chapter four When I got to Shane’s house no one answered the door but when I turned the knob the door opened. I went inside. At that moment Bryan came from the inner room. ‘I thought I heard someone,’ he said. ‘Is Anna here?’ ‘Nop, she and Shane went to his parents in the country. The won’t be back until tomorrow morning.’ ‘Oh.’ ‘Is there anything I can help you with? It seems like you need someone to talk to.’ At that moment I felt how tears started running down my cheeks. ‘What’s the matter?’ He put his arms around me. I couldn’t speak so he led me to the sofa and sat me down and just held me ‘till I could tell him what was wrong. When I had told him everything that had happened between me and Kian we just sat and talked for hours. Eventually we fell asleep leaning on each other. ‘Halloooo!!! Bryan, rise and shine, we’re home now!’ ‘Anna, let him sleep it’s still pretty early.’ ‘OK, I’ll just go in the sitting room to…’ Shane came just behind me. ‘To what?’ He said before he saw what I saw. There were Bryan on the sofa, with Jenny. I was speechless. Bryan was just wakening up. ‘Bry, what’s going on?’ I whispered since I didn’t want to wake up Jenny. ‘She split up with Kian. She needed someone to talk to and since you weren’t here…’ ‘You don’t have to explain. We’ll talk about it later when she’s awake, OK?’ I quietly walked out of the room taking a confused Shane with me. When Jenny woke up she filled us in on what had happened. ‘I think I’ll go back to London now.’ Jenny finished. ‘Why?’ I asked. ‘You don’t have to leave, you can stay here with us, can’t she Shane?’ Anna said. ‘No, it’s better that I go home now. Perhaps I’ll come an visit some other time but it’s not fair to Kian to stay here. He needs some time to get over me and he doesn’t need to see me all the time while he’s doing that.’ ‘OK, but I really wish you’d reconsider,’ Anna said. ‘When is the next bus for Dublin from here?’ Jenny asked. ‘I don’t know.’ ‘You don’t have to take the bus Jenny,’ Bryan said. ‘I need to get to my flat anyway so you can catch a lift with me.’ ‘I don’t want to cause any trouble for you.’ ‘There’s no trouble. It’ll be my pleasure.’ On our way to Dublin Bryan convinced me to stay with him in his flat a couple of days. He and the guys were flying to London then and I might as well wait and fly with them. Besides, he didn’t want to be all by himself if it could be avoided. ‘I’ll take the sofa and you can take the bed.’ Bryan said. ‘That’s not fair,’ I objected. ‘It’s your flat, you shouldn’t have to sleep on the sofa.’ ‘Don’t argue with me, I like to sleep on the sofa.’ ‘Sure. Goodnight Bryan.’ I said and gave him a hug. It’s really nice of you to let me stay here for a couple of days.’ ‘Goodnight Jen, and it’s my pleasure.’ In the middle of the night I woke up when somebody entered the room. I figured it was Bryan who was getting something. ‘What are you looking for Bry?’ I asked. ‘Do you want me to turn on the lights?’ He just mumbled something then he went over to the bed and fell asleep. I didn’t really know what to think about all of this but I was to tired to think so I just rolled over and continued sleeping. In the morning Bryan woke up first. When he opened his eyes he saw Jenny beside him. How did I get here? He got up as quiet as he could but Jenny still woke up. ‘Morning Bry.’ ‘Morning.’ He said embarrassed. ‘Why didn’t you answer me when I talked to you last night?’ ‘What?’ ‘When you came in here and went to bed. You didn’t answer me when I tried to talk to you. Don’t you remember?’ ‘No I don’t. Oh no…’ ‘What?’ ‘I’m so sorry Jen, I should have told you.’ ‘Should have told me what?’ ‘I sleep walk. I don’t mean to but I do. I’m so sorry…’ ‘It’s OK. I don’t mind.’ ‘You don’t?’ Bryan looked at me in disbelief. ‘No, it’s not like you tried to do something or so. Just forget about it.’ ‘OK, if you say so, your wish is my command.’ |
