Elizabeth Webber stood outside of her grandmother's house in Port Charles. It was the middle of the day, the sun was shining brightly in the sky. The hot rays of light bothered her, but it was bareable. She slid the sunglasses farther up her nose and inhaled the sweet air. She picked up her bag and knocked on the door. Her grandmother came and opened it, a huge smile on her face. Audrey Hardy was delighted to see her grand daughter, she hadn't seen her since her step son had left town nearly twenty five years ago. She let Elizabeth in, out of the bright glare of the sun, she knew how much sun bothered them. Elizabeth went inside, pleased that it was darker inside. She took off her glasses and surveyed the room, heavy drapes covered the large windows, and although it was the middle of the day, there was a small fire burning in the fireplace. Elizabeth set her suitcase down and wandered around the living room. She picked up pictures and studied them, trying to determine if they were like her, her senses weren't as acute as her parents but give it a few hundred years and she may have a fraction of their powers.
''Elizabeth, dear, how was your trip? Are your parents doing alright?''
She turned around and smiled. ''It was fine, grandmother. The plane trip was a little bumpy and long but it was worth it to see you again.'' Liz sat down and Audrey followed suit. ''It's been a long time.''
''Yes it has dear. But I'm glad that you decided to come here for a little while. I have been a bit lonely.'' She let out a short laugh, ''After several hundred years with your grandfather, it's hard to adjust to life alone. But he was tired of living and he had asked me to join him, but I was not done experiencing life just yet.'' Talking about Steve still hurt, she could never understand why he was tired of living. But it was never good to dwell on the past, ''You still haven't told me about Jeff and Helen.'' She said, attempting to change the subject.
''Well, mom and dad are doing just fine. They travel a lot, they don't like staying in one place for long.''
Audrey nodded, ''I can understand that.''
''And I, well, I'm doing okay. I just wanted to settle down for a while, get to know the place that I came from.''
''You're looking well, did they tell you . . .?''
Liz nodded, ''They told me that I could stop or start ageing whenever I wish. I figure twenty one was a good age to be for the next ten years.''
''I wish I had stayed twenty one but society has this thing about getting older, you know.''
''Yes, I know.'' Suddenly Liz felt drained and she couldn't wait to get to sleep. ''Gram, can I go to bed now? I promise to tell you everything later tonight. The sun is bit irratating, I think I'll just sleep through it. I guess I have to wait a hundred years to get used to the bright light.''
''Even after hundreds of years, the sun still bothers me too, but not as much as it bothers you, I imagine.'' She led Liz up to her room, it was facing west so the bright light of the morning wouldn't bother her as much.
Liz shook her head, ''Not only that, I haven't eaten since I was in Europe and I need as much strength as I can to go hunting tonight.''
''Of course dear, being a vampire does have it's drawbacks, doesn't it?''
~~~ Lucky Spencer sat in his parent's house. He was on vacation, an overdue one, if anyone asked him. Working for the WSB can be very draining. He wasn't just an ordianary agent, he was part of a secret group of agents that hunted and captured beings that were not normal. The Special Agent Force, they like to be called. One of the many branches of the World Secret Beaurau. The other beings were dangerous but they were careful, SAF hardly ever captered any of them, they were smart and fast. But SAF caught enough of them that they could find things out about them. The secret world, the different factions, different clans weaknesses, were all information that SAF had collected over the years. But to get this information they had to torture them and that proved quite difficult for they were strong willed creatures. The world does not know about them and it should stay that way. He was sworn to never reveal his job or identity to anyone. To his family, he worked at a government agency and they knew enough not to ask him any questions. Lucky sat back and put up his feet. After five years on the team, this was his first real vacation. The way he got the job was strange, they had came looking for him, not the other way around. He didn't know how they knew that he knew the other world existed, but they did and offered him a chance to get revenge.
What he meant by revenge was that when he was a little boy, not really older than ten, he was bitten by a vampire. The Spencers were in Europe at that time, in London to be exact. He was just exploring the block when he saw this girl, she was so pale and she looked helpless. Or so he thought. As soon as he got close to her, she attacked him. She was strong, to late he realized it. She had held him down as she bit his neck and took some of his blood. And as much as it had horrified him, it was an unusual sensation, almost a pleasant one, if he hadn't been so scared. She didn't take enough to kill him, just enough to satisfy her thirst. As soon as she was done, she was gone.
He touched his neck, there was a small scar from that incident. He never told his parents. They would think he was crazy. As soon as he agreed to work with them, there wasn't time to or a way to explain to his parents that he was leaving. He was gone the very next day. He hadn't really known what he was going to do with his life until the WSB solved that problem for him. He was twenty then, and he hasn't seen his family in a very long time.
Everyone has changed so much. He had showed up the other night on their doorstep and his father almost had a heart attack. His mother was just happy to see him and his little sister, he wasn't sure if she even remembered him. He had missed so much of her life, she was a teenager now, and looked at him indifferently.
His parents were currently asleep. It was late, around one. He was a late sleeper. The creatures that he hunted, they were nocturnal. Therefore he had to be as well. So is his sister it seemed. She still hasn't come home yet. His parents thought that she was sleeping in her bed, but after they retired, he saw her sneaking out. He didn't say anything. She wouldn't have listened to him anyways, the way she acted around him was odd. She was friendly but detached, like she was speaking with a stranger instead of her own brother.
Lucky rubbed his eyes and glanced at his watch. If she didn't come back in ten minutes, he would go out looking for her. He surveyed the room with interest. Not much has changed, the house was still the same, same furinture, same people, yet it was different somehow, not really his home anymore. His home was on some secret compound somewhere in the Nevada desert. Striding over to the fireplace, he scanned the pictures lining the mantle. One in particular caught his eye. He picked it up, it was a picture of all of them, Luke, Laura, him and his sister. It was taken right after Lulu was born. He was happy then, until . . . he gazed at the next picture, this one was one of him and Nikolas and Lulu. He and Nikolas fought for a long time until they learned to trust one other. Before he had left they have begun a tentative friendship. He looked at the picture and smiled, they were just kids fooling around then, and it saddened him to think that it was he that severed the connection between him and his family.
The sound of the door opening made him turn around. It had surprised him, and not much surprised him these days. He set the picture down and took a deep breath.
Lulu saw her brother, he was obviously waiting up for her, but why, she had no clue.
Lucky observed his sister, wondering if their parents knew she dressed like that. She wore her hair long. She kept it straight, with one lone clip, fastened to keep the strands from her face. Her attire was on the racy side. She wore a leather mini skirt and a halter top. It was warm outside, so she didn't bring a jacket. By the way he looked at her, she knew there was going to be a lecture. But she was not in the mood to hear it. She narrowed her brown eyes at him and started up the stairs.
''Wait.'' His voice was so commanding and authoritive, that she stopped, but she stayed where she was on the steps. Her back was turned, he couldn't see her face, which was the way she wanted it. She heard him move closer, and half expected him to grab her arm. ''Can I talk to you?'' She wanted to say no, but she was curious, what did her wayward brother want to say to her now, after all these years? Lulu turned and went to the chair. Lucky sat on the couch.
''Does mom and dad know you do this?''
Lulu snorted, ''What do you think?'' She leaned back in the chair and crossed her arms.
''Okay.'' Lucky really didn't know how to talk to her. They were so close when they were younger, he didn't know how to deal with this stranger in front of him. ''Where did you go?''
''Out.''
''Where you with other people?''
''Yes.''
''Were drugs involved?''
''No.'' Although she hesitated.
''Do you do this often?''
Lulu sat up, her body stiffening. ''What is this, an inquistion?'' She hissed. ''You don't control me, Lucky. You don't even know me.'' She stood and glared at him, ''This disscussion is closed.'' Pivoting, she tried to get to the stairs, but Lucky's arm shot out and grabbed her. ''Wait, I -- I'm worried about you, I just want you to be alright.''
She laughed, not the childish one that he was used to, but some other sound, although laugh wasn't the way to describe it, it was more of a cackle, as if what he said was ludicrous. She spun around to face him, her eyes flashing with anger, he let go and she moved closer to him. ''You have no right to worry about me, Lucky. That chance was gone a long time ago. It was gone the moment you stepped out that door and never came back. Do you know the pain you caused mom and dad? Do you? You think a letter will make it better, they don't have to worry about you, after all you wrote them to tell them you were going to be okay. It's all hunky dorey, but guess what, Lucky,'' She stressed his name as if it was poisonious. ''One letter in five years does not help! Do you notice how dad has gotten older? He's not the father that I remember, Lucky, he walks around like there was a piece of him missing. And mom, do you see her? Really see her? She was so beautiful, so happy, now look at her! Her wonderful hair has turned gray and she hardly smiles anymore. Do you know how hard it was for me? I tried to keep this family together but it didn't work, so I gave up. Let them wallow in their own misery but I'm going to live, I'm going to have fun.'' She gave him a wicked smile, ''Dad even used Nikolas as a replacement for you. Did you know that?'' She said that to hurt him and it did. Her words stung. ''Look at what's left of the all mighty Spencers! If you really open your eyes and see, you wouldn't want to be here either. And do you know who caused all this?'' She gave him a sly smile as her tone hardened, without waiting for him to answer, she went on, ''You got it, buster, it was all you.'' She poked him hard in the chest, ''I hope you enjoy your *vacation*. But before I go, I want you to know that I hate you. You took my parents from me and I could never ever forget or forgive that.'' She bounded up the stairs and slammed her door. Surely his parents must've heard, but the house remained quiet.
He picked up his coat and went outside. What Lulu said in there was true. It was he who had destroyed his family in his quest to find the one that had bitten him. He hung his head as he wandered through the city. It was late, hardly anyone was out, but there was some. Somehow he ended up in the park. He sank into the first bench he could find. He was tired, very tired. He just wanted everything to be back to the way they were.
~~~ Liz prowled the streets. This wasn't Paris, there weren't many people out this late, but she would take what she could find. She wasn't picky. Her parents had told her that being picky could lead to starvation. She wore black jeans and a black sweater. Pinned to her sweater was small red rose. Her shoulder length hair was pulled back in a pony tail. She hasn't been here before, which might prove to be a problem, but she had no fear. She could out run any mortal and could crumble a stone bench, if she so wished. But demonstrating such power would cause suspision and unwanted attention. Therefore she had to be careful. There were rumors floarting around that a band of government agents were hunting them, but Liz laughed at them. Paranoia did strange things to a vampire, it them careless and that could be fatal. With these thoughts, Liz carefully selected her next victum. A homeless man, was a good choice. She ended up in a park. She stayed close to the trees, her stomach growling. She was about to give up and try somewhere else when she spotted a young man sitting on a bench. He appeared lost in thought. That is good, she would take him by surprise. She circled him until she could see his face. He was handsome, with sandy blond hair and striking blue eyes. There was something about him though, that warned her to stay away, find someone else, but her system needed blood and he was the closest thing that she could find. Perhaps it was her eagerness to feed or the young man's good looks that caused her to be careless. She figured she could rush him and feed and be out of there in no time. But that proved to be more difficult. She jumped out from behind a tree and in a blink of an eye was on him. He was flat on his back, staring into the bluest eyes he have ever seen. This was one of them, he knew it. And he was sloppy, he should've known that he could be a prime target, but he thought PC was free of these demons, so he let his gaurd down. Big mistake. But he would not get bitten again. He would fight. He struggled and found that this one was very strong. But not strong enough to hold him down. He threw her off and jumped to his feet ready to attack. He has never fought one before without back up and equiptment, but he was resourcful. Her face changed as she grew angry. Her eyes narrowed and glowed like sapphires. Amazingly, she stood and laughed, not an unpleasant sound. She nodded as she knew that he knew what she was. Her face changed back to the innocent girl and again, he marveled at her beauty.
''You think you can challange me. Alright, human. I am in the mood to play games. Come and get me.''
He went after her with blinding kicks and punches but she blocked them all, with amazing ease. He backed off, panting. In all his training he has never encountered one like this before. He eyes went in search for a wooden stake, a branch, anything to hit her with.
''You had your turn, human. Now it is mine.'' She came for him in blink of an eye he was down. She was on top of him, pinning his arms down. ''I am hungry. Lie still. It will not hurt. Much.'' She lowered her head to his neck and bit into him again. She savoured the taste of the red liquid as it flowed in her mouth. When she was done, the cut instantly healed. It was a trick that her parents had taught her when she was older. That way, no one would ever know that she was there. He moaned as she got off him. He will be alright, they all are. He will not remember her, but somewhere in her heart she wished that he would. Against her better judgement she brushed her lips to his and was shocked when a tingle traveled down her spine. Interesting. But she did not remain to find out more. Draping his coat over his body, she was gone.
~~~ Upon entering the house, Liz discovered that she had lost the pin. ''Damn.'' It must have fallen off when she was battling the human. She thought about him and the the fearless way he tried to fight her. She knew he would never win, but she wanted to see what he could do. He must be trained in karate or some such disipline. It did not matter, she knew all of them. Her parents had wanted her and her sister, Srrah, to know everything so they could defend themselves. Although it was hardly necessary, they could out run and human, but they were insistnat. Sarah was older, but only by five years. They did not get along. Therefore different contients. Sarah had decided to go to Australia. She liked the accent. And Liz decided to go where her roots began. As she understood it, Gram and Gramps had moved from their house for several years and then return. It amazed her that no one had discovered them yet, but the grandparents were resourceful. They had to be to live three hundred years. She went upstairs and opened the window, letting in fresh air.
Try as she might she couldn't help wondering if that young man was alright. He had such striking eyes, it almost mirrored her own. And the kiss that she gave him, she didn't know why she did it, she had never kissed a mortal before and wasn't sure how it would feel like. She stared at the moon for a long time, she wasn't tired, after feeding, she felt like running. She wanted to keep fit, not lose her edge. But the thought of the blond male kept floating in her mind. ''What the heck.'' She lifted herself out the window and jumped to the ground. She hoped that no one saw her, but it was well past four and the nieghbourhood was dark.
She strained to listen and heard nothing. Her hearing wasn't as acute as her grandmother's, but it was better than any human's. She could hear a bird flap its wings a mile away, but that was in complete silence, if there was such a thing. With her ears, there was never any quiet, there was always noise. Sometimes she wondered what it would be like to be human, not to have to feed and hide from the day, be normal, if there was a normal. She shook those thoughts out of her head. It was rare that she would ever want to be anything but herself, it wasn't her nature to question the way things were. She retraced her steps back to the park and found the spot where she had battled him. He was gone, she felt strangely disappointed. She didn't know why she came back. He was just food, but his eyes . . . they stirred something inside her, something that she had never felt before, even with other vampire males who were equally as handsome, if not more. She searched for her pin but could not locate it. It did not matter that the park was dark and there was barely no light. Her eyes could see better in the dark than during the day. It was not here. She sat down on the bench that he had once sat. She didn't know how long she was there but the hint of the sunrise told her to leave. The morning sun was annoying but she could bare it, but if she could avoid it, she would. She hurried home, jogging in human speed as there were early morning runners out. Quickly getting into the house she went to her room to retire for the day. Tomorrow would bring another night, another feed.
