the guy in the towel

chapter seven

In room 332

Jenny was sitting in bed watching TV when there was a knock on the door.

‘Who is it?’ She shouted getting up.

‘It’s Kian. Remember me?’

I opened the door and there Kian stood smiling.

‘Hi there, wanna go for a drink?’

‘No, not really. Why else would I be up here instead of down there with you guys.’

‘I’m not sure but I’m not leaving without you. If you’re not coming I’ll just have to stay here for the rest of the night.’

I looked at him and then I invited him in.

‘Wait a minute so I can get dressed.’

‘So what have you been doing today then boys? Did you work up a sweat at the construction site?’

‘You couldn’t imagine’, Shane said real flirty.

I felt Mark looking strangely at me. I took his hand under the table and squeezed it reassuring.

‘I bet I couldn’t.’

Suddenly a phone started to ring. It was Nicky’s mobile.

‘Nicky here.’

‘Oh, hi Georgina.’

I leant over to Mark and whispered:

‘Who’s Georgina?’

‘It’s Nicky’s girlfriend. They’ve been together like forever.’

‘Oh, I see.’

Nicky put his hand over the receiver.

‘I’m sorry but I’ll have to go. The reception is really bad here. I’ll see you later, OK? Say hi to your friend from me…’ He walked away talking to Georgina.

‘He really loves her, doesn’t he?’

‘Yeah. Love’s grand isn’t it?’ Shane said meaningfully staring into my eyes. He caught my eye and I could only nod affirmatively.

‘Where have Kian and Jenny gone off to? It’s ages ago since he went up to get her. I think I’m going to go and check what’s going on.’ As Bryan was getting up Kian and Jenny came to our table.

‘So you decided to come down after all? I said, happy to be able to get away from Shane’s hypnotasingly gaze.

‘He finally persuaded me.’

Bryan looked funny at Jenny. Jenny didn’t notice Bryan’s hurt look.

Everything was a complete mess. Shane kept on flirting with me at the same time as Mark’s hand kept moving up and down my leg. Bryan was hurt because Jenny sat and talked to Kian having a wonderful time, as revenge he turned his attention to me. Suddenly I had three guys fighting for my attention.

It was getting late and the crowd was dissolving. Soon we were the only ones left. They started playing a slow song. Before Mark had a chance to ask me for the dance Shane had already done it. I looked apologising at Mark as Shane led me onto the dance floor. At the same time Jen and Kian entered the dance floor. After a little while Bryan came up to Shane and me.

‘Can I cut in?’

Shane reluctantly steeped aside.

‘How are you coping with this?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Jen and Ki dancing of course.’

‘So you know…’

‘Yeah, she told me.’

‘Anna, why is she acting this way? He whispered. Does she really want to hurt me?’

‘I don’t think so. She really likes you, she just hasn’t admitted it to herself yet.’

The song ended. Bryan went over to the bar and talked to the bartender. He went up on stage and got ready to sing.

‘What’s he doing?’ Jen asked me.

‘I don’t know. I guess we’re about to find out though.’

Look into my eyes

You will see

What you mean to me

Search your heart

Search your soul

And when you find me there you’ll search no more

Don’t tell me it’s not worth trying for

Can’t tell me it’s not worth dying for

You know it’s true,

Everything I do

I do it for you

I sat spellbound by his wonderful voice. Jenny looked at me, then at Bryan, then at me again. Then she ran out of the room.
