the guy in the towel

chapter eight

When Bryan came back he looked for Jenny in vane.

‘Did you really have to sing that song?’ Kian said angrily.

‘Why do you say that?’

‘Don’t you know she just broke up with her boyfriend?’

‘Of course I do but what has that to do with anything?’

‘Hello. A romantic love song… Do I have to spell it out for you?’

I took Bryan’s arm and pulled him away from the others.

‘Go and talk to her. She needs to know you care. I’ll stay here.’

‘You have your own little mess to sort out.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Both Shane and Mark want’s you. It’s so obvious. You’d better get back there before they start to fight over you.’

What he said was too close to the truth for me to notice the twinkle in his eye when he said it. Bryan went after Jenny and when I turned to go back Shane was by my side. I seized the opportunity to have a little private chat with him.

‘Shane, you really need to stop flirting with me like that. I told you, I’m not interested.’

‘Wrong, he said. You said that you were sort of involved with someone else but it’s not that serious yet any ways. And what’s the harm in me flirting with you? It’s not like that guy is here, is he?’

‘Hmm, no, eeh, but I’d still rather you didn’t. Can’t you at least try not to flirt with me?’

‘For you love, anything.’

‘Shane, you’re flirting again.’

‘Sorry. I just don’t seem to be able to help my self. But I know that eventually you’ll come back to me.’

‘Shane…’

‘OK, OK.’

As we came to the table the others was breaking up for the evening.

‘Do you want to go for a walk again, Anna? Mark asked.

‘Sure I could use some fresh air after a night like this. Anyone care to join us?’

‘I think I’m going to check that Jenny’s OK,’ Kian said.

‘OK. Shane?’ (I made it real clear with my tone of voice that he wasn’t welcome.)

‘No, I think I’ll pass, but thanks for the offer.’

When Bryan came to Jenny’s door he just walked in without knocking.

‘What do you think you’re doing?! Jenny shouted. Out! I don’t want to see you, not ever again!’

Then she broke down and started to cry. Bryan ran up to her and put his arms around her.

‘Why are you crying? Is it because of that song I sang? Was it yours and your boyfriend’s song?’

‘EX-boyfriend. No, it wasn’t, she said between sobs. It’s all your fault.’

‘What did I do?’

‘You flirted with Anna and then you sang for her.’

‘No, I didn’t. I sang for you.’

‘You did? She said doubtfully. Why did you dance with her then?’

‘You were so busy dancing and having a good time with Kian so I wanted to do something that would catch your attention. But I never meant that you would be hurt and sad over it.’

‘Just a fine pair of friends we are, being jealous when we dance with others.’

‘Would you consider being more than friends with me? I just wanted to be friends because I didn’t think there was any other way to still be able to see you.’

Jenny looked him deeply in his eyes and kissed him.

‘Is that answer enough for you?’

‘Kiss me again and I’ll tell you later.’

At that moment the door opened.

‘Jenny, are you…’ Kian didn’t finish the sentence.
