The Brief History of Wetmore Texas
Wetmore was on the International Great Northern Railroad eleven miles northeast of downtown San Antonio in Bexar County. It was founded in 1880 on the newly -built Houston and Great Northern Railroad and named for Jacob S. Wetmore, a director of the railroad. A post office opened in 1890, and by 1914 the settlement had a general store, a blacksmith, and a population of 25 people. The population was 50 in 1920. In 1940 Wetmore had 8 businesses, a church , a school, and a population of 150. As late as 1985 a population of 175 and 18 businesses were reported. With the growth of metropolitan San Antonio, the community gradually lost it's separate identity, and in 1992 it no longer appeared on maps.

Letter to the Editor:
In the 1970's the post office was downtown in what is now the BBQ place and at the time the "1990 post office" building was a feedstore next to the Feathercrest Egg Farm on Thousand Oaks. What ever happened to the 9 Pin bowling alley that was next to the BBQ place?

One of the first families to settle in the area were the Popes, who can still be found on the farmland by 1604 and Bulverde.  As a kid growing up in that area I was surprised at all the history that can be found within 5 miles of the old town. There was the Manson that stood behind the old train station museum. The indian tribes that lived out between Redland Rd and Thousand Oaks. And Commachee Hill a Range lookout station that was turned into a monistary (1604 & Nacogdoches) ... I found the history refreshing.. I rember the stories shared with me by David Pope on the long days we spent at the fire station we built. It was the first fire house in the area and was teh Rob Carrie Kennels back in the mid-70's.
If you were to wander around the Pope Property (which I wouldn't do because you would get shot) you would find the first grocery store that was in downtown San Antonio. David Popes was born in it and in the early 1900 it was to be torn down and he had it moved to his property to save it....

Thanks for the Memories ...

When I moved into a huge neighborhood in the north section of San Antonio, I realized that there used to be a small town there. There was an old abandoned Post Office, a small downtown General Store that was still standing. I decided to create a non-profit page that has the history and current points of interest of WETMORE
