I loved the images she told me of, and I tried to do justice to them in my poem.

But as I was writing it, I had a tune rolling through my head; and without knowing it, I was writing the poem as if it was a lyric for that tune. When I realized what I was doing, I went back and made a few small revisions so that it could be sung.

To sing it, use the tune of "Rose of Tralee," and treat the "They were smiling as brightly" verse as the refrain. Have fun!
