Reviews on The Matrix
(from different magazines I read)

The Matrix uses Hong Kong style action sequences and state - of - the - art effects. The result is a relentlessly, shamelessly entertaining two hours which ultimately lacks the very human essence - a soul - which the story tells us is so important. Nevertheless, it sure kicks ass.
- Genevive Harrison (DreamWatch, issue 59) Rating 8 / 10.

The expert Fishburne is depended upon to expound the lion´s share of the script. Reeves is stunning, in his newcast slenderness, as Neo. There´s a major find in the irresistible Carrie - Anne Moss, a majestically wrought combination of steely no - shit intelligence and rock - chick vivaciousness as fellow tripper, Trinity. And Weaving, cast against type, neutralises his Aussie tones to a freaky deadpan.
From head to tail, the deliciously inventive Wachowskis (watch them skyrocket) have delivered the syntax for a new kind of movie: technically mindblowing, style merged perfectly with content and just so damn cool, the usher will have to drag you kicking and screaming back into reality. You can bet your bottom dollar George
(Lucas) never saw this phantom menace coming.
- Ian Nathan (Empire, issue 121, july 1999) Rating 5 / 5

Without doubt the most imaginative, stylish and exciting SF movie of the year.
Although the are some archetypal themes at heart of The Matrix, the film´s approach is truly unlike anything you´ve ever seen. The undeniable strength of the Wachowskis´ vision is beautifully complemented by the winning performances of its leading cast. It might sound ludicrous, but Reeves has never been better as the unwitting saviour of Humanity. Carrie - Anne Moss is captivating as his no - nonsense partner, Trinity, while Fishburne makes Morpheus a mesmerizing mentor. And Hugo Weaving is deliciously deadpan as the evil Man in Black on their trail.
Reality doesn´t come much better than The Matrix. And once you´ve entered, you´ll never want to leave. Unmissable.

- Starburst issue 256. Rating 9+ / 10

Just when you thought you´d seen it all, along come comic book connoisseurs Andy and Larry Wachowski, who single - handedly re - invent the blockbuster movie. Cleverly toying with the idea of reality, The Matrix, kick started Keanu´s career again and sets in motion a money - spinning franchise that has placed new faith in Warners. Without a doubt, the best SF movie of the year.

DVD review Exquisitely packaged in a gatefold sleeve, The Matrix is by far one of the finest releases on the format so far. The breathtaking animated menu boasts a cacophony of clips and stills, leading to a whole host of unmissable extras.
There are also biographies for the major players - plus a few scant words on the Wachowskis.
For those with DVD - roms, there´s more stuff still. A screenplay and storyboards options allows you to completion.
As Neo might say, "Whoa!"

- David Richardson (Ultimate DVD, issue 1) Rating 5 / 5
