the competition that offered a bigger price than anyone knew - chapter six
‘Anna. Anna? Wake up. Breakfast.’ Anna rubbed her eyes, yawned, and looked up to see Kian leaning over the bed, holding a tray with her breakfast on it. ‘What have I done to deserve this?’ She sat up, and propped the pillows behind her head.
‘You haven’t done anything. Except been here for me over the past few months. I was thinking what a bastard I’ve probably been over the last couple of months. This whole Bryan saga has really got to me, but you’ve been fabulous. And I’ve decided to put the whole thing behind me, and get on with life.’ Kian smiled.
‘If you’ve been a bastard the past couple of months, then you’ve been a bastard for all the time I’ve known you. And you’ve been absolutely gorgeous in every sense of the word, so if you’re going to stop being a bastard now, you’re going to be pretty close to perfection!’ She giggled and Kian laughed too.
‘You mean I’m not perfect already? I’m hurt Anna, really I am.’ Kian crawled into bed next to her and pinched a piece of her toast. ‘Hey! That’s mine!’ ‘Who got up with the dawn chorus this morning to get it for you? Don’t I deserve it?’ ‘I should have known there’d be an ulterior motive behind all this!’ They giggled again and kissed, totally relaxed in each other’s company. ‘Well, what have you got on today?’ Anna could never keep track of Kian’s diary.
‘Umm, nothing much. A couple of interviews and a photoshoot this morning. But nothing this afternoon. Feel like meeting me for lunch?’ ‘I suppose I could fit you into my busy schedule.’ What a joke! Anna had given up her job a month earlier to spend more time with Kian. They had got very serious, very quickly, and they couldn’t bare to be apart from each other. ‘Where do you want to go?’
‘How about Est Est Est? It’s normally quiet there at lunchtime, and they know me now, and always give me a quiet table.’ ‘Sure that sounds great. Do you want me to bring the stuff we’re taking up to Edinburgh with us then, or will there be time to come back to your flat afterwards?’
‘Could you bring it with you? I was thinking we could do a bit of shopping before the flight.’ ‘That’s cool. See you there at about 1, okay? You’d better go, it’s after 9 already.’ ‘Do I have to?’ Kian whined, like a two-year-old. ‘You know you do.’ Ki’ climbed out of bed, gave Anna a quick kiss on the forehead, grabbed his jacket and left. Anna sighed. She wanted him to stay too, but she knew he couldn’t.
‘What kept you this morning?’ Shane smiled, knowing full well what, or who, it was. ‘Sorry, traffic!’ Kian never had been good at lying. ‘Don’t worry, you haven’t missed much. Mark and Nicky are stuck in some meeting. They won’t be here for an hour or so. I’ve done my shots, and they’re just about ready to get you.’
‘Cool. So will we be finished early then?’ ‘Depends. If Mark and Nick get here before you’ve finished, they’ll go into make up so they can start straight after you, but if they don’t come til later, we’ll do the interviews first, and they’ll do their shots later. Why are you so keen to disappear anyway?’
‘I’m meeting Anna for lunch. And, I’m going to ask her to move in with me.’ Kian blurted it out. He hadn’t told anyone up until then. Anna had practically been living with him anyway, and had already moved some of her stuff in, but he wanted to make it official.
‘Really? Well done Ki’. I’m pleased for you. Are you on the same flight as us tomorrow?’ ‘No. We’re flying up this afternoon. Anna’s got friends in Edinburgh, or just outside anyway, and she wants me to meet them.’ ‘Mmm, sounds serious.’
‘It is I guess. I really think she’s the one Shane. I think I love her.’ ‘I wouldn’t be surprised, the way you rabbit on about her all the time! You’re a lucky man Ki’. She’s a great girl.’ ‘Don’t let Lucy hear you saying that! I doubt she’d be too pleased.’
‘I dunno. I’m thinking of ending it with her. There’s nothing there. Chemistry, y’know. She’s really fab, but I just don’t want to lead her on.’ ‘That’s a shame. Listen, I better go and get changed, I wanna get out of here so I can get a set of keys cut before I go to lunch.’
Anna wandered into Est Est Est and asked a waiter if Kian had arrived yet. He nodded and pointed to a table in the corner, right at the back. Anna could see Kian talking into his mobile. She came up behind him after he had put the phone down and tickled his neck. He jumped, and turned round. ‘Hey gorgeous! How you doing?’
‘Good thanks. You? How did it go this morning?’ ’Well. Nicky and Mark were held up, but that meant we actually got finished earlier. Well, Shane and I did. Mark and Nick will still be there!!’ ‘That’s cool. I’ve left our bags in at the desk at the flat. They said they’d keep them there for me, to save us having to go up when we pick them up on the way to the airport.’
‘Great. What time are we meeting your friends?’ ‘Sometime after 8. I’ve got to give them a call when we get there, and see when we think we’re going to be ready.’ ‘I’m not working until tomorrow afternoon, so we don’t have to be back at the hotel early. It’ll be good to have a night out for once!’ ‘Yeah. Mike and Tasha are really decent. I’m sure you’ll like them. I haven’t seen them since their wedding actually, but me and Tash have been friends for years!’
‘Cool. What do you want to eat?’ ‘Umm,’ Anna glanced at the menu. ’I’ll just have a salad I think. I don’t like flying on a full stomach.’ ‘Yeah that’s what I was thinking. We haven’t got time for much more than that,’ Kian checked his watch. ‘We have to be at the airport in just over an hour. And we need to talk whilst we’re here.’
‘What about?’ ‘Well, I guess now’s as good a time as any! Anna, I want you to move in with me. Permanently.' Kian reached into his pocket and pulled out the keys he’d had cut on his way here from the studio. ‘What d’you say?’
‘Yes, you moron! I’m practically living there already! Now I can sell my place!’ ‘Really? You really want to?’ ‘Course, you dipstick! How many nights have I actually spent at my flat in the past month?’ Kian smiled, and a look of relief washed over his face.
