SCENE I:
(RAINY NIGHT IN NYC. SHOT OF TALL, 1940's STYLE BUILDING. CUT TO INSIDE, A LONG HALLWAY LEADING UP TO A DOOR. THE DOOR OPENS AND WE GO THROUGH, PASSING A SECRETARY (PLAYED BY ELLEN). WE SEE THE FRONT OF ANOTHER DOOR. ON THE FROSTED GLASS ARE THE WORDS: "DETECTIVE WILL TRUMAN". WE ENTER WILL'S OFFICE. THERE IS A DESK, 2 CHAIRS, A LIGHT, CEILING FAN, FILING CABINET, BOOKSHELF, PLANT, AND A WINDOW WITH A VIEW OF DOWNTOWN. WILL IS DRESSED IN A BLUE SHIRT WITH SUSPENDERS AND BLACK PANTS. HIS DETECTIVE'S TRENCH COAT AND HAT ARE TOSSED CARELESSLY ONTO HIS CHAIR. HE IS LOOKING OUT OF THE WINDOW.)
WILL {VOICE-OVER}: "It was a rainy night in the Big Apple. The city was busy tonight, the clubs were full, the criminals were out....and yet here I was, a detective without a case to my name. Of course, I'd only started last week, but already I felt like I was in a slump."
{WILL SUAVELY LIGHTS A CIGARETTE, TAKES A PUFF, THEN STARTS COUGHING AND QUICKLY PUTS OUT THE CIGARETTE IN HIS ASH TRAY. HE MOVES OVER TO HIS CHAIR AND SITS DOWN}
WILL {VOICE-OVER}: "Then....she came into my life."
{WILL'S OFFICE DOOR OPENS SLOWLY, LIGHT FROM THE OTHER ROOM MAKES IT HARD TO TELL WHO IT IS. THEN TIME RESUMES ITS NORMAL SPEED AND WE SEE THAT IT'S ELLEN}
WILL {VOICE-OVER}: "Oh, wait, that part came a little later."
ELLEN {EXAGGERATED NEW YORK ACCENT}: "I got your paper, Det. Truman."
WILL (TAKING PAPER FROM HER}: "Thank you, Ellen, but call me Will. And for the third time, drop that stupid accent, you sound ridiculous."
ELLEN {NORMAL VOICE}: "Oh, right, sorry Will."
WILL {OPENING PAPER}: "It's alright, Ellen."
ELLEN: "It just helps me get into the feel of being a New York secretary, y'know, 'cause that's how they all talk..."
WILL: "Good-bye, Ellen."
{ELLEN LEAVES}
{WILL IS BUSY LOOKING AT THE PAPER}
WILL: "I can't believe this, hardly any crimes reported! This city is just too damn peaceful."
{WILL LOOKS AT THE PAPER SOME MORE. HE IS INTERRUPTED BY A KNOCK ON THE DOOR}
WILL {PUTTING DOWN THE PAPER}: "What is it, Ellen?"
ELLEN {LOOKING IN}: "There's woman here to see you, Will. She says she has an urgent case she needs you to solve."
WILL {EXCITEDLY}: "Well, send her in!"
{ELLEN NODS AND CLOSES THE DOOR. WILL QUICKLY PUTS ON HIS HAT AND COAT; AS HE DOES, WE HEAR HIS VOICE-OVER}: "After a week-long slump, I was finally going to get a case. Something to show the criminals and thieves of New York City that Det. Will Truman is here, so they'd better watch out....And that's when....she walked into my life."
{DOOR OPENS, SAME AS BEFORE, ONLY THIS TIME, GRACE IS STANDING ON THE OTHER SIDE. SHE IS WEARING A WHITE DRESS WITH A RED BELT AND A RED BOW ON THE FRONT. SHE IS ALSO WEARING A LARGE WHITE HAT WITH A RED FEATHER STICKING OUT OF IT, AND RED SHOES. SHE IS CLUTCHING A PURSE.}
WILL {VOICE-OVER}: "She was a timid thing, with little fashion sense and huge feet. But I took a liking to her. Maybe it was the way so looked so naive and innocent, unlike most people in this city. Or maybe it was just the fact that she was my first case. But I could tell we were going to get along just fine."
GRACE: "Are you Det. Will Truman?"
WILL: "That's me."
GRACE {FRIGHTENED}: "Detective, you've got to help {STOPS ACTING FRIGHTENED}---how much do you charge?"
WILL: "Three bucks per hour, plus transportation costs."
GRACE {FRIGHTENED}: "Detective, you've got to help me!"
WILL: "Okay, miss, just calm down. {INDICATES TO CHAIR OPPOSITE HIS DESK} Have a seat and tell me all that's troubling you."
{GRACE SITS}
WILL {SITTING ON HIS DESK, FACING GRACE}: "Now, slowly, tell me the story."
GRACE {ACTING NERVOUS}: "Well, Detective, it all started last night. My boyfriend, Ben, and I were at that club, "The Boys' Club", ever heard of it? {WILL NODS} Well, Ben, see, he's sort of in with the mob, right? Don't get me wrong, though, he's tryin' to get out. Well, one of the guys at the bar asks to speak with him. Something about finalizing some stuff. I figure it's no big thing, so I watch him go to the back room...and...and....{STARTS TO SOB HYSTERICALLY}...he didn't come back! And I don't know where he is! They wouldn't tell me anything and I haven't seen him since! He just....disappeared!"
{WILL HANDS GRACE A TISSUE AND WAITS FOR HER TO STOP CRYING. WHEN SHE'S CALM ENOUGH, THEY CONTINUE TALKING}
WILL: "Do you have any idea what might have happened to him? Are you sure he just didn't leave without you?"
GRACE: "My Ben would never do that! No, I think he was....was....murdered!"
(STARTS WAILING AGAIN. WILL GIVES HER A HUG AND GRACE BLOWS HER NOSE ON WILL'S SLEEVE)
WILL: "Don't worry Ms. Adler, Will Truman is here for you... Ellen!!"
(ELLEN ENTERS AND WILL SHOVES GRACE INTO HER ARMS)
WILL: "Be a doll and comfort Ms Adler would you, and call a taxi, Give me five I just need to check my hair (CHECKS HIS SLEEVE) and change my shirt."
(GRACE IS STILL CRYING AS ELLEN HUGS HER AND WILL GOES BACK OVER TO HIS DESK AND LOOKS INTO A COMPACT MIRROR WHILE COMBING HIS HAIR)
