A number of former West Side players have continued their athletic careers in college, including:


Randy Fenton (1997) & Shawn Hayes (2000)
The 2005 Franklin Pierce baseball team, ranked 27th in NCAA DII, reached the 30 win plateau for the 4th year in a row this season thanks to contributions from two West Side alums.

Randy Fenton, a junior and the team's captain, led the 30-12 Ravens to the Northeast-10 tournament championship this season and the team's second NCAA DII tournament berth in 3 years. Franklin Pierce will host the Northeast Regional tournament this weekend as the top seed in the four team field. Fenton hit .500 (6-for-12) with 3 RBI's and two runs scored en route to being named MVP of the NE-10 league tournament. Fenton is now hitting a team-leading .519 (14-27) with two doubles, five RBI and eight runs scored in the month of May and has upped his season average to .322. During the regular season Randy appeared in 30 games for Franklin Pierce, primarily in right field but also at the middle infield positions, compiling a .293 batting average. In 2004 Fenton started 43 games at shortstop for Franklin Pierce (NH) College filling in for injured West Side alum Shawn Hayes. Fenton helpted the defending Northeast Regional NCAA champions to a 32-23 2004 record, the 2004 ECAC Division II Baseball Championship and a 25th place ranking in the NCAA Division II regular season national rankings. Fenton had a .379 slugging percentage, a .373 on-base percentage and successfully stole 13 bases in 16 attempts for the Ravens. He hit .556 with a homer and three RBIs in the three game ECAC championship series against Wilmington (DE) College.

Shawn Hayes is fully recovered from a 2004 season full of injuries. The junior shortstop leads the 2005 team in hitting with a stellar .405 mark, including a team-leading .683 slugging percentage. He also has stolen 14 bases in 17 attempts. In the Raven's 7-4 win over Stonehill in the NE-10 title game last week, Hayes went 3-4 with a pair of doubles, and RBI and a stolen base. In 2003, Hayes started in 47 of the team's 49 games as a freshman, batting .271 with a .908 fielding percentage. Franklin Pierce advanced to the DII College World Series that year, finishing 4th, and ending the year with a 32-17 record.




Marco Charamella-1998
Marco Charamella had a terrific senior season at Bates College this spring, compiling a 2-1 record and a 2.52 ERA in 8 appearances for the Bobcats. In 2004 he appeared in 5 games and helped Bates to one of its best seasons in recent years as it finished 6-6 in the extremely competive NESCAC East division and 13-18 overall for the season.




Dan O'Connor-2000
Junior Dan O'Connor posted a 1-4 record in 9 appearances for a young St. Michael's team this spring. In 2004 he appeared in 10 games for the Purple Knights, starting 8 games and compiling a 3-4 record. Dan's younger brother Will is playing for Standard Auto in the West Side league this season.




Eric Blanchard-2000
Sophomore Eric Blanchard had a great season Western New England College, which finished the season ranked 5th in DIII in New England. The up and coming DIII power posted a 31-8 record and a second place finish in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) in 2005, its second consecutive 30 win season. Blanchard was 5-0 in 12 appearances for the Golden Eagles, posting a 1.42 ERA in 38 innings of work. Last year WNEC finished the regular season with a 31-12 record and won the 2004 GNAC tournament. The Golden Eagles, ranked 7th in New England DIII at the end of the 2004 regular season, participated in the DIII NCAA Northeast Regional at Willimantic, CT, finishing 3d and ending the season with a 33-14 record. Despite suffering an early season injury, Blanchard had a solid freshman year, compiling a 1-1 record and a 0.77 ERA.




Ross Godin, Tim Simokonis and Dan Simokonis-2000
The Clark Cougars set a school record for wins in 2005 en route to reaching the semi-finals of the NEWMAC tournament thanks to solid contributions from three West Side alums, sophomores Ross Godin and Tim Simokonis and freshman Dan Simokonis. Godin was the team's slick-fielding second baseman, compiling a .971 fielding percentage despite fighting nagging injuries all season. Tim Simokonis earned a spot in the Cougars' starting rotation, compiling a 3-4 record in 8 starts for the Cougars. Dan Simokonis, Tim's younger brother, came out of the bullpen for the Cougars this spring in his inaugural season at Clark, posting a 2.57 ERA and a 2-1 record in 15 appearances.




Brian Abraham-2000
Sophomore Brian Abraham shared time at catcher and third base for the 2005 Crusaders team, starting 17 games and clubbing 2 home runs. In 2004 Abraham played in 15 games for the Crusaders, starting 9 games behind the plate. Brian's season included a home run and 5 RBI's for the young Crusader team, which finished 14-22 and narrowly missed out on the Patriot League playoffs.




Tom Shea-2000
Tom Shea, a sophomore at Worcester State College, was a key player during the first half of the season for the Lancers. The team's starting catcher, Shea compiled a .362 average thru its first 15 games. Last year Shea split his time between catcher and several infield positions for the Cougars, who finished the regular season ranked 5th in New England DIII and second in the competitive Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with a 25-12 record.




Josh Moore-2000
Redshirt freshman pitcher Josh Moore participated in his first official year with the UConn baseball team this spring. UConn is looking to rebound from a 26-29 2004 campaign in which it came in 9th place in the Big East conference with a 9-17 record. Josh will be pitching for the Holyoke Giants in the New England Collegiate Baseball League this summer. In 2004 Moore pitched in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, another wooden bat summer league for college players.




Sam Kaplan-2000
Sam Kaplan helped the Yale basketball team to a third place finish in the Ivy League this winter. The 6-7 sophomore started every game at forward for the Bulldogs, averaging 8 points and 4 rebounds a game.




Brad Greenberg-2001
Freshman Brad Greenberg compiled a 1.80 ERA in his inaugural season for the 2005 Oberlin College varsity baseball team. A lefty pitcher, Greenberg made 3 appearances for the Ohio-based college, which competes in the North Coast Athletic Conference.




Tim Lahey-1997
Tim Lahey Tim was selected in the 20th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft by the Minnesota Twins following the completion of his senior season at Princeton University last spring. Lahey was assigned to the Elizabethton, TN Twins of the Appalachian Rookie League. Lahey was co-captain of 2004 Princeton varsity baseball team, which successfully defended its Ivy League title with a sweep of Dartmouth College in the league championship series. The win earned the Tigers the right to participate in the 2004 NCAA Division I baseball tournament. As the team's starting catcher, Tim compiled a .504 slugging percentage and tied for the team lead in home runs. He was also second on the team in RBIs. His accomplishments during the 2004 season earned Tim a second team all-Ivy selection for the 2004 season. As a junior, Tim was named to the 2003 NCAA Auburn All-Regional Team after he went 4-for-8 in the NCAA regional and reached base five times. Tim also led the Ivy League in home runs during his junior season, finishing with 11 round-trippers, a .526 slugging percentage and a .994 fielding percentage.
