who's who in the game of love

chapter six

That night

Sam was at Mark’s house. She needed a friend to talk to.

‘So do you believe him then?’ Mark asked when Sam had told him everything.

‘I don’t know. I want to but it’s hard to know for sure.’

‘How are you going to find out if Lisa’s lying, you are going to try to find out, right?

‘Of course I am, I just don’t know how. Any ideas?’

‘Maybe Shane could get her to confess while you’re listening.’

‘Yeah, but how?’

‘It’ll come to you, I promise.’

They continued to talk into the night and eventually Sam and Mark fell asleep on his bed where they had been sitting.

The next morning

‘Mark? Are you home?’ Bryan shouted. Since no one had answered the door he had just walked in.

‘Perhaps he’s still sleeping’ Bryan thought and climbed the stairs leading up to Mark’s room. He looked through the open door and what he saw made him run down the stairs to get away from there as soon as possible. On the bed lied Sam and Mark in each other’s arms. When they woke up still in each other’s arms. They were both a little embarrassed.

‘It almost felt like old times there for a while,’ Mark said. ‘But now when we’re awake we have to live in reality.’ He got up from the bed so she wouldn’t see the tears in his eyes. ‘You’ve got Bryan now and I have my girl. Want some breakfast?’

‘Sure, I’m starving.’

Sam looked longingly after him when he went out of the room. She took a moment to get herself together before she joined him in the kitchen.

Two days later

Shane and Kian are sitting in a café talking. Shane have been trying to get a hold of both Cat and Lisa the past few days but Cat haven’t answered and he haven’t been able to contact Lisa either.

‘I don’t know what to do.’ Shane tells Kian. ‘How am I supposed to strait things out with her if she won’t even speak to me?’

‘I don’t know…’ Kian’s cell-phone rings and interrupts them.

‘Kian.’

‘Hi, Ki. It’s me Cat. Is Shane there with you?’

‘Yeah, do you want to talk to him?’

‘Who is it?’ Shane asked. ‘Is it Cat?’

‘No, don’t tell him it’s me!’ Cat says to Kian.

‘No,’ Kian answers Shane’s question.

‘Thanks Ki.’ Cat says.

‘Can you do me a favour?’

‘Sure.’

‘Can you tell Shane to stop calling me?’

Kian puts his hand over the receiver.

‘Shane stop calling Cat.’

‘It is Cat you’re talking to,’ Shane shouts and tries to take the phone from Kian.

‘Thanks Ki.’ Cat says and as she hangs up Shane gets a hold of the phone.

‘Cat?’ But there’s no one there.

‘It was Cat, wasn’t it?’ Shane asks.

‘Perhaps.’

‘What did she say? Did she say anything about me, or when she will be back?’

‘She didn’t say. The only thing she said was that I should tell you to stop calling her. That’s it, I promise. I’m sorry.’

At that moment Sam came in.

‘Have any of you seen Bryan?’ Sam asked.

‘Not since this morning. Why?’ Kian said.

‘I want to talk to him. He’s been avoiding me for a couple of days now and I don’t know why.’

‘Why don’t you join us and talk about your problems for a while and who knows, maybe he’ll show up.’ Kian said and pulled out a chair. Sam looked at Shane who nodded that he too wanted her to sit.

‘So what did you do the last time you met then?’ Kian asked.

‘It was at the party. You don’t think he could be cross because I left him without saying goodbye when Cat ran away?’

‘No I don’t think so’ Kian said. ‘Do you Shane?’

Shane didn’t answer he just looked steadily out the window.

‘Shane?’ Kian said. He looked in the same direction and saw Lisa standing outside talking to a friend.

‘Excuse me I have some business to take care of.’ Shane said and got up.

‘What?’ Sam said and in that moment she too saw Lisa.

‘Are you going to talk to her?’ She asked him.

‘Yeah, I’m going to make her confess that she’s been lying.’

‘I need to hear that.’ Sam said and got up to join him. They started walking towards the door. Kian got up and stopped them.

‘Do you actually think she’ll confess if the both of you go out there like two gorillas and tries to pound it out of her? I don’t think so.’

‘Do you have a better idea then?’ Shane said looking out to see that Lisa was still there.

‘Why don’t you just leave your cell-phone on in you pocket so she can hear you talking without having to be close.’

‘I hate to say this but Ki might have a point there.’ Sam said.

Shane switched his phone on and dialled Sam’s number before he went out the door to talk to Lisa.

Shane pulled himself together before he walked up to Lisa to start talking.

‘Hi Lisa.’

‘Hi Shane. Nice to see you again.’

‘Yeah. Did you have fun at Mark’s party?’

‘Yeah, I had a blast. How about you?’

‘Did you talk to Cat at the party?’

‘Cat? I might have. Who is that?’

‘Cat, Catherine. You used to play with each other before you moved to Dublin…’

‘Yeah right, Catherine. I think so. But did you have a good time at the party?’

‘What did you talk about then?’

‘About this and that. It’s not important. What are you going to do tonight then?’ Lisa asked dropping her previous question.

‘Nothing special, but did you happen to mention London to her?’

‘Yeah, we talked about it a little. Want to go out for a movie tonight?’

‘No I don’t. Did you say to her that we have something going on between us?’ Shane asked tired to beating around the bush.

‘I don’t think so…’

‘You did and she believed you.’

‘So what? Why don’t you want to go out with me Shane?’

‘Why did you lie to her?’ Shane was having a hard time keeping control over his emotions.

‘It was just a little white lie. So I exaggerated a little, why are you so hung up about it? Can’t we talk about something else instead?’

To prevent him self from hitting her Shane just turned around and walked back to Kian and Sam He had his confession and hopefully Sam had heard it so there was no need to stay and get even angrier. Lisa just stood there and looked after him not knowing what had happened really.

When Shane got back to the table he asked Sam if she’d heard what he and Lisa had been saying.

‘Yeah, I heard everything. I’m so sorry I doubted you Shane. Can you forgive me?’ Sam said.

‘Sure, I would probably react the same way if I were you.’ He gave Sam a hug.

‘Can you tell me where Cat is now?’ He asked when he sat down again.

‘No, I’ve promised. You understand don’t you?’

‘Yeah, I understand.’ Shane said sadly.

‘But I can call her now if you want.’ Sam said.

‘You can?’ Shane lit up. ‘What are you waiting for then? Call her!’

Sam dialled the number to Cat’s cell-phone.

‘Hi Sam.’

‘Hi sis. I have something to tell you.’ Sam said. ‘Shane’s innocent.’

‘How so you know?’ Cat asked sceptically.

‘He talked to Lisa while I was listening and she confessed.’

‘So she said to you that there hadn’t been anything between them?’

‘Not exactly but I heard her say it.’

‘I don’t know…’

‘He’s here you know and he really wants to talk to you. Shall I put him on?’

‘No, don’t do that! I need some time to take everything in.’

Sam was just going to persuade her when she saw Bryan outside.

‘OK, I’ll tell him you’ll call him later then. Give my love to Aunt Mary and well talk later. Bye.’

‘She still didn’t want to talk to me?’ Shane looked hurt.

‘No, I’m sorry.’ Sam was getting up. ‘I have to run, I’ll catch you guys later, OK?’ She ran out to try to catch Bryan.

‘It doesn’t seem to matter what I do,’ Shane said hopeless. ‘She’s made up her mind that I’ve done it and I’ll never see her again.’

‘Don’t bet on that.’ Kian said smiling. ‘Didn’t you hear that she said to Cat to give her love to Aunt Mary?’

‘Yeah.’ He had caught Shane’s attention.

‘And their Aunt lives in…’

‘…Dublin.’ Shane filled in. ‘I even know where in Dublin she lives. I’m going to Dublin right now.’ He got up.

‘Do you want me to come?’ Kian asked.

‘No, I think it’s better I do this alone.’

‘I understand. Good luck!’

‘Thanks…’ Shane was out the door before he could finish the sentence.
