chapter fifteen
There was a knock at the door. "Who is it?" Sarah asked, transfixed by the photo. "Ahh... it's... erm.... Bryan" Bryan replied from outside in the hallway. Sarah jumped and headed straight for the mirror. After she'd quickly straightened her hair and put on a bit of lippy she called back softly "come in!".
Bryan opened the door slowly, not knowing what to expect. Would she be mad? He was nervous and had squashed the corner of the box of chocolates because of the tension.
Sarah was sitting on the edge of the bed, in her pyjamas. They weren't particularly sexy or anything and she only just then realised it. Wishing she'd put on a silk pair or a little, silk nighty or something, Sarah tried her hardest to look completely attractive in every way. She put her chin down and looked at Bryan though her long, dark eyelashes.
Bryan was gobsmacked, even in her night clothes she was gorgeous! He dropped the box of chocolates and had to quickly pick them up again. He held them out towards her and then suddenly fell to his knees, "I'm sooo sorry!" he told her "I got distracted, I didn't mean to. Please forgive me!"
Sarah smirked "ok" she replied "Just don't do it again!" she was very forgiving and just cared that he was ok, nothing else mattered to her. Bryan sighed with relief "Don't worry it'll never happen again, I promise!"
Sarah took the box of chocolates and placed them beside her on the bed, "Thank you" she told him. "For what?" Bryan asked, wiping away the nervous sweat from his forehead. Sarah patted the box and Bryan smiled, "No problem".
Sarah patted the other side of the bed next to her, signalling Bryan to sit down. Bryan sat down immediately. Rubbing his hands together nervously. Again he was speechless. He couldn't look at her and instead stared at the floor.
Sarah gazed adoringly at him "Can't you look at me?" she asked. Bryan's head spun around "Sorry, I'm just nervous" he told her. "You're nervous! Your should try being me" she smiled, putting her hand reassuringly onto his "I'm in a new country I've never been to before, with a family I've never met before all by myself!".
"I am sorry" Bryan told her again, he was so ashamed at his behaviour. "I told you that was alright, it's ok really" Sarah told him "Your family's very friendly. They put me at ease. I was lucky, they could have been the family from hell and left me on the doorstep!".
"I'll make it up to you, I promise" Bryan told her sincerely. "You already have" Sarah replied, gazing into his eyes "You already have". Bryan stroked her cheek and kissed her.
The next day Bryan decided he wanted Sarah to stay with him in his house. His parents didn't mind Sarah staying with them but Bryan wanted to be with her every second of every day.
"We should have done this in the first place" Bryan told Sarah as he drove her to his house on the outskirts of Dublin. "I wouldn't have been able to get in!" Sarah joked, Bryan by now had got used to Sarah's teasing him and he would tease her back sometimes. "You'd vanished without a trace remember!" she said smiling as they pulled up to Bryan's country home.
Sarah loved it there. He was living in a renovated barn that was now a gorgeous, little house. There were beams on the ceilings and Sarah's room was wonderful. It was dark red and had loads of mahogany furniture in it. It looked very medieval. Bryan had only recently had it decorated. There was a stye in the garden too which had been there as long as the old barn and the old farm that had once been there too.
Bryan and Sarah sat on the floor in front of the fire, curled up together. Sarah had only been there a few days and they were already like a couple who had known each other for years. Since Sarah had arrived they'd gone to the supermarket together, got Bryan a new pair of boxers which Sarah had actually picked out, and watched the sun rise together on the beach.
They had fallen in love. They both knew it. They never told each other though, both were afraid that their relationship had been too short and they were both afraid to rush things when they were so brilliant.
Sarah knew nothing of Bryan's discovery and she hadn't mentioned the photo in Susan's album either. She had a nagging feeling about it thought. It was odd to her that Bryan was bawling his eyes out in the picture, but everyone else were as happy as could be.
Now was the time to bring it up she thought. "Susan left her photo album out for me to look at" she told him. "Oh really, did you have a good giggle at my expense?" Bryan asked smiling. "There's a photo of you all in Yorkshire" Sarah started "You didn't look very happy at all".
"My parents took us to this old mansion and I hated it, I can't explain why" Bryan replied. "I think I know why" Sarah told him. Suddenly everything clicked into place for Bryan. Sarah saw it in his face and as they each revealed what they knew the story became more and more clear.
Bryan was amazed at Sarah. Through the last few weeks he felt he'd really got to know her. He was certain she'd have been upset, but if she was she wasn't showing it very much. She just seemed emotionally drained.
"I want to go there" she told him, she had an urge to return there, where she or whoever she'd been had lived. "I don't!" Bryan replied back. Sarah could see the look of pain and discomfort as he said it in his face. "Ok, we won't got there" she reassured him.
Sarah turned and stroked his hair out of his eyes. Bryan then stroked her cheek softly. Sarah closed her eyes and smiled as Bryan leant forward and kissed her gently on the lips.
Bryan held out his hand and Sarah took it. He slowly led her upstairs to his bedroom where they were to share something beautiful that neither had experienced before.
