09 Apr 2001 - BBC Website.

Rajesh Mirchandani took a trip backstage at one of Westlife's gigs recently, and spoke to Nicky and Mark from the band - taking care not to wake the sleeping Kian!

The band were in Sheffield in on a mammoth tour, and Rajesh was keen to find out how the lads motivate themselves: "How do you go out and give the best show ever? How is one night different from another?"
Mark: "It might sound a little bit bad, but I think one thing that definately gives us a kick up the backside is every now and again you do get a show that just plummets in the level of enjoyment and the level of satisfaction you get from it - but that really gives you a kick for the next two weeks. It's like starting off with a fresh start."

So how do they always maintain that freshness? "It is always nice when you start off in a new city, or a new venue because becoming repetitive or monotonus... that can happen" says Nicky. "I think what goes through your head is that because you're doing say, 4 or 5 nights in the one city, by the time you reach the third or fourth night you almost feel like the people have seen that already - although they haven't - it's a different set of people. But cos you've done the exact same thing, for the last three or four nights it somehow seems that they're not enjoying it."

That is the trials of going on tour, which can lead to tension - Rajesh asks them if they've ever let it all out! "I've read about artists, because they're so stressed by having to do a tour that's so long and so stressful if something isn't quite right, they snap. Are you like that?"

Cue Mark: "I think definately sometimes, just like every other person in every other job would do you know, some of us flip every now and again."

"So you don't request that your dressing room be decked out in this blue and white?"

"Your dressing room is your zone where you go to chill out and prepare yourself mentally for the gig. Whether that's done by sitting down, playing Playstation, listening to music, having a snooze, whatever - the atmosphere in the dressing room has to be pretty cool" says Mark, rather defensively!

So Rajesh gets Nicky to give us a guided tour of the dressing room! "Well, i think the best way of describing it is a mess! We've got a couch which Kian is lying on, we've got our robes there. We do a runner after every show - we come off after the last song, our costumes come off and we're straight onto our bus and we're gone - and we're usually in our hotel within 15 minutes after we've stepped off stage." Magic!

Rajesh rounds things off by asking what people can expect from a live Westlife show: "For a lot of people who've not seen Westlife on tour - who are fans through the albums or singles, they know you for a lot of ballads. What do you do on stage to maintain the atmosphere and the energy because if you're doing ballads a lot, it's going to come down?"
Nicky: "The show actually flows really well. We were aware that people thought we were a ballad band - y'know we're not N-Sync, we're not professional dancers, or anything like that, but when you go to put a live show on, you can't sit on stools for 18 songs. So we sat down, took the two up tempo songs from the two albums that we have, we put in a Motown medley, and the show flows particularly well."

Here Westlife answer questions put to them by the fans!

When you go clubbing do you have to take bodyguards with you?? From Sue Stevens
We're really busy at the moment, we feel like we haven't had a night out for such a long time. We work too hard! It really depends where we are going but sometimes yeah we do need some people looking out for us. We generally know the right places to go so we can usually relax and have a good time.

Are you all single?? By Petova
Mark - Myself, Kian and Shane are single. Bryan is with Kerry from Atomic Kitten and Nicky with Georgina (Irish Presidents daughter). I am however open to offers! My ideal woman would have to be kind, thoughtful with a great sense of humour. Anyone one out there??! (i'm here Mark!!)

Congratulations Brian for becoming a soon to be daddy! Will this affect life with Westlife? By Sam
Bryan - Thank you so much. I'm thrilled, it's the best thing that has ever happened to me! It won't affect life with the rest of the band though. I'm still going to do the US tour later on this year, around the time that Kerry is due to give birth. I'm not leaving the band - you're definitely not getting rid of me that easily!

I have loads of collections eg. beanie babies. So I was just wondering if any of you have any weird collections, if so what are they and why did you decide to start collecting them? From Emily.
Shane - I don't actually have any weird collections which is quite boring to say, wish I did though! One thing I do collect is stamps on my passport because we travel loads but that isn't very weird or exciting at all!

On the album of' coast to coast' inside where you say thank you's it says on yours 'I love you sweetheart' to Kerry but what does the 8.3.1. mean after it??? By Your greatest fan Emma
Bryan - It in fact means '8 letters, 3 words, 1 meaning..' (I Love You).awwwwww!!!

What are your favourite colours? And, what are your favourite TV programmes? From Laura
Kian - White
Bryan - Red
Shane - Black
Mark - Purple
Nicky - blue/white
Mark - One of my favourites has definitely gotta be 'Friends.' Lisa Kudrow (who plays Phoebe) is my favourite actress, she cracks me up everytime!

What might you bring out next? Helen
Nicky - We're releasing a charity single 'UpTown Girl' on 5th March in aid of Comic Relief. Wait till you see the video for UpTown Girl its fantastic! It features Claudia Schiffer, she was great fun to work with.

This question is for everyone:-If you could be stuck in a lift with any one who would it be and why? By Jess
Mark - My greatest hero is Michael Jackson. We just actually found out he is a fan of ours and wants to meet up next time he comes over to England. There's also talk of him wanting to work with us which would be absolutely fantastic, a dream come true.

When the band is staying in a hotel, who rooms with who, who's the messiest and who snores the loudest?!! By Yvonne
Bryan: Shane and myself usually share a room and I'd say we are definitely the messiest! I'd say he snores the loudest but then again he'd probably argue it was me!!

Hey Shane! I'm going to your concert on the 17th March, what can I do to get you to notice me? By Sheena
Shane: That's easy, scream as loud as you can!! It's such a great feeling to look around the arena and to see everyone having such a great time.

Hiya Westlife. I would like to know if you enjoy the career? And I would like to become a singer, how would I get started? Linda
Kian: I love my career, being on stage and performing is the best feeling, absolutely fantastic. It's a lot of hard work but it really pays off when you hear the screams and see everyone having such a good time. My advice to you would be to practice and not to give up hope! Be determined and work hard!

If you could be one popster from the past or present for the day, who would you be and why? Krazy Kitten
Mark: Michael Jackson is one of my greatest hero's. I always wanted to be him when I was younger and I'd watch all his performances and try to copy his moves. It's one of my ambitions to meet him.

When you get into a relationship is it hard to see the partner regularly or do u make time in your busy schedule ?.. by a big fan of westlife and wickedcolors
Nicky: Its really hard as I don't get to see Georgina as much as I'd like to but we are totally committed to each other. I fly to be with her whenever I can and we speak on the phone at least five times a day. When we were in America I didn't see her for three months which was really hard but we get through it somehow.

Have you made any new year resolutions, if so what were they? Becky Morgan
Kian: I know we'd all love to do another duet. We enjoyed working with Mariah Carey and have discussed a few others we'd love to record with, watch this space…! We also hope the tour goes well as it's our first!

Who gets the most fan mail and whos the most popular with the girls ?I have always wanted to know! Love Rachel
I don't think he'd like to admit it but Shane gets the most screams from the audience when we're on tour!

How did u all meet and how did you get started? luv Chantelle
Mark: Well, myself, Kian and Shane were in a band already called I.O.YOU. Shane's mum actually approached Louis Walsh (Boyzone's manager) but he didn't really have the time to manage another band. He contacted Ronan and he agreed to co-manage us with Louis. Auditions were held for two more members and that's when we found Nicky and Bryan. Initially we were called Westside but we later found out that another group had the same name and so changed ours to Westlife. We haven't looked back since!
