The West Springfield Spartans Hockey Team is still the only undefeated team (9-0) in the Eastern division of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League (NVSHL). By far the biggest stories of the night were the Spartans powerplay and overcoming adversity. The Spartans went 4 for 7 on their powerplays which helped defeat the fifth place Osbourn Eagles |

(5-3-1) in the Eastern Division of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League. The powerplay is now 9 for its last 12! However, the victory did not come without a cost. The Spartans roster, which was already short four players before the game, lost two more players to shoulder injuries early in the game. According to Asst. Coach Eric Hardman I told our team after the first that nothing more could possibly go wrong and that we just needed to settle down and play our game. The turning point came with 4:12 left in the second when David Sheinfeld scored from a very tough angle to tie it 2-2. Osbourn quickly grabbed back any momentum though when John Reid scored his second goal of the game to put Osbourn up 3-2. However, the lead was short lived as Tom Harrison scored two powerplay goals in a row in the third to put West Springfield in the lead 4-3. Finally, Senior Mike Strickland, continued his bid for NVSHLs All-Star team when he scored the Spartans Fifth goal and eventual game winner. |

What many fans will remember in this game though is the last 1 minute and 47 seconds. With the game fairly wrapped up, Bobby Surdam, received a big penalty which game Osbourn park a powerplay in which they pulled their goaltender. With 6 skaters on the ice to West Springfields 4, the Spartans nearly killed off the penalty until a shot by Trey Parrish bounced off goaltender Marc Dudzinski then off Spartans Defensemen Tom Harrison and into the net with 14 seconds to go. The Spartans then preceded to win the draw only to ice it and force a face-off in the Spartans zone. Luckily, the Spartans escaped with the victory. |

With the West Springfield Spartans clinching first place their First playoff game will be at Mount Vernon Ice Arena on February 19th @ 5 pm vs. the winner of the #5 Western Division team and the #4 Eastern Division team. |
