Lucky crawled out of bed. His body ached from last night's battle. He glanced at the clock next to his bed and groaned. It was past three in the afternoon. He went to his dresser and looked in the mirror. The vampire that he fought last night was gentle on him. There were barely any scratches on his face, he turned his head to see his neck. Nothing. Only the scar from long ago was visible. He frowned. It had happened, he knew it. Lucky picked up the rose pin that he found next to him in the park. It had poked his hand and he had cursed, but it was something of that mysterious creature. He was so sure that she would kill him and was surprised when he awoke. He studied the pin, it was a rose, just about to bloom, it's petals were made of some sort of metal. There were rubies on it, as there were emeralds on the stem. They looked real, but he was no expert. He tucked it away in a drawer, hoping that it would come in handy later. He went to the bathroom and took a quick shower. He noted the multiple bruises on his legs and arms. He had to call SAF and tell them that there was a vampire loose in Port Charles, but decided that it could wait. He wanted to meet this vampire again. He did not think for a second that he could overpower it, that would be foolish. But maybe he could outsmart it. He didn't want the SAF getting her. That would mean torture and strange as it might be, he didn't want anything bad happening to her. He stepped out of the shower and slipped on a robe. It seems like he had to wear a long sleeve shirt today. It might seem odd, but he how could he explain the bruises?
He went downstairs and found his parents had made something for him. He stuck the plate in the microwave and waited while it heated. There was a note on the fridge, telling him that they had gone out grocery shopping. He didn't know where Lulu was, probably out with her friends, afterall, it was in the middle of July. The microwave beeped and he took out the plate. He sat down and began to eat. He was almost finished when the heard the front door open. He cleaned up his mess and went into the living room. Perhaps it was parents, he should help them unload the car. The door was open and as he went to look outside, Lulu came bounding down the steps, if she saw him, he wouldn't know because she looked right past him and was out the door, slamming it behind her. He opened it again and saw her getting into a car full of kids. They peeled out of the driveway, leaving behind rubber marks on the pavement.
Lucky shook his head. He wished he could talk to his sister but what good would it do? She had said she hated him and he had no reason to doubt it. How did his life become such a mess? Maybe some fresh air will relax him. He grabbed the key that his parents gave him and locked the door behind him.
~~~ Liz cracked open an eye to glance at the clock next to her bed. It was almost five. With the thick curtains blocking the light, she wasn't sure how bright it was outside. She stood and stretched, quickly changing out of her clothes and into a pair of slacks and a halter top. She liked showing skin, it was one of her best features, but everything about a vampire was a best feature. They all were pale, with clear skin, hers was creamy white. They all had bright eyes, in various shades of blue and green. Never brown, unless it was made vampire, all born vampires had blue or green eyes. Her brown hair was silky soft, a strand of it was more or less stronger than a steel pipe. She liked it free, but for hunting, she perfered it pulled back. She went downstairs and found that her grandmother was out. She was probably working at the hospital. She smiled wickedly, all that free blood must be tempting.
It would be dust soon, and she would start her hunting. So wondered if she would meet up with that man again, his blood tasted extremely sweet. She opened the door and peered outside, the sun was still up, but it was not as bad as she had expected. Maybe she would start hunting now, her stomach was growling again. Slipping on a pair of sunglasses, she stepped outside.
~~~ Lucky didn't know why but he was back at the park again, in the same spot that the vampire had attacked him. This time though, he was a bit more prepared if he met up with her again. In his pocket he carried a wooden stake. From his training at SAF, he learned that a wooden stake through the heart could kill a vampire, but impale it any where else, they could easily pull it out and their wound would instantly heal, like there was nothing there in the first place. And they would be very, very angry. That was only way to kill them, nothing else works, a cross, a white rose, nothing. Once, he had seen someone try it, holding up a cross to ward of the evil, the vampire laughed so hard that the man relaxed, thinking he was just a crazy. That was fatal because as soon as the creature sensed that the man was no longer afraid of him, his face changed into something so grosteque that it made Lucky's stomach churn. The man did not die peacefully. He sat down and waited for the sun to set, he didn't know if she would come back or what he would do if she did. He had strange attraction towards her, almost a need to protect her. But that was crazy, his mission was to capture or destroy them. To deep in his thoughts that he didn't hear someone approach him, he was flat on his back before he knew what was happening.
''So we meet again.'' Liz said, a small smile on her lips.
~~~ Frisco Jones sat in his office in Nevada. He was the founder of SAF. Over fifteen years ago when he was in London and he had found this pale little girl. She looked lost and her chin was stained with blood. He went to her, wanting to help her, when she tried to bite him. He took her back to the lab because she was very strong, unusaul child, pale skin, thin, and very cold eyes. She scared him, but he wanted to help her. It had taken some time, several years in fact, but he had gotten her to trust him. What she had told him, frightened him. As he suspected, she was not human, she was a vampire. She was twenty something now. They weren't sure how old she was. She doesn't know the full extent of her powers since he found her when she was very young. She did not have the parental guidence but she did discover on her own the power that she possesses. She did not have a name when he found her so he named her, Issabelle. From then on, the special group of people known as SAF, began.
He stood suddenly, having a strong urge to go see her. He went to her room, which was deep in the earth. They had wanted to take special precausions with her. She was kept seperatly from the others. His superiors thought it best to isolate her. Her room was made of a special alloy that even she can not break. She was not a prisoner but she was not allowed to leave her room unattended. Although she was brought up with humans, she was being fed blood. They had advised against it at first, but Frisco saw what it was doing to her not to have the substance in her. Her breathing was labored, she grew weak and even more pale. Finally he convinced them to let her feed. They had slipped a glass of blood through the door and she had drunk it greedily. It was human blood, that was the only kind that ever satisfied her. And for that, she told them everything about herself that she knew. Her incredible strength, her acute hearing, her amazing sight, but sometimes he wondered if she held back.
He knocked on the door, from inside he heard a faint, ''Come in.'' He pushed the button that opened the door and stepped inside. He was not afraid that she would bite him. There were several times in the past that she could have done it, but she didn't. She was sitting on her bed, doing some sort of yoga exercise. She wore black leggings and a tshirt. She had long blonde hair and pale grey eyes. Her body was long and fit. She slowly opened her eyes. ''I heard you coming down the hall.'' Over time, she had deveolped the skill to notice the different breathing patterns of different people and the sound of their footsteps. What else was there to do but to refine her skills?
Frisco was handsome, with long blonde hair that he pulls back in a ponytail. His dark blue eyes sparkled when he laughed, a sound that she grew up listening to. Although he would never tell her, Issabelle knew that he was well past fifty. He was like a father to her, the only real parent that she could ever remember. She wasn't that bothered to be kept in a cage, just as long as she could be with Frisco.
''Would you like to take a walk with me?'' He asked.
''Yes.'' She jumped off the bed and went to hug him. He had told her of his family, of his ex-wife and his daughters. She believed that she must remind him of them and it brang her some comfort, as well as sadness. They went to the planetarium. This was where the scientists experimented on various cures, using plants from all over the world.
''Are you well?'' He asked.
''Yes. Thank you for the yoga tape. It helps pass the time.''
''I'm sorry that I have to keep you locked up, Issabelle. The others don't feel as comfortable as I do about you.''
''That's alright, Frisco. I really don't mind, I don't say this to be cruel, but I have never known freedom, so I don't have an urge to crave it.'' She was lying, she remembered freedoom, just as she remembered everything that had happened before she came here. Abandoned by her parents, she was left to fight the world alone. Until Frisco came, she had never known friendship. But he did not need to know that. It's best to keep a few things secret. ''How is Lucky?'' She remembered him as well, although he never knew it was her that had bitten him. Frisco knew, of course, that was how he knew that Lucky would join SAF.
''He's on vacation at the moment. Visiting his parents.'' He didn't mention that that was were his family lives, that they had moved on, he fully expected them too, but it still hurt to think of them. He had made his chioce as they have made theirs.
''Good.'' They had met, several times, but not long enough for Lucky to know that she was different. They might not have spent a lot of time together, but she knew how much he missed his family, the things he regretted doing. They never talked about her, though. To be honest with herself, she was grateful to him, and wanted Lucky to be happy because if she had never met him, she would never have known Frisco and he was everything to her, but she also knew it would be too difficult for them to be friends. He had some sort of pent up anger that frightened her and she wasn't scared of anything.
They passed people on the way, some smiled, some cringed at the sight of her. She did not mind, she was used to it. She wondered what it would be like if she was allowed in the world. Would she survive? Would they know she was different? She had no real hunting skills, only basic instinct. Who needed them if they fed her every night? She did not know of others like her, she has never met anyone else. Frisco did not discuss his job with her and she prefered it that way. They talked for a while, about nothing, about something, it did not matter, she enjoyed his company and that was all that she knew.
~~~ Lucky groaned, ''We have got to stop meeting like this.''
''Don't you like this? I thought human males like to be flat on their back with a woman on top of them.''
''The operative word is 'woman'. You, madam are no woman.''
Not offended, Liz nodded, ''That is true. I am not a woman, in human standards.'' She still had him pinned on the ground.
To anyone who saw them, they were just a couple having fun. Only Lucky knew the danger of the situation. He had to reach the wooden stake in his pocket. If only she wasn't so strong . . . and so sexy. He shook his head, where did that thought come from?
Liz smiled down at him, ''Do not worry, I am not hungry quite yet.'' She lied, she just didn't have the desire to bite him at the moment.
Lucky stopped struggling, it was futile, he knew, she was stronger than he was and it was wasting his strength to fight her. ''If you didn't come to feed on me, then why are you on top of me?'' Liz pondered that thought, ''I don't know.'' She moved her face closer to his, he could smell her perfume, it was sweet smelling, like roses. ''I suppose I wanted to do this.'' Her lips came crashing down on his and to his amazment, he responded. They made out for a couple of minutes before she lifted her head. She glanced at him in wonderment, she felt that tingle again and she liked it. The air seem to thicken around her. Something was wrong, off balance. She got off him. He was breathing heavily. She was a good kisser. He got up and looked at her in bewilderment, what was wrong with her? Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes were bright. He stepped closer to her and asked, ''Are you okay?''
She nodded, ''Yeah, I'm fine.'' She did not understand what had just happened. Had she willing kissed a human? And not even get any of his blood? What was wrong with her? She knew the consequences, she hoped that no one saw them. She had to get out of here. She turned and fled.
Lucky stood there in shock. He had just blinked and she was gone.
~~~ Liz ran all the way home, to anyone who saw her, she was just a blur. Closing the door behind her, she panted. It wasn't from the run, it was much deeper than that. It was something forbidden, she could feel it. But at the same time she was drawn to it, like a moth to a flame. Or a vampire to blood. The taste of his lips on hers wouldn't go away. She could smell his scent, feel the way his eyes were on her, full of concern. Liz was so confused, she had never felt like this before. She needed to talk to her grandmother. She could help her, she knew it. She could not smell or hear her grandmother close by. Damn it, she didn't know what to do. Sinking to the floor, she took several deep breaths, trying to calm down. She realized that she had not eaten. But she was not hungry now, even the thought of blood wouldn't calming her nerves. She did not know how much time had past until she heard her grandmother come in. Audrey was beside Liz in a moment. She could sense that something was wrong, and she did not need her vampire skills to know it.
''Are you alright, dear?''
''No, I'm not.''
''Tell me what's wrong.''
Liz took a deep breath. ''It's complicated, I don't know where to start.''
''From the beginning is always good.''
''Yesterday, I met someone.''
Audrey raised her eyebrows, ''So fast? Who is he?''
Licking her lips, Liz continued, ''He is human.''
''Ah.'' Audrey nodded, knowing this is what caused Liz's distress.
''It's wierd, gram. I don't even know who he is and I've already kissed him twice. I feel like I'm drawn to him.''
A look of surprise crossed Audrey's face, ''You kissed him?''
''Yes. I'm not sure what is happening.''
''You know that humans and vampires can never be together. It is law, Elizabeth.''
''Yes, I know. But why? I've always been told that humans were good for one thing, food. Yet, I can't help feeling a connection to them.'' She didn't say it out loud but they both knew that she meant him, a connection to him.
''I don't know, sweetie. I can't tell you what to do, but I think the best thing for you to do is to stay away from him. You know what the elders would do if they suspected . . .''
''I know.'' She smiled wryly, ''I would not live to see a hundred.'' It was a threat that her parents used on her and Sarah when they were younger. Liz had never met the elders, but she knew that they were the most powerful of them all. No one knew who they were, except for the guards, and they didn't even know what they truly looked liked. She hoped that she would never have to meet them.
''Stay away from him, Elizabeth, for your own safety. Stop this before it even has a chance to begin.''
Liz nodded, ''You're right, gram. I will stay away. I promise.''
''Good.'' Audrey tried to read her, trying to guess if she was lying, but Liz had developed some sort of shield that blocks her attempts. But she was not worried, Liz would do what was right.
