the competition that offered a bigger price than anyone knew - chapter one

Anna woke early, to make sure she had plenty of time to get ready. Today was the big day. Ever since she’d seen WestSide supporting Boyzone back in 1998, she’d been smitten, and when Boyzone went their separate ways, Westlife became a full-blown obsession. All her mates took the mick - a woman of 23 being obsessed by 5 cheesy pop singer guys. But she didn’t care.

She had entered every Westlife competition there was, and finally, two weeks ago, she had had a phone call from someone called Sharon at the Smash Hits office. She had won a competition to spend a day with Westlife, as they prepared for their first time headlining at Wembley, see the show and then hang out at the after-show party. Anna was amazed that she’d won. She’d spent so long trying to win even just an autograph, and now she was about to spend the day with Westlife!

After a quick shower, Anna leapt into the clothes she’d got ready the night before, grabbed her bag, making sure her camera and spare film were still in there, and ran to her front door when she heard the door bell ring. Sharon had told her that they’d be sending a car for her at eight o’clock. When Anna opened the door, her jaw hit the ground. Outside Kian was leaning against the doorframe, looking half-asleep. At the kerb, there was a black limo parked.

‘Are you Anna?’ he asked, suddenly perking up. ‘I sure am. Wow. I wasn’t expecting this at all.’ ‘I know. It was meant to be a surprise. We were all supposed to come, but the guys were out partying last night, and they all needed a bit longer in bed.’ Kian rolled his eyes and Anna laughed. ‘What a smile’, Kian thought.

‘Thanks then, for getting up.’ ‘That’s okay. So, are we going to stand out in the cold talking all day, or are we going to get in the car?’ ‘I guess we should get in the car. I’ve never been in a limo before.’ ‘There’s a first time for everything!’ Anna nodded as she slid into the luxurious back seat. She still couldn’t believe that she was talking to Kian from Westlife.

‘I don’t mean to sound really star struck, but I’m slightly amazed this is actually happening.’ Kian smiled at her honesty and Anna just about melted away. ‘Star struck?! At least you treat me like a human being. I’ve had girls running up to me, and nearly strangling me they hugged me so tight, pulling my hair, ripping my clothes. It’s mad.’

‘Come on, are you telling me you’ve never fancied any of your fans? Honestly?’ ‘No, never. That could be changing right now though....’ Kian looked into Anna’s deep brown eyes and she blushed. ‘Sorry, I didn’t mean to embarrass you. That was mean of me.’

‘No....It’s okay. So, errr, what are you guys doing today? Or should I say, us guys, as I’ll be tagging along for the day!’ Anna tried to change the subject quickly. She couldn’t quite believe that the guys she’d had a crush on for the past three years had effectively just said that he fancied her! It was like a dream.

‘Well, in about an hour and a half, we’ve got three interviews in a row, for magazines, and then two telly ones. Then a break for lunch for a couple of hours, and then a photo shoot until 4 this afternoon. Then we go to the venue for a sound check. That takes about half an hour. We’re doing meet and greets for about an hour after that. Then back to the hotel for a meal and a bit of a rest, and then we go back to the venue for about 8.15 to get ready for being on-stage at 9. Not a busy day really.’

‘Not a busy day? Are you kidding? You’re hardly going to stop!’ ‘That’s normal for us now. It’s amazing. None of us can believe this is happening. I mean, we played Wembley with Boyzone, but to headline....?’

‘I know. That’s where I first saw you. Supporting Boyzone, I mean. You guys were better than they were!’ ‘I’m not sure about that, but thanks for the compliment!’ ‘You’re welcome.’ ‘Anyway, we’re at the hotel now. The guys should be up now, do you feel like coming and getting some breakfast with us? I didn’t have any before I came to meet you.’ ‘Yeah, that’d be great. I only had a cup of coffee.’ Kian and Anna went straight into the dining room. Shane and Mark waved them across.

‘Hey, Anna right?’ Shane stood up and gave her a hug. ‘Yeah. Hi guys. Have you recovered yet?’ ‘Kian, what have you been telling her?’ Mark laughed. ‘Don’t listen to him.’ ‘Where are Bryan and Nicky? Are they not up yet?’ It was Kian’s turn to blush and change the subject now.

‘Nicky’s on the phone to Georgina. He should be down in a couple of minutes, and Bryan’s gone off to chat up some girl who he met last night and discovered was staying here too! Typical Bry!’ They all laughed.

When Anna went off with Mark to the buffet to get some breakfast a few minutes later, Shane and Kian started talking. ‘Wow.’ Shane looked impressed. ‘She is stunning! And really nice too, if first impressions count for anything.’ ‘They do. Count. She’s really nice. We were talking like old friends on the way here. She’s beautiful too.’

‘Do I get the feeling that our Ki’ has a little crush on Anna?’ Shane was teasing him now. ‘Don’t joke about it man. There’s something special about her. I only hope I can find out exactly what before she has to go home tonight.’ Kian looked worried.

‘Ki’ don’t worry. I think the feeling’s mutual. She couldn’t keep her eyes off you!’ ‘You’d better not be messin’ man. I really like her. I like her too much. It’s scaring me Shane - I’ve never felt this way about someone this quickly before. In fact, I’ve never felt like this about someone before!’ Shane saw by the look in Kian’s eye that he was serious.

‘D’you want me to try and talk to her and see if she likes you?’ ‘No! Well, not yet. See how it goes, and maybe I’ll get back to you on that one later. Thanks for offering. I might take you up on it.’ ‘Don’t miss out just cos you’re scared. It’s not worth it. If you think she’s special, talk to her, tell her. We don’t get much of a chance to meet ‘real’ people anymore, don’t let this chance slip by.’ Kian nodded, but he wasn’t really listening. He was watching Anna and Mark. Mark was mucking about, and Anna was smiling. She really was beautiful... And that smile. That smile that was so beautiful, but the person smiling was even more beautiful. Anna. Anna and Kian. Kian and Anna. It had a nice ring to it.
